Anyone else going to watch this?

OP posts:
prettybird · 10/10/2010 22:42

It is filmed in the Southside of Glasgow in Pollokshields, the original palnned garden suburb in the world [proud]:). They have not even changed the treet names!

Mimile · 10/10/2010 22:44

Mollie, I thought Robin was the wife's sister's husband?
Otherwise, I told DH "bet they live in bloody Pollock' with a nice house like that" :)

Urbanvoltaire · 10/10/2010 22:45

It's filmed in the West End of Glasgow - I recognized some of the roads and of course the squinty bridge. PRettybird might know more details.....

This makes a change to my Taggart location spotting :)

Mimile · 10/10/2010 22:46

Expat - a lot of my mate on single "medium" income leave in lovely houses in the Southside...

changeforthebetter · 10/10/2010 22:46

Blimey! I liked it! Smile. I think raw grief messes with peoples' heads so the kiss wasn't implausible. The house is gorgeous. Have set the box to record the rest of them

expatinscotland · 10/10/2010 22:46

K, maybe in Pollock I can see it. :o

Wasn't some poor boy murdered in the park through there the other day?

Urbanvoltaire · 10/10/2010 22:47

oops thought it was west end, I stand corrected.

spiderbabymum · 10/10/2010 22:48

I really liked it .

David Tennant is lovely . Saw him in hamlet ................Very sexy for a skinny bloke .

I think its remarkably realistic .....just that raw emotion .

And The Wife ... she was beautiful and wonderful I thought .

expatinscotland · 10/10/2010 22:50

DT is the dry boak. He's the type of chap you pull in a pub when you're absolutely slaughtered, then you wake up in his at one point when it's hopefully still dark and think, 'Fuck. I need to get out of here quick!'

prettybird · 10/10/2010 22:50

There were bits that were filmed in the West End and the centre of Glasgow(like where she was cycling) but I can guarantee that the majority of the stuff around and in the house was filmed just along the road. :)

I liked the bit where you say him on his motorbike going home, first along over the squinty bridge and then across the Kingston Bridge Confused

.... for those of you who don't know Glasgow, that means that he crossed the Clyde twice twice in the same direction.Hmm

prettybird · 10/10/2010 22:53

It was Pollokshields rather than Pollok (there is a difference Wink).

I saw the scarves outside Pollok Park (which is more in Pollok) today for the murdered boy on the way back from Homebase :(

expatinscotland · 10/10/2010 22:57

I only know Glasgow as in a place to shop. Out here in deep teuch, Glasgow's where there's an ASDA, shopping centres with real shops in them and indoors as well!, museums, and cinemas with more than one screen.

Poor soul what was murdered. Sad

There was a murder through here earlier in the year, but the chap was a horrible drug dealer murdered by another drug dealer (from Glasgow) in a drink and drug-fuelled argument.

I daresay some weren't sorry to see him go out feet first.

The murderer was just shipped off to Greenock to await his trial at High Court in Glasgow.

prettybird · 10/10/2010 23:04

I don't know much about the case - haven't seen the local papers or watched the news over the weekend - only remembered when I saw all the scarves and flowers that a friend of dh had said that he had to to detour to get to us on Friday. Very :(

We also live closs to where Kris Donald was murdered in what was a racially motivated murder :( All credit to Kris' Mum that she stood up to the BNP when they tired to gain a foothold here and stated very clearly that that was not the sort of ommunity we lived in that what happened to her son was not indicative of the community.

expatinscotland · 10/10/2010 23:09

Oh, I remember Kris's murder. My god, that was awful. Why were they tried in Edinburgh, those murderers? I was working up there at the time, and the High Street in front of the High Court was thronged full of folks screaming abuse at those animals.

prettybird · 10/10/2010 23:16

Not sure why the trial was in Edinburgh - unless it was part of the agreement that Sarwar arranged with Pakistan to get the boys back from there.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/10/2010 08:08

I didn't think that the kiss was implausible but I disliked that it was so obvious. From the start the plot was set for us all to see. Friend wants children, her partner doesn't - handy protagonist with loads of kids.

I don't think that the wife was living her normal life - her moods were commented on by other people. I think it is clear that we are supposed to think that he is a put upon husband. I am happy to see drama where we see that people are not perfect but this is not what we saw of the DT character - he is kind and funny and patient - his wife is angry and short tempered and moody. This makes it easier for the programme makers to have him kiss someone else in the first episode and for us to not hate it.

It was all a bit drama by numbers for me.

noeyedear · 11/10/2010 09:03

I thought the first comment was right- that she was stressed about her exams, but wasn't always like that- otherwise she wouldn't keep saying 'i've been horible today'- her behaviour would be par for the course! I liked it, but then I'm a sucker for tall brown eyed blokes- skinny (DT) or not (DH). It did take me a while to work out who was who.

fartmeistergeneral · 11/10/2010 09:17

OK. I didn't think the wife was horrible, she had an exam the next day, was coping with 4 kids and was stressed that's all! I am more horrible than that to my kids/dh on a daily basis with no exam excuse!!

The kiss was awful and unpredictable.

Police would NEVER leave a distressed recently widowed man on the central reservation.

The reference to sixth form and year 11 set my teeth on edge (am in Scotland), such a basic mistake.

HATED that he said "I love you" in his photography studio the moment she died.

But, it was gentle drama for a Sunday night I guess. I liked the relationship with the daughter who isn't actually his. And I liked the behaviour of the kids, concerned with day to day things like which DVD to watch, even tho their mum had just died. Reminded me of an interview I saw with Gloria Hunniford after Caron Keating died, and she said the kids just kind of got on with their lives, playing on their trampoline etc.

I think Robin (Mr Statham in Green Wing) was DT's father in law wasn't he?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/10/2010 09:37

Yes - the police leaving him on the side of the road to get home on a bike by himself in the rain was atrocious! They would have taken him home surely?

I think Robin was the BIL - married to Anna the sister.

Fififi · 11/10/2010 09:43

mollieo - can't see that anyone has answered you yet...the bike crash at the start was exactly the same as the one repeated in the show...it was Rita the wife, so not sure where a blonde came in...should I watch my recording again?

I thought it was quite ( almsot too) realistic. DH couldn't watch because it is probably the story of his worst fears (although he might have perked up at idea of kiss from Suranne Jones!)but I thought it was clever - Rita shown as harrassed and stressed and not a saint, Dave himself not a heroic figure, kids getting on with life...so that avoided over mawkishness. And I love DT so that helps.

Think we're all agreed about the callous policeman and the strident education officer but hey...

I shall be watching next week...

BohoHobo · 11/10/2010 09:59

Cannot bear DT, saw him in Secret Smile years ago and disliked him since!

I felt it was way too predictable but the teen girl broke my heart.

prettybird · 11/10/2010 10:37

I wonder if the reference to Y11 and 6th Form is becasue they are trying - despite all the evidence to the contrary (Scottish accents, scenes that are very obviously Glasgow) - to present this as an "anywhere" location, hence the "neutral" Hmm (English biased) references?

Dumbledoresgirl · 11/10/2010 10:44

Yeah, it was rubbish, but DT is still gorgeous. I really don't know why I am attracted to him as Expat is right, he is a weaselly looking man, but nonetheless, I love him. Dare I suggest he is a great actor? I have never watched him and not believed in what he does.

I love the fact that his wife was played by Laura Fraser who also played his love interest in Casanova. The 2 of them clearly have chemistry.

expatinscotland · 11/10/2010 10:47

Yes, the BBC couldn't possibly entertain the thought of having a drama involving Shock, an all-Scottish cast! Then they'd have to stick it all on BBCScotland.

Another reason I won't be watching any more.

So sick of their biases.

I'm surprised they didn't put subtitles on them.

It's like how the guy who plays Merlin has to put on a fake English accent, but the gal who plays Gwenevere is black. Then why can't Merlin use his normal accent (Northern Irish)?

expatinscotland · 11/10/2010 10:48

I'd have had more respect for DT if he'd have done what his Dr. Who predecessor did when the BBC wanted him to alter his Manchurian accent: tell them to shove it.
