Mary would have deserved the Duke...

Aitch · 26/09/2010 22:29

see, northernlurker? his consciousness was raised by WAR.

second ep much better than first, kid ye not.

squeaver · 26/09/2010 22:29

I love Lady Mary.

And am very much looking forward to hot boy-on-boy with First Footman Liam off of Corrie.

marge2 · 26/09/2010 22:31

Ooooh missed it tonight - Clashed with Gently - DH wanted that! Will watch on iTV player or whatever the hell it's called, in the morning.

turnitup · 26/09/2010 22:43

Of course - got it, thanks.

Ooh it was good though, can't wait for next week. What a fab cast.

Enjoyed this, I recognised Liam off off Corrie by his accent first. Looking forward to next week. DD and I have already decided that in polite company we will say 'please hold your tongue' rather than 'shut the fuck up' that I want to shout out but never do. Grin

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 26/09/2010 23:10

It was bugging me who the Duke was - and then I remembered that he was the hero in Stardust - not so heroic in this one!

Would he really have been directly addressed as "Duke"?

GeorginaWorsley · 26/09/2010 23:46

I loved it.
i am a slave to Edwardian drama, hence my name Wink

Northernlurker · 26/09/2010 23:57

No he wouldn't have been called Duke - I know she's American but she would have called him 'Your Grace' I think. Nobodu ever calls a Duke, 'DUKE.'
I can't think what Julian Fellowes was thinking when he wrote that bit tbh - she did it at least three times!

I thought he'd got his periods a bit confused tbh. Some of the time we were all 18th century - then mid 19th century - then charging on to the 20th century - very mixed tone.

Shame about the Titanic - totally unecessary to use that imo. A nasty bug could have carried off both heir and spare without all the drama of the blithering Titanic. Oh and there's no way that Lady Grantham and the Dowager wouldn't have attended the memorial service. The milk train - Bates came from London right? The milk train would go from the provinces taking Milk to London not the other way round.

Obviously I'll be tuning in obsessively! Grin

CwtchyBlueMama · 27/09/2010 07:51

I dont normally watch period dramas but Liam from Corrie persuaded me to watch this one & it was bloody brilliant.

Was it just me who had a little cry when that horrible woman kicked Mr Bates over & he was crying in his room?

Cant wait for next week now, brilliant!

essenceofSES · 27/09/2010 07:59

Northernlurker - maybe Bates was on the milk train when it was travelling back from London to get the next lot of milk from the provinces??!

Can't wait for next Sunday!!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 27/09/2010 07:59

Very good, even if some of the lines were a bit hackneyed.

streakybacon · 27/09/2010 08:03

Are there any naughty bits in it? I quite fancy watching it with 11 year old ds but would rather be sure it's ok first.

Northernlurker · 27/09/2010 08:13

There was a gay kiss and some talk of sexual blackmail. Not 'naughty' as such but would have required explanation - as would the endless stuff about entailing the estate though!
Aitch said she's seen 1 and 2 - maybe she'll know what's coming up?

Tippychoocks · 27/09/2010 08:17

Right, I know i was ironing at the same time but I missed:

Bates being saved (thought he left?)
The gay kiss
Why the lady's maid is helping the footman
The end

Explain! Please?

And I agree with the "Duke" thing. If it was supposed to show her as a gauche American then it stretched a point a bit after she was supposed to have been married to Lord Wotisface for 25odd years. She'd have figured it out by then surely? Odd.

LIZS · 27/09/2010 08:34

I missed the last 20 minutes or so, so missed most of what tippychooks has ! Bates clearly had some hold over his master, going off to the club in London together. Found it a bit overexplained, re. the entail and what it meant for the family, lack of eligible men, social standing of women etc . Almost Jane Austen-eque, but a century later.

Tippychoocks · 27/09/2010 08:38

Lizs, maybe the kiss was Lord Wotsit and Bates? Or footman and Duke? Can't think who else unless we're getting into incest too.
Am proper hooked already, me Grin

streakybacon · 27/09/2010 08:38

Oh I think we can cope with that Grin.

Aitch - is there anything racy coming up that you know of?

Aitch · 27/09/2010 09:09

can't think, iykwim? i didn't watch it with a 'is this okay for an eleven year old' head on, so don't quote me, but there wasn't any nudity in ep two or anything like that. it should be fine, i reckon, but no being cross if it isn't. Grin

domesticsluttery · 27/09/2010 09:21

Bates being saved (thought he left?)

He got into the car to catch his train and then Lord Grantham ran after him and told him to get out of the car, go back inside and they would say no more about it.

The gay kiss

Footman and the Duke, they have some "history" which the footman was going to bribe him with in order to get a better job but the Duke had been into his room and stolen the letters which were the footman's proof. He threw the letters on teh fire, destroying the proof.

Why the lady's maid is helping the footman

Not sure TBH

The end

I can't remember sorry!

domesticsluttery · 27/09/2010 09:22

Oh yes, have just remembered the end. The new heir and his mother are having breakfast and he receives a letter telling him that his life is going to change, ie that he is the new heir.

1234ThumbWar · 27/09/2010 09:27

Can I just say as a fully paid up member of the 'only the bbc can do period drama' club that Downton Abbey was fan-bloody-tastic.

FreeButtonBee · 27/09/2010 09:39

Gay footman has to be lady's maid's illegitimate son, doesn't he? S'obvious.

Loved seeing Lady Jane again - she is fabaroony!

I really enjoyed; agreed that they didn't quite get the era perfect. A bit too much picking and choosing between different generations but I will defo be watching it all.

Tippychoocks · 27/09/2010 09:48

Yes I thought son - like Gosford Park!

Thanks for the explanation. I get why Mr Duke was in the footman's room (lucky guess for him out of a whole corridor!) now.

AttenboroughFan · 27/09/2010 09:58

My thinking is that the Titanic was used instead of some ghastly plague so that the heir can return in a shocking twist! Surely just as the 3rd cousin has won the viewer's hearts... Grin

Oooh, and Bates is there to protect Lord Grantham because he knows there's treachery afoot!

I loved it! Can't wait til next sunday!!!
