Dd (13 ) has come home with a pierced lip! She did it herself!

She has been away with friends of the family since Thursday and told me she did it Wednesday night after I went to bed. (I left for work before she got up on thurs so I did not see it then)

I am flabbergasted, it appears clean, no obvious sign of infection and she swears she is following piercing cleaning rules, and researched thoroughly online before she did it with a nappy pin (yes a nappy pin from my sewing box that she 'sterilised' with flame and mouth wash!)

I'm in shock that she did this and hasn't caused herself harm.

Not sure why I'm posting or what advice I want, just some support maybe

Get her some Corsodyl mouthwash and make her use it twice a day for 2 weeks - that's what they recommended when I had my tongue pierced and it didn't get infected.

I did this myself at 13 and it was so badly infected it left a scar, I'd definitely have her remove it!

Up to you if you allow her to keep it or not, but without asking your permission is worrying and should get her a talking to. You're obviously a fairly "cool" relaxed mum as you let her keep her nose piercing, so why wouldnt she ask you about this? What else may she decide to do that is dangerous or life affecting, tatoos, pregnancy etc.

She is still a kid and doesnt know everything, you do need to impress on her that at the very least things like this should be discussed.

My little sister (18 now) began self-piercing at 12 and now has an entire face full of piercings. As manatee says, with her it was a form of self-harm. At the peak of them she had about 5 piercings in her lips alone. She now has her cheeks and bridge (top of the nose between the eyebrows) pierced but she at least got a professional to do those. She's got the world's mankiest stretched ear too. She has PDA so is a total law unto herself.

I don't think your DD is SH but if she does start gaining a lot of face metal it's something to monitor. My sis started after a family break up so it seems like a familiar situation. Probably can't get her to take it out but I would recommend contacting a local piercer who can change the jewellery for her whilst giving her a grilling on hygiene and the risk of blood poisoning. She's probably more likely to listen to a professional.
