Anyone watching Outcasts?

What did you think? It's all very Battlestar Galactica isn't it? And not just because of Lee Adama being in it. Stylistically almost an exact rip of the episodes set on New Caprica. Hmm, I think I'm going to enjoy it but we'll have to see if they take it in a different enough direction from here on out.

I'm a sucker for a spot of post-apocalypse drama but unfortunately, I'm an awful picker of holes in continuity and stuff (I blame it on the RL job) and there's just too much to pick holes in here. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy having my supper in front of last night's episode. But basically...I'd review it as follows:

  1. Too many actors that are far better known "elsewhere". I can't watch "Ros" without wondering where Harry is.
  1. How the feck could everyone be so very contemporarily well dressed/well equipped/have such amazing technology, 10 years into the occupation of a previously empty planet? There's no sign of any manufacturing industry, let alone the branch of IKEA necessary to supply all that so-very IKEA furniture.
  1. If you landed on Carpathia as a small child with no evidence of any parents, how do you maintain an Irish accent into adulthood?
  1. It's just a little too simple to replace one villain with the smirking George Osborne lookalike currently being shuttled down from the wreck of the mothership.
  1. The outcasts are going to be those kids who carry the halo virus. And boy, are they pissed off.

Still, it's all harmless fun. Not an adequate substitute for Silent Witness though.

HighPriestessBoo · 08/02/2011 20:52

or Spooks

Ryoko · 08/02/2011 20:57

I only watched half of it because the boy wanted food.

I thought the script and acting was awful it was like something for kids, I only started watching it because the adverts made me think it was some kind of Fallout rip off, I'm still not convinced it isn't.

I'm not watching it again.

notimetotidy · 08/02/2011 21:38

who is that actor who is playing the bad guy who arrived in the pod? He was definitely a lead character in something and I can't think what it is. I am completely lost and have no idea what is going on.

Steery · 08/02/2011 21:48

he was in ugly betty

notimetotidy · 08/02/2011 21:49

Thanks steery - he was Daniel.

verytellytubby · 08/02/2011 22:03

So Jamie Bamber only in for one episode?

GloriaSmut · 08/02/2011 22:59

Shuttle found. Plot, sadly, remains irretrievably lost.

Pollyanna · 09/02/2011 11:21

acting was terrible. I really hoped that Daniel Mays (cass?) would get killed off - he was the worst by far.

Pity that the first villain was killed off though, I quite liked him.

rocketleaf · 09/02/2011 22:12

Just watched last nights, still pretty poor. I think the problem is that its taking itself far too seriously. To much hammy over acting and anst. I'll keep watching tho, its not like there are loads of other demands on my viewing time, Hermione Norris is the best thing in it and the only one who is in any way convincing in her character (even though she has already been in two programs I have enjoyed, so i might be slightly biased)

Completely different but The Promise pissed all over it. Ch4 1 - BBC Nil.

I'm confusedGrin
Is it people on planet earth who are being saved? if so, how come they all appear to be British - and if it's just Britain thats at risk, why didn't they all just decamp to the middle of, erm the Gobi desert instead of travelling for 5 years to outer space?
Or did britain push ahead with the space proggramme and tell all of the rest of the world to F off and there was no room?

rocketleaf · 09/02/2011 22:39

It is because in the year 2030 the BBC will branch out into space travel, and they will only let on people who have an equity card british passport. :o Could be worse, they could all be American (although all the baddies would still be English)

Hermione Norris is playing the same character she always plays...

ACMDowding · 10/02/2011 13:07

UD - DH says that too, he say she only has one emotion - hardGrin

rocketleaf · 10/02/2011 13:15

Mmm spose so. She seemed a bit more upbeat (and less psycho) than Daisy or Lizzie Siddle for the first episode. Now her perfect world illusions have been shattered I suppose it'll be a return to type.

So now they have thrown a bit of Bladerunner in the mix. Any takers on which sci fi classic will be ripped from next week?

bondgirl77 · 10/02/2011 19:58

It really reminded me of Survivors, similar stereotypes etc. But as someone else said, am a sucker for post-apocalypse dramas and due to lack of anything else good on TV will keep watching this. Maybe Daniel from Ugly Betty is going to set up a new fashion magazine?? Also must say Ros's daughter has such an irritating voice.

floozietoozie · 10/02/2011 21:22

bondgirl me too.

Did anyone else think it was a bit lame the reasoning (or lack of) behind Ros (sorry, HN) and her daughter not being on the same ship. Cos if you're going to get sent off to colonise a new planet knowing the old one is dying or whatever then you're hardly going to leave your family behind, are you?

UnquietDad · 10/02/2011 22:00

I thought the girl playing the blonde girl (Aisling?) was very good. She was one of the most convincing actresses of the lot.

HighPriestessBoo · 15/02/2011 20:51

Is anyone else still watching this. I am still enjoying it, although the comparisons to BSG are inevitable v difficult to ignore when I loved it so much.

Katisha · 15/02/2011 20:54

I can't bear the smarmy religious baddie. Wish they'd get his plotline over and done with.
But no - they've gone and put him on the ruling council thingie.

rocketleaf · 15/02/2011 22:57

Yes still watching, although it's starting to get annoying now. There are just too many Hmm moments, hammy acting and predictability. An opportunity missed I feel. The basic concept is good but the whole thing just lacks legs, decent writing and originality.

I agree Katisha, I am afraid he's in it for the long haul which is annoying because he is totally unconvincing as both a baddie and a charismatic leader (having about as much charisma as a whelk, again poor mans Gaius Baltar)

boo I think thats my problem with it, it really suffers next to BSG which was extremely clever and this is just nowhere near. And so many of the concepts seem ripped straight from it (ACs = cylons, religion versus secular, suggesting humans originated on carpathia?)

I would really like for the kids the president is seeing to be something more than just him losing the plot. Maybe this halo effect is some sort of transcendation into a higher being or some bollocks like that.

Sorryboo! Still it beats most of the other crap on tv so I am sure I'll keep watching. :D

Don't apologize for your critical eye Rockette. It is like British BSG, more and more so.

Well I've managed to stick with it so far and I do think that it improved this week. It helps that I haven't seen HN in Spooks I think.

My only real issue is I can only remember three of the character names, President Tate, Cass and Lily!

UnquietDad · 16/02/2011 16:12

It's being shunted to a graveyard slot after episode 5. Episode 6 will be on Sunday 27th at 10.25pm. Ratings have been disastrous...
