What did Mary do to Edith? I missed that part.

Crumpet
You gotta watch the re-run.

Bue · 08/11/2010 11:19

It was all so unresolved! I'm wondering if Julian Fellowes was pretty confident there would be another series - because otherwise it was a fairly crap ending.

crumpet, Edith knew that Anthony Strallan was going to propose at the garden party because he had told her he would ask her a question there and hoped she would say yes. Mary told Strallan at the party that Edith had been going on about a frightful bore who was going to ask her a question and that she had been mocking this man and wanted nothing to do with him. Of course he then thought that Edith didn't care for him and left without proposing. Those sisters really are a piece of work.

I think O'Brien might become more human in the next series after this whole miscarriage business. I'm not sure she is as awful as Thomas is, deep down.

If Anna and Bates and Sybil and the chauffeur (what's he called?) don't end up together, I will be despondent!

Still can't figure out how two years supposedly went by and nothing changed in that house. Daisy saying to William at the party, "Sorry I've been so mean to you recently". Hmm Eh? She's been like that for nearly two years!

Bue · 08/11/2010 11:19

Oh no, sorry if I spoiled the Edith/Mary part for anyone!

HarrietTheSpook · 08/11/2010 11:26

But this is after Mary finds out from Evelyn Napier that Edith is the one who got the story going about her and Pamouk in London - and why everyone believes it - and Edith calls Mary a slut and 'who cares I did it' when Mary confronts her about it...

Bue · 08/11/2010 11:28

I forgot about the slut bit! I was actually quite shocked at that.

diddl · 08/11/2010 11:31

I really hope that M&M don´t end up together-she really is nasty.

doings · 08/11/2010 11:40

Started lukewarm but by the end I was loving this series.

Link man at the end said they're back next year - can't wait.

Loved Hugh BVille - wanted to give him a big cuddle when he was crying in the library:)

bluebump · 08/11/2010 13:13

I loved this more and more as the weeks went on. Roll on the next series!

diddl · 08/11/2010 13:44

No, really didn´t like it.

Too many things seemed wrong to get the plot to fit.

The soap thing under the bath-a downright lie & she wasn´t sacked?

Why does everyone feel sorry for Mary?

She doesn´t move me at all-I think she deserves everything.

It´s Edith I feel sorry for.

HarrietTheSpook · 08/11/2010 14:15

Apparently you can't just go and have a look round in winter.

But those with spare time on their hands and the will to fight traffice on the M4 can visit the Christmas Fair.

Squitten · 08/11/2010 18:45

Very sad that it's over and looking forward to the next series! My Sundays won't be the same without Maggie Smith's cracking one-liners Smile

Glad that both Mary and Edith got what they deserved - horrible selfish cows. Also glad that someone finally thumped Thomas, just wish O'Brian had got hers too.

And they're keeping the Bates/Anna thing going on I see. Is it just me who cares more about that storyline than any of the toff stuff...? Grin

Bue · 08/11/2010 19:33

It's not just you, Anna and Bates is the best storyline of all Grin I'm emotionally invested in them to a worrying degree!

And I find Bates maddeningly attractive.

anyabanya · 09/11/2010 14:37

Also find Bates gorgeous. But Sir Anthony Strallan. [shiver with lust.] Anyway else feel tha under that boorish exterior lies a senstive romantic soul? I would have married him in a heartbeat, talking about farming or not!

jenk1 · 09/11/2010 16:39

aw i missed it,is it repeated does anyone know? Sad

Envy smallwhitecat if your DH looks like HB. :)

turnitup · 09/11/2010 21:41

I agree diddl, I felt sorry for Edith not Mary.

I hope Thomas doesnt get his hospital post during the war.

Agree with the comments about the time lapse, it was all a bit weird.

Cant wait for seires 2 tho

diddl · 10/11/2010 09:06

The reason I felt sorry for Edith was that no one seemed to have any expectations for her.

Then when she got on OK with that guy, Mary barged in even though she didn´t like him.

And yet Matthew still proposed to her?

What Edith did was awful-but she did tell the truth-the guy was found dead in Mary´s room afterall.

But Mary then made up lies.

Perhaps they´ll be old maids together!

HarrietTheSpook · 10/11/2010 10:23

vid has just arrived

Commentary!
Deleted scenes!
House in history!

We've driven our AP to the gym in the evenings - she thinks we are the most boring family in history with all the TV.

anonacfr · 10/11/2010 10:25

Is it weird that I ended up feeling sorry for O'Brien when she realised that Cora had wanted her to stay the whole time?
She's going to turn into a saint in the second series.

diddl · 10/11/2010 11:31

I think that´s why it was too far fetched for me.

Discussing replacing staff in front of them?

And why wasn´t O´Brien dismissed on the spot for lying about the soap?

And would a "Lady" have been getting out of the bath by herself-let alone a pregnant one?

diddl · 10/11/2010 11:35

I couldn´t have sympathy for O´Brien at all-anyone who would want to cause a pregnant woman to have an accident is an absolute bitch!

And saying to herself "this isn´t you at all"

It was exactly her-what had Bates done to her-nothing, but that didn´t stop her trying to get him sacked.

anonacfr · 10/11/2010 12:10

Re the soap. It seems that Cora was obviously (for whatever reason) very attached to O'Brien. I can see her actually blaming herself and telling everyone that O'Brien had warned her that there was some soap by the bathtub and it was her own fault for not looking properly.

Agree that O'Brien was a total witch but she looked so stricken when Lady Grantham told her about the ad I just felt sad for her.
