OMG dd has pierced her lip!

Dd (13 ) has come home with a pierced lip! She did it herself!

She has been away with friends of the family since Thursday and told me she did it Wednesday night after I went to bed. (I left for work before she got up on thurs so I did not see it then)

I am flabbergasted, it appears clean, no obvious sign of infection and she swears she is following piercing cleaning rules, and researched thoroughly online before she did it with a nappy pin (yes a nappy pin from my sewing box that she 'sterilised' with flame and mouth wash!)

I'm in shock that she did this and hasn't caused herself harm.

Not sure why I'm posting or what advice I want, just some support maybe

Bloody hell! Won't she have to take it out for school?

Did you give her permission to have a lip piercing?

I'd be looking up how to remove it with out leaving any damage.

Ok I didn't do it myself but the shop did it with a gun and not a needle.
Your dd will need to remove it for school won't she?

I would be telling her to take it out, Wouldn't get away with it at school tomorrow.

School will give her grief tomorrow that's a given, but she has had hassle over her nose piercing in September that she deals with. (The nose piercing was done a a licensed piercing shop oat the beginning of the summer holidays with the proviso she wore a plastic 'invisible retainer' for school which she invariably 'lost')

School is the least of my worries she can face their consequences as they happen as she chose to do this. My worries are the possible health risks of sticking a pin through her lip!

If you are concerned about the health stuff she has to take it out. Will school send her home or call you, because that's going to affect your morning.

She did it HERSELF?

Well, she'll have to take it out. The potential for infection (considering she couldn't possibly have used sterile or appropriate tools) must be huge. Not only that, but since it wasn't done by a professional - bearing in mind that no professional would do a facial piercing on a 13 year old - the placement is probably all kinds of wrong as well.

Scarring will also be lessened the sooner it comes out.

Are you saying you don't have the authority over her to make her remove it? No judgement here, my DD is only four. But surely you aren't saying you're going to let her keep it?

As you've let her do her nose then you cant really argue with her for doing her lip.

Let her find out what happens when she goes to school tomorrow - its her problem.

Just be wary it may also damage her teeth and gums from rubbing or a tendency to play with it.

I pierced my own ear when I was 15 using a safety pin and ice cubes to numb it, I can't quite believe i did it now I'm old and sensible but despite doing no research and no sterilising what a fucking idiot I was I suffered no ill effects. Sounds like at your DD went about it in a fairly sensible, if underhand way and she'll probably be fine. I would give my child a severe bollocking for this though. ever the hypocrite

What is she planning next?

Loads of kids used to pierce their own ears, or somebody else's, back in the day. Never did us any harm.

ouchie! so long as she keeps it clean though, it should hopefully be fine.

If your going to let her keep it then take her to a piercer asap to make shore she has the right type of bar/ring in it. You don't want it to be the wrong size or worse react.

I did my ears with frozen chips to numb then stuck the stud straight through! Did my DMs the same way!

God she's brave. I did my nose and ears myself but nothing else.

what has she stuck through the hole. specific kinds of jewellery/backings are recommended fir different things. I hope it's all the right size

If she already has her nose pierced then you can't be that bothered surely? Leave her to it, if school have a problem with it let them deal with her.

Is it the bottom lip like this one? That's the only piercing DD has abandoned, because it was causing so many problems for her bottom teeth and gums. Luckily it hasn't left a mark, but then it was done properly, not with a nappy pin!

I wouldn't have let any of my friends near me with a needle.

It was the hairdressers or not at all for me. I was 12.
