just seen a trailer with the gorgeous Captain Jack and Gwen. No idea when it will be shown bit I'm so happyyyy. We really thought they'd killed it off with the last series.

Anyone know when it's coming??!!

Just before this series of torchwood started I heard JB on the radio saying that he'd seen that because it had gone over to America some fans were worried it would become too American. He said that was definently not the case and that it was staying true to its torchwood roots and all torchwood fans would recognise this Hmm

Yes the sex scenes are cringe worthy and the violence is over the top and just plain horrible for being horribles sake.

I will persevere with it because I have come this far and because there is sod all else on the tv but my god watching it is hard work.

Anyway my theory is that the three men that came to see jack when he was Hung up and made that weird holding on to each others wrists symbol (phicorp symbol?) Are the founders of phicorp who are using rat man because they know that jack will come for him.

Also I loved the doctor who refrence this week but WHERE ARE THE BLOODY ALIENS torchwood was set up to deal with aliens if they aren't doing that then its not bloody torchwood (this weeks alien doesn't count it was a past alien and we all know that they have fought aliens in the past because we've all bloody well seen them do it)

DawnTiggaFashionGoddess · 27/08/2011 06:53

I HATED the sex scenes, not because they were sex scenes or gay - any reason to see JB's arse tbh - but because they didn't sit in any kind of truth for Captain Jack's character. I could see him doing something like that looking for redemption after sacrificing his grandchild but not under normal circumstances. And the dialogue sucked.

Have you ever seen any American soaps, like 'The Bold and the Beautiful'. They seem to have given Torchwood an American Soap Makeover, and it sucks. Most of the acting is terrible.

And I loved Mekhi Phifer in ER, but its taking the shine off seeing him in this.

StringOrNothing · 27/08/2011 09:40

But gratuitous sex scenes and gratuitous nastiness are what Torchwood has always been about - its USP is that it is Not Suitable For Children. It's normally been pretty poorly executed, and if you're still watching after 3 1/2 series surely you'd be used to that; it's a bit like complaining about My Family's failure to engage with the realities of life in urban Britain.

Acekicker · 27/08/2011 10:16

I think he's putting a whole side of his career at risk. Perhaps he thinks that section of his 'fans' are unlikely to be watching stuff like Torchwood.

But unless I've got my TV stars mixed up JB has always had this side to him - whenever you see him on quiz shows/chat shows etc he is pretty outrageous. I think he's pulled it off pretty well - he has the whole almost Daniel O'Donnell or whoever it is thing going on with the cheesy ballads and the 'granny audience' and then he has the Torchwood/chat show/personality thing for a (probably very) different audience.

SquongebobSparepants · 27/08/2011 10:18

OH god. I don't post on this thread but have been lurking.

I am only still watching because I need to know what their point is. It started off brilliantly, deeply creepy, but now it's gone tres random, and the gay sex/aren't we cool/brave thing was just pointless.

I was in Cardiff yesterday and found the

We Want Torchwood Cardiff display with the explanation

I spent a few minutes reading through and there are a lot of snarky comments about Torchwood USA...

AitchTwoOh · 27/08/2011 10:27

it's true that the sex scenes have always been badly executed on TW (which is interesting as RTD was reputedly a monumental shagger in his day) but i'm not sure as to why we can't complain about it? that was the worst one yet in my opinion, Jack's seduction monologue was utterly cringeworthy (not aided by the fact that JB cannot act for toffee and because Ratso was badly cast) and made no sense in any case. Why was Ratso was all wide-eyed and 'ohmygosh' when he later revealed that he had in fact been footering with the finocchi back home.

AitchTwoOh · 27/08/2011 10:28

hahahaha that is brilliant, Spongebob!

SquongebobSparepants · 27/08/2011 10:32

Adds 'footering with the finocchi' to personal dictionary

It was brilliant, I was there with a friend and our dc's and I had no idea it was there, it is directly over the entrance in the show, on the public boardwalk. I had to stop to read it, loads of letters from all over Europe, and poems, pictures etc. all saying Ianto needs to come back.

And those sex scenes were awful even my GBFF says he cringed.

SquongebobSparepants · 27/08/2011 10:32

Goddamn you * and bolding

HarrietJones · 27/08/2011 12:52

doctor who to cheer us up!

HarrietJones · 27/08/2011 12:53

Tonight that was supposed to say!

RustyBear · 29/08/2011 18:14

What I want to know is, when Jack was telling ratty guy that he couldn't die, he said he was a 'fixed point' - but how did he know that in 1920-something - the Doctor didn't tell him till 'Utopia'

HarrietJones · 29/08/2011 18:47

1920-something could be after Utopia.

RustyBear · 29/08/2011 20:15

It's not totally imposssible, but after Utopia the Doctor took away the time-travelling function of the wrist strap thingy and Jack went back to the Hub, so I think we're meant to assume it was during the time Jack was waiting for the Doctor between The Parting of the Ways and Utopia - 1869 - 2006

HarrietJones · 29/08/2011 20:31

I just assume Jack gets round that at some point. Can't see him putting up with it!

HarrietJones · 29/08/2011 20:31

He used it to track the dr in the Donna/Dalek one too

RustyBear · 29/08/2011 21:17

He got a code from Martha for that, from the Project Indigo thing, but it was just teleport, not time travel.

AitchTwoOh · 29/08/2011 22:21

can i just say for the record that i WORSHIP you and your crammed dr who triv brain, Rusty?

OracleInaCoracle · 29/08/2011 22:26

Aitch, while I've got you... Ds and I watched dr who on saturday, and he loved it. Next weeks looks a bit scarier though. Is it 6yo friendly? (Assuming you've seen it)

OracleInaCoracle · 29/08/2011 22:26

AitchTwoOh · 29/08/2011 22:30

i would say not, tbh, but you can judge for yourself on iplayer. it has some really scary dolls in it, and a terrified kid of about 6 in it. my 5 year old is a total wimp, though, and freaks out upon hearing the theme tune of dr who, so i am not the best person.

OracleInaCoracle · 29/08/2011 22:44

Ah, thanks. It looks pretty scary, and I was wavering on it. It looks like I will be sitting through double total wipeout then!

teejwood · 31/08/2011 18:35

Been away but am back catching up with everything.

Worzsel sorry but RTD was not crap at Dr Who. He got it back on telly where many before had failed, with critically acclaimed writers, producers and actors (not all of them, fair enough, but quite a few you would have to agree?!) and made it cool, must watch, mainstream TV. More than that, EVENT TV. If that is being crap at executing a concept then there are LOTS of TV execs out there who would happily aim for crap. Some of the Specials misfired imho but RTD still left Dr Who in rude health for Moffat and the rest of the new team to take over. That is some legacy.

And in the same vein, while I am not a fan of this series of TW I don't necessarily think we can say RTD has "ruined" it. I had very high hopes given the premise and was willing to give the US co-production thing a chance rather than writing it off before it had aired. We don't know what has gone on behind the scenes, all we know is that the outcome has not been ideal - to say the least.

This is the same man who brought us TW CoE - which was one of the best, most thought-provoking and horrifying things on telly in recent years. And Espenson also is hardly an amateur. Something has gone wrong along the line - and I guess time (or the next update to The Writer's Tale) will tell what that was.

As for last week's ep - while the sex scenes did not strike the right note (nothing to do with them being gay scenes, just cackhanded/immature/unbelievable and Aitch you were SOOOOO right about ratty!!!) I think the butchery scene was well done, because it reminds us that Jack's immortality has led him into some truly awful predicaments and real suffering. I mean the guy was buried alive for 2000 years ffs. We do sometimes need to be reminded of the horror that can come with that privilege.

I will watch to the end, but with a note to the powers that be that they need to do better next time - or just drop the whole thing, now.
