DD has had large sums of money put into her account

MummyInTheNecropolis · 04/07/2020 17:50

I noticed she had been spending a lot recently, and when questioned she said it was money she had saved up. I was suspicious so opened her bank statement today and she has received £500 from someone I’ve never heard of, in 6 different payments all made in the same day. She claims this must have been paid to her by mistake and she lied because she knew she shouldn’t be spending it. I don’t believe her, but I can’t think why someone would be paying her this amount?

I am planning to phone the bank but I don’t think they’ll be able to tell me much. I wondered if anyone here might have any ideas? DD is 14.

Seriously op you need to go to the police and protect your daughter. Something isn't right.

BitOfFun · 04/07/2020 19:34

I'm sure you know what pace to go at with your own daughter, @MummyInTheNecropolis. I think there's more than a touch of sheer curiosity here from the posters demanding you drop everything else right this minute.

Someone1987 · 04/07/2020 19:34

I was groomed and cash was by hand. Can't imagine anyone behaving that way would put it into an account, when it can be traced from where it was from.

MushyPeasAreTheDevilsFood · 04/07/2020 19:34

Stay calm x

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 19:35

Good luck OP raising teenagers is so hard at times.

Diverseopinions · 04/07/2020 19:35

I agree with the poster above that talking to her first is going to give her time to realise you don't believe her excuse. I think it would be better to involve the police now before she leaves the house again.

Waitingforboristoletusfree · 04/07/2020 19:35

I’d call police ASAP. That should get her talking if she does know anyway

Emmmie · 04/07/2020 19:35

Good luck to you OP! Parenting a teenage daughter can be pretty difficult sometimes. Been there, done that and I feel for you.

Whatever this is, I hope it gets resolved quickly and easily. 🌷

Lsquiggles · 04/07/2020 19:37

OP your daughter is a minor and won't get in trouble, she's a victim and you need to take this seriously. Wake her up and get the truth, I also suspect cam work

ktp100 · 04/07/2020 19:37

Money laundering, county lines, grooming, offering her money to watch her online - could be something really serious.

The only thing I can think that's innocent is that the money is being paid into her account rather than another accidentally and if you knowingly spend money that's not yours, even if it's in your account, you can be in trouble.

I agree that you should tell her you're getting the Police in and see if it opens her up a bit. Either way, you really need to speak to the bank and the Police.

unmumsymumof2 · 04/07/2020 19:38

What about things like webcam work? Only fans etc? Not sure how either work to give you any more info but both things that can be done from a phone at home for money

fairlyplump · 04/07/2020 19:38

This has all the signs of county lines drug explotation. You need to find out where this has come from, its your responsibility as her mother. Go to the bank asap.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 04/07/2020 19:39

This sounds very worrying, If you don't get a straight answer from your daughter then you must involve the police.

Vgtasd · 04/07/2020 19:40

Drug dealers would not be paying you by bank transfer!

Maybe you will need to call the police but it’s probably not useful to do it first off or use it as a threat.
Good luck with the talk OP.

zingally · 04/07/2020 19:42

Unless she can give you a believable explanation of where the money came from, you need to call the police. This is a HUGE red flag.

Mnhealth202020 · 04/07/2020 19:42

Money laundering perhaps

MummyInTheNecropolis · 04/07/2020 19:43

She has been awake for a while now. We are talking. We’re starting to get somewhere.

when my DD opened a bank account at 12, the bank was fairly clear that it was her account and that they wouldn't be sharing any details with me.

Well, of course. It's in her name. But she's still barely out of childhood, so...

Where would a 12-year-old get money into her bank account anyway if not from parents/family....?
The statements come by post at home. A good financial education is to be transparent about it. Having chats about spending/saving etc.

Money is such a taboo in our world, to talk about it. It's crazy. You need to talk to your kids about money. the bank of mum and dad is not open for eternity.

ComDummings · 04/07/2020 19:44

@Vgtasd

Drug dealers would not be paying you by bank transfer!
Of course they would, money laundering
MamanSparkles · 04/07/2020 19:44

Another teacher (in a fairly senior pastoral role) saying this is making my hair stand on end. You are really under reacting OP, and you need to contact someone asap.
Tell DD you are going to have to go to the police and it would help if she opens up first. She is a victim and won't be in trouble.
Things springing to mind are camgirl, pictures (maybe in varying states of undress), county lines, or use of her account for money laundering.
Call police, or school safeguarding lead (who may have specific contacts at police for teen exploitation, we do). But if you can't get hold of them as it's a weekend, please don't wait until Monday, call the police.

BadAlice · 04/07/2020 19:45

How worrying for you OP. Like others my first thought were CSE and county lines (it’s all safeguarding training ever goes on about at the moment!) but hopefully there is a more reasonable explanation.

JingsMahBucket · 04/07/2020 19:45

@WineLife you can do that on Twitch, give people presents / gifts while watching them stream live.
