Pet that is not an animal, bird or reptile?

FionaFlies · 19/04/2023 18:30

DD is buying a flat and the over lease stipulates no animals, birds or reptiles can be kept as pets.

We've always had cats and she was hoping for one there, but obviously at this stage of the purchase it's not a deal breaker.

What pet can she have that falls outside of those boundaries? Fish I suppose? Smile

We have a pet stone called Sharon

AutumnCrow · 21/04/2023 08:55

I really do have a hand-painted emotional support stone on my bedside table.

Leaf insects ? Very pretty and wave their legs at you. Bit of a pain to feed in winter. Get from eBay. Ours breed and we made a profit

not stick insects !

But leaf insects are still animals!

2reefsin30knots · 21/04/2023 18:09

It would be a deal breaker for me. I'd not buy a property that I couldn't have a pet in if I knew I wanted a pet. Rent, yes. Buy, no.

Would it not be better to buy somewhere she can have her cat one day?

It’s actually making me irrationally annoyed that people don’t know what an animal is. Insects yes, axolotls, yes, fish, yes. Gaaaahhhhhh.

yogacushions · 21/04/2023 20:33

But really WHO is going to check ?!? A few leaf insects are not going to break the lease !

They are going to break the lease because the lease says no animals.

Whether anyone would bother checking or would be petty enough to care is a different matter.

It’s almost funnier than the time someone on TES wished that primary teachers would stop teaching that humans were animals because she had to unteach it to yr7 every year.

Other than what have already been mentioned, all I can think of is a Sounds or a Clark.

Yeah like as long as it is a low maintenance silent pet- how is anyone going to know and who would they report it to?

shockthemonkey · 22/04/2023 13:05

All those suggested alternatives are still animals.

Except for the rock.

Even the phrase “animal, bird or reptile” is nonsense, as birds and reptiles are animals.

Boy oh boy

A pet ghost?

If you are not sure about the commitment ( ghost live a long time ! ) you could always rent-a-ghost 😁

cariadlet · 19/04/2023 18:46

Spiders, snails and stick insects are all animals.

Whoever drew up the lease needs to have a couple of primary school science lessons. The words bird and reptile are superfluous because they're animals.

Yes! And fish are animals too!

SisyphusDad · 23/08/2023 22:38

An oyster.

For those with long memories...

"I'm taking my oyster for walkies. She's really incredibly sweet. With barnacles on her, for her oyster bonnet, she's the queen of the oyster parade."

And yes, I know an oyster is an animal.

It's taken you four months to think that up?! Grin Did you bring it back from the Edinburgh Fringe? You should have entered it for best joke - it's better than the one that won.

ScottBakula · 24/08/2023 21:36

I didnt realise it was a oldish thread until after I posted .
I stand by my joke though 😃

How can so many posters not know what an 'animal' is?

I blame the National Curriculum 😂

That's not fair!

The key stage 1 science curriculum (5 - 7 year olds) includes knowing what an animal is.

Have a look at the proposal to allow renters to have pets

"Pets can bring a huge amount of joy to their owners. We are committed to supporting responsible pet ownership in the private rented sector. The Renters (Reform) Bill will ensure landlords do not unreasonably withhold consent when a tenant requests to have a pet in their home, with the tenant able to challenge unfair decisions.
We know that some landlords are concerned about potential damage caused by pets. That is why the Renters (Reform) Bill will allow landlords to require insurance covering pet damage. This will provide landlords with reassurance that any damage caused by a pet can be taken care of, and that the responsibility for preventing and resolving damage caused by a pet will fall to the tenant.
We will publish guidance for landlords and tenants before the new rules come into effect."

SweetPetrichor · 25/08/2023 10:07

I kept tarantulas…I just hid them in a locked cabinet during inspections. They couldn’t do damage, nobody was any the wiser, and I got the joy that pets bring. I am glad to own my own home now and not have to ask permission!

Perhaps the GCSE Science curriculum should re-visit the topic then, since so many people can't remember...

Maggiemaggieooo · 26/08/2023 02:16

Goodness me that's restrictive I rent and just come to the conclusion my tenancy says I need permission for pets and I have guinea pigs whoops good Job they don't check haha
