What did you think? It's all very Battlestar Galactica isn't it? And not just because of Lee Adama being in it. Stylistically almost an exact rip of the episodes set on New Caprica. Hmm, I think I'm going to enjoy it but we'll have to see if they take it in a different enough direction from here on out.

I read that the ratings have been awful. They lost something like 1.5 million viewers after the first episode.

I hope it doesn't put the BBC off commissioning more ambitious drama Sad

Blackduck · 16/02/2011 16:20

It is pretty dire and clunky - a shame as there are some really good ideas in there being smothered by the crap actingand even crappy dialogue.

UnquietDad · 16/02/2011 16:25

Sadly, it will just be fuel to the fire of the stupid argument that people "don't like science fiction", and the BBC will not commission another futuristic drama for 15 years.

Katisha · 16/02/2011 16:54

I gather it's going to end on some tremendous cliff hanger, Spooks-style, which will be a bit pointless given that it doesn't sound like it will get a second series...

UnquietDad · 16/02/2011 17:19

Yes, they deliberately engineered the cliffhanger ending to give it more ammo for a 2nd series! Didn't work, sadly...

It'll be just writer Ben Richards and his mum left watching by the end.

Ben's mum: "I don't like these characters much, dear. And there's not much happening, is there? Pass me a Werther's. I'm going to see what's on ITV."

Ben: "No! Mum! Wait!... I mean...Look, just give it till the end. Really. It picks up. It does. Seriously. Please, I'll watch 'Songs of Praise' with you next week."

rocketleaf · 16/02/2011 17:25

:o at UD. Its all very disappointing especially when there was a fair bit of hype around it and the trailer looked pretty good.

The thing I find annoying, is that they are trying to weave all these little teasers in, hints about whats going on and whats going to happen but the bad acting and dialogue is so distracting I just can't summon up enough care. Its all going the way of Flash Forward.

Oh well, maybe the BBC should stick to Period Dramas, they at least seem to do those quite well.

RL - I agree - I have my own theory about Cass (anyone for a bit of mind control?), but, as you say, the acting is so dire its hard to care. The moment last night when she is going to break the LP (which, BTW, have you ever tried?) was just gobsmackingly bad. Bad Tipper, mummy is going to break your records

lucykate · 16/02/2011 21:03

watched half of the first episode on iplayer then switched it off. was dire.

medicalmayhem · 17/02/2011 20:10

Utter crap, really disappointing, the casting was all wrong, IMO and they had to literally spell the plot out as otherwise we wouldn't have a clue, as for the bloke running off with his son, seems like he only went 200 yards down the road! so much wrong with it, stick to documentaries BBC!

UnquietDad · 17/02/2011 20:22

I think the casting is not that bad. The plot is more of an issue. I agree, how did Jamie thingy's character ever expect to set up a new colony just the other side of the mountains?? With what resources??

JackieNo · 18/02/2011 08:08

Maybe there's a whole city out there (built by the people who were there before - as the jawbone shows) waiting to be discovered, and Jamie thingummy had discovered it, and that's where he was going to set up his new colony.

Ashbury · 18/02/2011 12:54

I've also stuck with it so far, but don't know if I'll bother for much longer. Too many things don't seem right or thought-out, and I'm getting irritated with minor points like;

  • Where are they geting all their nice clothes and furniture, fitted kitchens, and superior technology 10+ years after leaving earth?
  • Taking into account the above, how come Fort Haven looks like such a shanty town with easily-broken locks on doors?
  • Why isn't there any wildlife/ or domesticated animals brought from earth?
  • Why are all the humans stuck in Fort Haven, wouldn't it be normal to have started colonizing other areas by now?
  • Also have difficulty listening to Amy Mason's voice, seems to lack clarity (whatever accent she's doing), could just be my hearing though!
jonicomelately · 18/02/2011 12:59

Ashbury
They dealt with the animal thing in episode 1. Cass (?) had a piglet on the end of a lead. I kid you not Grin

Ashbury · 18/02/2011 13:39

Joni, I remember now - must have slipped my mind as I was geting so caught up in the practicalities of how they were getting their nice clothes and fitted kitchens!Smile

GeekLove · 19/02/2011 17:31

I have a horrible feeling about what Outcasts really is. It is actually BSG meets Eastenders.

Now whos up for a cuppa? We need to get this SORTED!

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 16:51

Right! I am not a bit cross.

I started watching this and thought it wasn't up too much. Then started to get a it more interested and just as it was beginning to get good (a bit Solarisy IMO) they bloody changed the scheduling. Tuesday night there was no outcast, instead some repetive guff about lawyers and the next episode is on 27th at 10.30 at night. And I don't know when the later ones are going to be shown.

Tsk!

GloriaSmut · 24/02/2011 12:21

I've given this series an admittedly critical chance to redeem itself. It hasn't.

There's far too much going on - too many strands woven in that clutter up an increasingly muddly story. In fact the whole series appears to have been made without the benefit of a script editor who might have directed the action into a better exploration of a smaller number of main themes. Although the whole production would have benefited by losing the woefully risible acting and characterisation that'd be more suitable for a pantomime. But right now, there's power struggles, currency meltdown, a menacing collection of cloned humans, radioactive seaside that isn't, hallucinogenic Golden Retrievers, unexplained fossilised remains, a nasty spot of weather and some sort of Gaia principle running. To add communication with a hostile, invading starship (from where, exactly?) is an entirely ludicrous plot development.

I'm not at all surprised it has been shifted to Sunday. Fortunately I shall be out.

EdgarAleNPie · 24/02/2011 12:38

aree orm it's getting a bit Lost. (and like Lost)

but still interesting, having endured the dire first episode i rather like it, and why do i now have to wait til sunday?

Ormirian · 24/02/2011 13:03

Ah well I love sci-fi so much more prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt than if it was another genre. Bad acting, dodgy plotlines notwithstanding. I just want to know what happens!

exactly edgar - I've gamely hung on for 2 3 weeks! How dare they do this to me. Don't I deserve some consideration?

Ormirian · 24/02/2011 13:07

You see, I don't care about the inconsistencies. Do you worry about why the heroine is such a middle-aged porker when you are watching La Traviata? Do you Hmm at the weird and wonderful and extremely unlikely loose-end tying up in Bleak House? No! You just roll with it because stories are stories and worth persisting with. And because it's set on a fictitious planet at an unknown point in time with a brand new society, there aren't many 'rules' - that's one of the joys of Sci-Fi. Eastenders has to be 'real', sci-fi doesn't.

EdgarAleNPie · 24/02/2011 13:12

and the other question the Beeb should consider is - what do they have better to put on monday and tuesday evenings? because all it meant on tuesay night fo rme, was i didn't watch The Beeb at all but was on mn

EdgarAleNPie · 24/02/2011 13:16

well that's it. i very much doubt they're going to explain half of what happens, especially if there is no second series.

but i still want to go along for the ride. even if i'll be sat there with DH saying 'but what about the??...' and 'well they are all odious so i don't care if they die...' and 'what happened to..?'

Ormirian · 24/02/2011 14:30

Exactly! The sofa hasn't seen so much of my backside for months! What with that haunted house thing on ITV on Thursday as well.

rocketleaf · 26/02/2011 10:17

I hope the V plus can cope with the rescheduling as I have been away this week so nor yet watched and I already have The Promise and BH on record Sunday nights.

I am like you Orm, cutting it much more slack just because I am a scifi fan. Pretty sure I would have ditched any other genre by now.

So it's tonight, at 10.25. I hope I don't forget and just go to bed!
