Pet that is not an animal, bird or reptile?

FionaFlies · 19/04/2023 18:30

DD is buying a flat and the over lease stipulates no animals, birds or reptiles can be kept as pets.

We've always had cats and she was hoping for one there, but obviously at this stage of the purchase it's not a deal breaker.

What pet can she have that falls outside of those boundaries? Fish I suppose? Smile

I had a pet stick called Knobbly when I was a child. I loved him. He died when the local brat threw him into a building site 😭

Anothernamechange3 · 19/04/2023 19:24

Leaf insects are loads better than stick insects and don’t multiply as prolifically

JofraArchersFastestBall · 19/04/2023 19:36

An axolotl (although, of course amphibians are a type of animal)
Mine is lovely, and very interactive and sociable for an animal in a tank.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/04/2023 20:02

A fish, an axolotl and all the others are animals. They are all excluded. It doesn't matter what other animals are mentioned, the lease doesn't allow animals. Whoever wrote it is a idiot (housing person here) but they exclude animals. That means all of them.

Greenfairydust · 19/04/2023 20:21

Frankly who is going to check what pets your son has in his own flat?

Unless it is a dog (which could be potentially be a noise issue and would need to be walked so would be difficult to sneak past neighbours) no one is going to know if he keeps and indoor cat, has a fish tank or an iguana...

It is nobody's business what pets you have if they are not causing any nuisance to anyone in the building.

I had a cat for years in my flat and people even had dogs in our building. All our leases had some nonsense written about not keeping animals that could create a nuisance....

I refuse to have my life regulated in that nonsensical manner.

A pet ghost?

😂😂😂

PollyPeptide · 19/04/2023 20:25

A twig and pretend to yourself it's a stick insect. Alternatively, a stick insect and tell the landlord it's a twig.
Two solutions for the price of one. You're welcome.

Madcats · 19/04/2023 20:59

I am mostly clueless, but we have leased a flat in a complex from time to time (over the past 20 years).

I have noticed far more dog owners (previously forbidden) and commented about it. Apparently the rules changed recently.

This might be relevant:

Ormally · 19/04/2023 21:06

A marimo moss ball. They like company, so maybe 2.

Apparently cosseted as 'pets' by some in Japan, and passed down after many years. The fish and I have managed to disintegrate two so far.

MyAnacondaMight · 19/04/2023 21:10

I had a clause like that in a leasehold flat. Swiftly realised that the corporate freeholder was never going to come round to check, and the neighbours didn’t care. Upstairs even had a dog!

postwarbulge · 19/04/2023 21:10

That leaves a mollusc, an arthropod or a marsupial

Nope. They're all animals.

How can so many posters not know what an 'animal' is?

Just what I've been wondering.

I just about get it for the first couple of times it happened but people are still suggesting animals despite the numerous posts saying that snails, stick insects, spiders etc are still animals.

It is curious. I feel like banging on about species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, domain.

But I won't. I will let Wikipedia do that.
