DD does not want to come on another caravan holiday next summer

Have been discussing family holidays over dinner today and my DD going on 15 said "if it's another caravan holiday to Mabel thorpe I'm not coming" she stated how much she hates it and I said well in that case you will have to stay with grandparents...she then said "I would be happy staying at home and just have a few friends over and I said no and tbh she was really rude and back chatting me while I said calmly what my reasons were. I think she should come on the holiday, however I don't want her spoiling it with moodiness if she doesn't want to be there so I will be asking grandparents to have her it would only be for the week. I'm not leaving a 15 year old home alone for a week. Has anyone else left a teenager with a relative/ grandparents while on holiday when they don't want to go?

Could she take a friend to stay in the tent annexe with her? At least they would be able to do teenagery things together.

Motheranddaughter · 13/12/2025 21:08

I would revisit the whole thing and try and find something that works for everyone

cannynotsay · 13/12/2025 21:08

Gosh I hated caravan holidays, does she end up having to help with the kids? So it’s not really a holiday for her? Maybe you could do something else, even abroad etc, Spain is fun!

so my answer will depend on the answer to your question - is it Mablethorpe she doesn't want to go to? Or does she not like the camping side of it?

I think it's a bit of both but she doesn't like Mablethorpe she thinks it's abit ropey which I agree the town pier bit is, we tend to go a lovely quiet beach everyday and it is peaceful but obviously she's outgrown it.

Yes go somewhere else and take a friend.

NoisyViewer · 13/12/2025 21:30

They don’t know they’re born sometimes, I don’t know the answer as I make mine come & they have done their best to spoil it .

She’s 15. Peaceful beaches are probably not her thing. Why not ask where she’d prefer to go and find a site near there? The younger ones can fit in with that I’m sure

blankcanvas3 · 13/12/2025 21:31

We have a static caravan in New Quay, Wales and when DS was 15 we said it was fine if he didn’t come. We only go for long weekends though, and he stayed with my parents whilst we were away. He’s 17 now and he comes occasionally, either bringing his girlfriend or a friend. He has his own room in there though, and his little sisters are his ‘full’ siblings so maybe the dynamics are a little different

Notmyreality · 13/12/2025 21:32

You could try listening to her and understanding her viewpoint.

TartanMammy · 13/12/2025 21:35

I can't think of anything much worse tbh. I'm with your daughter on this one. It doesn't sound like she's been rude or ungrateful.

But she's also 15 so she can't be left home alone. I would skip the caravan holiday this year and do a trip to Alton towers or Thorpe park or something instead that all the children can enjoy. We stopped caravan holidays when my eldest was age 10/11 as they do outgrow them. Ours were deluxe Haven vans too, not a tiny tourer.

My parents always used to go away in term time (shock horror! Never fined and we didn’t fail our exams! - well not at first…) and I used to stay with my grandparents yr 10 thru 12 due to mocks GCSEs and first year a levels.

year 13 I was allowed to stay at home as well into age 18 - had a massive party and the cops were called, And flunked one of my exams as I was too busy playing computer games. 🤣

still went on to uni and still even now im a terrible procrastinator

I don’t get why force these people to do what the don’t want to do!!! Xx

vanillalattes · 13/12/2025 21:39

Is there nowhere else you can go? I wouldn’t fancy staying in a caravan in Mablethorpe with three little kids either 😬

OhDear111 · 13/12/2025 21:39

She must be bored stiff! Is she mums little helper too? Doesn’t sound like much of a holiday. More of an expectation to go but no input.

peoplesuckpeoplesuck · 13/12/2025 21:43

Could she bring a friend?? Then they could do and do their own thing but still be with you

Whytodayofalldays · 13/12/2025 21:43

I would absolutely have refused to go when I was her age. And I did. But, at 15, I was left at home on my own. I managed perfectly fine, went to school, cooked, did my washing, went to my weekend job and looked after the dog. I was fine.

ExquisiteDecor · 13/12/2025 21:43

I don't blame her, I'd rather not go anywhere than stay in a caravan with young children and nothing to do except go to a beach every day, one day is enough for me. At 15 they are entitled to have their views taken into account when choosing holidays IMO.

Peaceful beach sounds lovely enough. But this is the uk what do you do when the weather is all British and overcast/inclement? Speaking of which camping in an awning in bad weather is hideous.

i was also a teen who’s parents took me on caravan holidays. Think 15 was peak this is awful rather be anywhere else age

Fgs get a life. No I won’t leave my 15yo home alone whilst the majority of my family want a holiday. I don’t know what indulgent crap you allow your kids to dictate but that ain’t be done in my house.

Changename12 · 13/12/2025 21:59

@NoisyViewer But this isn’t a holiday for all the family. This is a holiday for young children and parents that are only interested in keeping the young children happy. The OP has not taken the fact that her daughter is older and won’t be interested in the same things or into account. The OP, is just carrying on has she has done for years.

disappearingfish · 13/12/2025 22:03

Just pick a different holiday. You will only have her for another year or two and then she will be doing her own thing.

I can’t imagine the grandparents would be thrilled at having to babysit a sulky teenager for a week.

Probably because you're forcing them to do something they don't want to do.

I swear some parents just forget what it's like to be a teenager. Of course they're acting up, you're treating them like babies so they'll act like babies.

It’s fair not to leave them home alone but you can’t really drag them somewhere they don’t want to be and then blame them for being miserable while they’re there.

It’s a bit if a shit position to be in as a parent if you don’t have anyone to leave them with while they’re rest of you go but you can’t for people to be happy.

But maybe the OP likes the caravan holiday to Mablethorpe? Isn't it likely that she does, given that she's choosing it? The daughter can just stay home.
