cant sleep keep thinkin bout thursday. ds gettin his results n my stomach just turns over every time i think of it. i feel like if he dont get what he needs then i failed him as a mum.

hes such a quiet boy, keeps to himself, xbox n music, but hes had same help as the other kids so what if it werent enough?? i keep picturing him openin that envelope n its all fails 😢 what will happen then??

i been cryin in the bathroom tonight so the others dont see. just wanna protect him but i cant do this bit for him.

any other mums feel like this?? like u just wanna take it away from them.

I know it’s easier said than done but please try not to worry. There are options available to him even if he fails everything, which I doubt he will.

Try to stay calm - it does feel like the end of the world but it honestly isn’t. Whatever tomorrow brings it’s brilliant that you’ve sorted childcare and will have the day with your son and he will really appreciate that.

SpecialMilkMonitor · 20/08/2025 11:31

Must say, having had to anticipate a child / young adult’s full panoply of exam results just once, I can’t imagine how exhausting it would be to go through it multiple times …

stayathomer · 20/08/2025 11:36

Op if he fails you say ‘well at least you’re all done let’s go do … (crazy golf/ eat rubbish/ games night). Am in Ireland with my son’s leaving results Friday and everyone keeps asking me what he wants to do and I say ‘he’s figuring it out’ but I’m in the same boat as you. All I care is that he’s happy, he had a tough time for a while last year where he wasn’t his usual sunshiney self and when he got back to him being him I stopped caring. He will find something somewhere and he will be positive and will make someone’s day worthwhile. Best of luck x

This, get the results, sort out the next step, then spend a lovely day one on one doing whatever he fancies, as long as it's not xbox!

yes you’re right if he gets 4s and 5s then level 3 should be possible, i just don’t want to get my hopes up for him too much in case it goes the other way. he will definitely do sport though either way, that’s what he wants and i’ll make sure he gets on a course for it.

i know i should understand this better, i’m trying. i did ask the college when we applied and they explained but it’s just a lot to take in. i’ve got it written down now though so i don’t forget.

Excellent, good luck for tomorrow, you can do this. Don't be afraid to ask for help from school and the college.

Sallycinnamum · 20/08/2025 12:21

If he gets 4 and 5s he'll be able to do level 3. If not, its the lower levels and he'll resit his maths and English to get 4 and above.

DS has everything on an Excel spreadsheet so we're well prepared for tomorrow's enrolment. As others have advised go on the college website and write the requirements down.

LaundryOracle · 20/08/2025 12:46

It sounds like you have a good plan now- best of luck to him, OP.

Gcse grades:
9 - A**
8 - A*
7 - A
6 - B
5 - C +
4 - C
3 - D
2 - E
1 - F
U - ungraded

Entry requirements are different for post 16 provisions (6th forms, FE colleges etc...)

Some colleges do level 1 courses such as functional skills in English and Maths.

I think you need to try and spend results day with your son, and help him navigate his choices - because there are always choices.

There should be staff at the school available on results day to talk to you and your son.

Stop panicking, start supporting.

Good luck

I had no idea there was now an A**!

There isn't.
But there is a 9.

murasaki · 20/08/2025 15:12

Yes, it's just trying to show how good a 9 is, that's all. As in a 'better' A than a 7. For GCSEs, forget the alphabet, it's all on the numbers.

Only in England I think.
I may be wrong but I think Wales and NI still use letter grades.
No wonder parents get confused by it.

SpecialMilkMonitor · 21/08/2025 06:37

Good luck today, @ChangingChances89!

ChangingChances89 · 21/08/2025 07:58

it’s results day and his birthday 😬 feeling sick with nerves for him. he’s predicted mostly 4s with maybe a 5 in english but maths is the worry. he’s still asleep right now, trying to stay calm so i don’t make him anxious before we even get there.

whatever happens i’m going with him to pick them up and then straight to college if we need to. he wants sport and that’s what he’s getting one way or another. i’ve got my notes with me so i don’t forget what they said. just really hope he isn’t too disappointed if it’s not what he wanted.

Well done. They may ask him to start at level 2 with a 3 in maths (or they may not),

Lambtangine · 21/08/2025 11:51

Well done to him!

stayathomer · 21/08/2025 11:53

Congratulations and happy birthday to your son!!!!!! Hope you have a lovely day yourself op x

Needmorelego · 21/08/2025 12:01

@ChangingChances89 Congratulations and happy birthday to him !
He has done well.
The college will probably say he has to re do maths but he will hopefully be fine with his sports.
🙂

titchy · 21/08/2025 12:04

Brilliant - congratulations to him!

ChangingChances89 · 21/08/2025 12:29

thanks so much 💐 we’re just happy he’s passed most things tbh. if he has to start level 2 first then that’s fine he can build up, he’s keen on sport so i think he’ll stick at it. just glad it’s not as bad as i was fearing.
