Expat The flats were known locally as the 'streets in the sky' due to the wide long corridors. It was a revelation when they were built. My Nan was one of the 1st tenants, and it was the first time she had an indoor loo! She would bring all her friends round and they would all cram into the toilet to ooh and arrgh. And I had my own room! I understand they are a Listed Building now.

I left Sheffield as a teen and came to London, been here 30+ years now,so have lost the 'o' and 'u' thing, and now speak like a true Norf Londoner! Grin

amberleaf When my block was demolished I was rehoused in a tiny, expensive housing association flat. I was already saving up and after just 8 months living there I bought a house with my now ex. I'm now back renting again. And so the circle turns. Grin

My block was just up the road from Park Hill but when I lived nearby PH was notorious for crime and drugs - no one wanted to live there. They're now listed and are currently being renovated, at massive cost. Should have just knocked them down and built new homes imo.

You have a very good point. If you're working 40hrs a week on the minimum wage then you'll be getting around £1,000pcm gross. Fair enough you won't be paying much tax or NI on that but you couldn't afford anything other than a small room in a shared house.
