my dd is 14 and so desperate I think she will try it with a needle. I think it looks cheap and nasty and her dad will have an absolute cow. Help advice opinions please!

I think at least 16, preferably 18. They are prone to infections which can be very serious.

pointydog · 26/07/2007 14:32

If I had a 14 year old who was seriously goimng to pierce her own bellybutton, I'd let her get it done properly.

It can easily be covered up.

bundle · 26/07/2007 14:33

it is cheap and nasty, i really wanted a perm at this age and thank god i wasn't allowed.

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/07/2007 14:36

isn't belly button piercing a bit passe now ?

NorthernMusgrave · 26/07/2007 14:38

FGS, lay down the law! She's only 14. Would you let her get away with it? She's blackmailing you, "I'll do it with a needle if you don't let me get it done properly and then it will get infected and it will all be your fault!" Well let it get infected then. They can't pierce anyone under 16, it's against the law isn't it?

Sheherazadethegoat · 26/07/2007 14:40

she is so not going to do it herself with a needle!

TheMuppetMuggle · 26/07/2007 14:40

I had mine done when i was 16.
And agree with Pointydog if my 14yr old daughter was going to try herself i'd rather take her to a professional and get it done properly

NorthernMusgrave · 26/07/2007 14:41

She won't do it herself, don't be stupid. Why do you even fall for that old crap?

Nbg · 26/07/2007 14:41

If she decides to take herself along to a reputable place they wont do it.

TheMuppetMuggle · 26/07/2007 14:43

And she'd need authorisation from parent/guardian as she is under 18

LadyOfTheFlowers · 26/07/2007 14:43

i did it myself! lol
then took it out and had it done properly.

preferably when she doesnt have to sit all day at a desk with a waistband rubbing against/pressing on it as that made mine go bad.
i know have a lovely big scar.

StormInADcup · 26/07/2007 14:44

its 18 for me,TBH, similar risks to health as a tattoo so why should age be different? you should make decisions about surgical procedures when you are adult, or go with an adult if 16 or 17.

geekgirl · 26/07/2007 14:44

no, no, no! (and this is speaking as someone who stupidly rushed out to get it done within weeks of my 18th) - put your foot down.
There's no way she'll do it herself, honestly; she won't get far with the needle. The skin in that area is v. thick and tough and it is extremely painful, nothing like ear piercing or whatever.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 26/07/2007 14:46

forgot to say i felt light headed and promptly threw up afterwards!

geekgirl · 26/07/2007 14:46

well, she won't do it herself unless she's as 'ard as nails as LOTF

(I've also got a lovely big scar there now )

i think its horrible.....but if she must do it i would say 18 also.........my niece is 11 and is pestering her mother to get it done!!!!!!!!!!!!why cant she just be 11??????

chopchopbusybusy · 26/07/2007 14:50

Preferably never, but definitely not until at least 16. If you really think there is a possibility that she will try to do it herself do a google image search for infected piercings and show them to her which will hopefully put her right off.

NadineBaggott · 26/07/2007 15:07

they are horrible and leave a big hole

pointydog · 26/07/2007 15:12

theycan look pretty on a taut tummy

belgo · 26/07/2007 15:13

if I had a flat brown tummy with no stretch marks I'd be tempted to get one.

Oblomov · 26/07/2007 16:45

14 No way. I had mine done when I was at uni and it was much more painful than ears. I was shocked as to how painful it was. I took it out when I was pregnant and kind of regret that now. You can't even see mine now - no visible hole or scar or anything.
