Does your teenager have a Saturday job?

My dd is 18 and she’ll be going to university this year. When I was a teenager, my parents expected me to have a a Saturday job to pay for things that I wanted and I had once consistently from age 16 to when I graduated university. My dd, although very academic and predicted very good A level results, is not at all keen to get any kind of job, ever. I love her dearly but she is lazy. She doesn’t lift a finger around the house either to help me and I’m concerned that she might not cope very well in the real world.

This is probably my fault. But I’m wondering whether cultural norms have changed so that teenagers don’t have part time jobs anyway?

My daughter, now 23 never had a Saturday job but works full time since she left school at 18. Her dad funded her social life! My son is 17 and currently studying A Levels so I don't expect him to get a job, he needs to study - but I will when he finishes his exams this month.

My 14yo DD got her first 'proper' job about a month ago and so far I think it's a really positive thing for her. It's only 4 hours pot washing on a Saturday but it instils self-discipline and responsibility.

She has also been babysitting since she was 13.

I've always insisted my girls have a part-time job from the age of 16 when it becomes easier to get jobs but I'm pleased my 14yo has started younger.

I have a 14 yr old. During lockdown and the following year she got herself qualified in a niche area required at every top level match in a particular sport. There are less than 50 people in the county with this qualification and she is the youngest by more than 5 years. She works every weekend during the season (match fees range from £26 plus expenses to a straight £50 fee). She is aiming to work her way through Uni and will choose uni's based upon them having a top level team (she plays as well). Her friends are very jealous but she has worked hard and passed the assessments and theory tests required.
