OP posts:
agedknees · 29/09/2010 17:54

Aitch - that is really mean!!!

SleepingLion · 29/09/2010 20:59

I loved it. But I did spend a couple of minutes thinking 'Ooh, isn't Liam's hair shiny?' Grin

I felt SO sorry for Bates.

Sassybeast · 29/09/2010 21:04

Loved it but spent the whole time wondering who 'Liam' was and what I'd seen him in before Blush

pluperfect · 02/10/2010 17:19

Didn't Julian Fellowes write an upstairs/downstairs gay relationship in Gosford Park (son of the house and the male servant, and when SotH died, the poor male servant "couldn't even express his grief").

So some familiar tropes, but that's probably what we want on a Sunday night!

As for the Titanic, as GeorginaWorsley, said, it's a moment pregnant withdramatic potential (like the railways coming to Candleford/Lark Rise), and of course they couldn't not mention the Titanic, as it seems to have been an international psychic shock, a bit like September 11 for our age.

I also thought the lack of bodies of the heirs was suggestive, but I bow to you, AttenboroughFan, in dveloping the drama a bit further!

pluperfect · 02/10/2010 17:21

Pardon the typos. I'm indulging in another cold-weather-comfort activity, and eating hot salted popcorn, and my fingers are sliding a bit on the keys!

thegirlwiththemouseyhair · 03/10/2010 18:01

Just watched it as didn't want to get behind before tonight's ep.

Not as good as it could have been, I think.
Bit too much soundtrack music.
I really want to like it Hmm

The thing that bothered me was that Lord and Lady G shared a bed.
Surely they'd have had their own rooms and in a house that size?
I'd want a whole wing to myself Grin

SixtyFootDoll · 03/10/2010 18:10

WASnt expecting that at 6.10pm on a Sunday.
Ds1 was Shock

pluperfect · 03/10/2010 19:30

eh? I thought it was at 9pm, after the watershed! Are you talking about the gay kiss?

KeithTalent · 03/10/2010 21:05

.

slobberedupon · 03/10/2010 21:12

Hehe... I love 'and what is a weekend?'

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2010 22:09

Fantastic!
Was glad to see the old girl get her comeuppance!
Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton are fantastic.

braveandcrazy · 03/10/2010 22:10

Did they show the gay kiss Sunday afternoon? I did wonder when I saw it was bring repeated.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 03/10/2010 22:23

Damn! I watched most of it but went to the loo during the scene with the dodgy geezer from Carson's past (?). When I came back in His Lordship was giving him money. Can anyone tell me who he was and what was going on? Please?

SixtyFootDoll · 03/10/2010 22:25

YEs they showed it I only had it on in the back ground DS aged 10 said' errrr Mum..'

I was a bit Shock

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2010 22:25

Carson had been on the stagein musical halls with the man,who was later blackmailing him.
Hugh Bonneville dealt with him though Smile
I want to marry Hugh Bonneville.

slobberedupon · 03/10/2010 22:27

He was Carson's old sidekick from his dancehall days and was trying to blackmail him (telling everyone that he just to be on the stage). Carson had stolen food to feed him but refused to give him money. He tried to resign (on account of the stealing) but The Lordship refused.

Am looking forward to next week - looks like it just gets better and better!

Braveandcrazy - I'm presuming from SixtyFootDoll's post that they did show the gay kiss during the afternoon showing.

slobberedupon · 03/10/2010 22:28

GeorginaWorsley, you can't marry Hugh - he's mine Wink

slobberedupon · 03/10/2010 22:28

Opps, meant 'His Lordship'...

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 03/10/2010 22:35

Carson? In the music hall?

Thanks slobberedupon and georgina Smile

Actually, neither of you can marry Hugh Bonneville, because he is already married to my friend Angela. Well, they are so alike that I'm convinced Angela's husband (who calls himself "David" Hmm) is he. Never seen them in the same room together.

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2010 22:38

We'll have a duel, slobbered Wink
Actually,I like Bates too,but am much more of an upstairs person, ifyswim.

slobberedupon · 03/10/2010 22:54

Georgina - duel or could we engineer an understanding, as of the times, such as between a wife and a mistress? Although that would mean that we would have to decide which of us would get to wear the ring!

I like Bates but Hugh is definitely more my cuppa.

TMWOSQ, your friend Angela is a very lucky lady, does this 'David' have as much charm as Hugh?

pluperfect · 04/10/2010 15:01

I wonder whether Bates's secret is that he shot himself in the foot to get out of military service.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 04/10/2010 16:27

slobberedupon He has bucketloads.
Funnily enough, I have just looked Hugh up on Wiki and found that he lives in West Sussex, which is also (coincidentally? I don't think so) where 'David' lives Shock
Conclusive evidence I'd say

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 13:21

The last period drama I had a weekly appointment with was Brideshead Revisited which was eleventy nine years ago.

I am glued already.

diddl · 06/10/2010 15:58

Finally got around to watching the first two eps.

Enjoyed it but it hasn´t left me champing at the bit for the next eps.

All a bit predictable I guess.

Like Dan Stevens though-I´d marry him without him being heir to Downton!
