In reference to a question by ltec the other day.

OP posts:
reallygrumpy · 06/06/2010 20:39

ltec did you buy the shoes? They're fab! also, I'm feeling rubbish so I'm considering the carol vorderman detox, is it really tough and does it work? We've done loads of entertaining this weekend then lunch with my in-laws today and I feel rotten.
vin I'm so sorry about your friend.
Also, it was sad hearing about people's experiences at school, my school years weren't great, I went to a private school in Surrey where dieting was the main competitive sport for girls!

Whelk · 06/06/2010 20:46

Oh vin I am so terribly sorry to hear about your friend. As you know I have also just lost a friend to an eating disorder (what an utterly crappy coincidence) so I really understand the guilty feelings and the feeling that you could have done more to stop it ending so dreadfully. I have tortured myself with some of the glib things I said to her (line by line sometimes).

But my dh has been so helpful in helping me come to terms with this, pointing out that anorexia is an illness and when someone is in the grip of it, whatever you say or do can't really change it. I'm still working through this to be honest.

Blossoming The dress is lovely and I bet it looked great with your colouring (you are a winter aren't you!). Enjoy the compliments! You sound like you looked amazing!

On the subject of compliments, I have just (yesterday) had my hair cut short. Its a big change but I think I like it. Its kind of 60s ish like early Twiggy. At today's family party my MIL said 'oo you've had your hair cut!'.

Why do people say that? Why not 'your hair looks nice'. Not once, ever, ever has she told me I look nice (not even on my wedding day, when, damn it, I looked beautiful!)

And what are you supposed to reply?
(No need to actually answer this Im just having a rant)

monkeysmama · 06/06/2010 20:48

Hey girls

I couldn't find you for a while .

Friday at Nobu was good. Snake print was right choice of outfit. Lots of women who'd tried far too hard. Being tanned helped a lot though. We went to the Park Lane one which was nice but a bit cafe-esque (not what I expect for that kind of money. I prefer the one near Green Park.

Went to summer party in our local park today - wore blue tailored hareems, blue vest and silver glads. Felt quite good but again, with a tan everything looks better.

My mate was 30 today and met us in park looking suddenly tanned. Her colour was so good I spent a while wondering how she'd got so brown since Friday night. The secret is apparently a Loreal tanning gel. I don't usually use Loreal because of their Nestle connection but might have to borrow some of hers.

NotYummy have a brilliant holiday.

Has anyone seen any cheap but nice bandeau tops / short dresses / jumpsuits on their travels? I need a few more for wearing the house/running into garden when dd is occupied to catch the sun (assuming it's coming back and summer isn't over)

Interested in the navy pea coat idea Tracey. I have only started wearing navy this year but really like it. Keep us informed. On the subject of coats - how and when do you wear the Next one? I never wear mine because I have no idea what to team it with. Dark navy jeans are just too wintery and white jeans aren't an every day / park thing are they?

Off to catch up with other posts. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

PlumSykes · 06/06/2010 21:13

HI!

Have been MIA for too long. A combination of a v ill DS, DD's birthday party, houseguests and half-term contrived to keep me clear of S&B for a whole thread.

Have been pretty purchase-free, though did order these in all 3 colours yesterday. Good price, not to high, and can always send one pair back .

Anyway, have done a bit of a catch up, and have these things to report on:

TraceyB: The Birds! Oh God! I'd have to move.

LTEC: have tried those Ash sandals on in a bronzy leather. Divine.

Hells: Have decided to Durkan, on strength of you and Grazia piece I finally got around to reading today, 2 weeks late. The website says I need to do 2 days of no carbs, then 7 of every other day. Will start tomorrow-want to be TAF by Ascot, which is on 15th June.
Have cooked for salmon ready for lunch tomorrow, will roast a chicken tomorrow for supper, then have cold next day. Boiled eggs sans soldiers for breakfast and I'll be all set.

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 21:14

vin that is so awful, am so sorry to hear about your friend. You mustn't feel guilty; you must know from experience that the desire to be and get well is in you, not something that any one can give you. I know it's not the same but we have lost a few people from our life to suicide, including one quite recently, and I think the impulse to imagine that you could have done something / said something to make a difference is always quite strong. Am sure you were the best friend you could have been.

have not bought shoes yet ... aaaargh!! should I? do I really need another pair of shoes??

reallygrumpy the Carol Vorderman detox is without a doubt the best eating thing I have ever done, so much so that I never went back to eating the way I did before. I didn't find it tough but I have friends who did, I guess it depends on what your food weaknesses are? Lost a stone in 28 days (as has everyone else I know who's done it) felt amazing, clear skin, glowing, even dh ended up loving it. Best of all, no portion control (I am soooo greedy, would rather have massive bowl of veg than matchbox-sized piece of steak) and lots of carbs. Also very easy to do whilst still maintaining 'normal' life, entertaining etc (maybe a bit harder for eating out) Also fab fertility booster. Definitely recommend it!!

blossoming · 06/06/2010 21:16

Thanks for your lovely comments. It was good to have everyone together again for a happy occasion after the funeral in December.

vinauchocolat, you have had so many hard experiences in your life and so young. Well done you for being in recovery. What a terrible illness anorexia is.

OP posts:
monkeysmama · 06/06/2010 21:22

Vin really sorry to hear about your friend. Losing people is so damn sad.

Cakey like the shoes but I would!

Tracey the bird thing totally freaked me out when I saw it last night. I had just short of a decade of counselling for a serious bird phobia. It would be heart attack inducing in me. I so feel for you. As for the other story. Urrrgghhh. Really like the leather jacket btw.

Blossoming glad you had a good day.

Welcome Tethersend & Argh (spg?)

traceybath · 06/06/2010 21:32

MM - I haven't worn the next jacket since weather got warmer as tend to just wear it with indigo skinnies.

I've got the bird fear - everytime I go into sitting room I shudder. We're going to get something to stop them coming down again - silly birds.

Esher - did you get the white co maxi in the end?

eshermummy · 06/06/2010 21:36

Vin - really am v sorry to hear about your friend, that's very sad.

Bloss - your outfit sounded lovely, glad you had a lovely day.

LTEC - those shoes are quite £££ however, the heel on them looks v similar to the one on my sandals from R&B and I have found mine really useful - high and dressy when flats won't do but can still run around after kids/push pram etc so I say yes

MM - last night sounds good . Think we were in similar garb today - was at friend's daughter's 3rd birthday and was wearing white racer back vest with tailored grey harems from whistles with a McQueen-alike skull & crossbones print scarf in blue. Such good fun this afternoon , the toddlers weren't really up for the chocolate game so the mummies pushed them aside did it for them - you know, the one where you have to eat a bar of choc with a knife and fork whilst wearing hat, scarf and gloves. Lots of bemused daddies (and offspring) looking on

Back to school tomorrow so been sorting out uniform, kit and dinner money etc, all with the beginnings of an early hangover bleugh.

CHOOGIRL · 06/06/2010 21:41

Evening all

Just checking in whilst watching the final ever 24 .

Welcome Tether Aargh and Clara. Great to see more lurkers coming in.

Vin really sorry about your friend
Tracey Hope the house is now clean following birdgate
MM Thanks for the strapless tip. Tried your sister's and it meets the brief of being both pretty and firm. Still to find the right maxi, but at least I know I can now do strapless.
Esher/Tracey Love the ASOS stripe maxi
Roma Thanks for the recipe. Had it instead of my normal fish and chips on Friday and it was yum. Have also ordered troife from Ocado so I can have again this week.
Bloss glad you had a great day.

Thanks for all the Montreal shopping tips, am starting to get a bit excited. Although not sure what to pack. Shall I go capsule or take advanatage of BA's generous 3 x 32 kg bag allowance?

Cake cannot believe you are now 9st 8lb well done - although that means when I get back I will have 4 weeks to shed the bulk before S&B meet up. Did you find a R&B. I think Bromley High Street would be easiest for you.

Have just had a friend round who wanted to borrow a dress for a black tie do. In the trying on session discovered a LV clutch I forgot I had

eshermummy · 06/06/2010 21:41

Tracey - no I didn't order the white co maxi in the end - although you said the length was ok, someone else on another thread said it was very long and then all the talk of the frumpiness of white co trousers put me off.

monkeysmama · 06/06/2010 21:50

Choo really pleased about the strapless bra. Makes a world of difference I think. I an wear so much more since I got good strapless & minimiser bras. Though
Mine are baby related - was a 34c pre 2years of bfing so no idea what I'll end up if they decide to stop producing milk.

hellsbelles · 06/06/2010 22:13

Vin - how very sad to hear about your friend. I'm so sorry.

Bloss - good on you getting all those compliments you must have been looking gorgeous.

MM - sounds like you had a good time. I need to check out that loreal stuff...my legs aren't as brown as I want them to be.

LTEC - I agree with Esher...the heels look very good. I think I have the same R&B ones Esher does and even I can walk well in them! They are obviously meant to be yours if they only have your size left.

Plum - you sound very prepared - well done. The website told me 2 days for the 'attack' phase...and that wasn't enough. I don't know why but I just didn't lost any weight for about 4 days...and now I have lost some as has DH. Not enough yet! But I am finding it easy. I hope you find it works. It is quite a weird one.

I prefer the South Beach Diet for it's variety but as I had used that before I think my body has got a bit used to it and I didn't lose weight as much when I tried it for a 2nd time (sounds mad I know).

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 22:31

well done hells!! go on, spill - are you under 10 as you hoped you would be?

I had a look at the Dukan website but couldn't find the sign up button. It said my weight was okay, is that why?

agree re: system getting accustomed. Anyone contemplating Carol Voderman - it seems to only work once!! I mean, if you lose, then coast, then try to lose again.. it's no go. If you lose, eat chocolate 6 times a day, then do it again, it'll probably help

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 22:33

OMG!! Choo!! the final ever!! we have 2 to go. I am sick with worry that Jack will die.

Loved his Ned Kelly moment But OMG, much as I leeeeerve him (in the unfaithful to my dh sense) he is all wrong as a lover. That made me a bit green around the gills - and not with jealousy.

AllBuggiedOut · 06/06/2010 22:40

mm I am aiming for the same re bandeau tops, so have this on order and will report back if it's any good. Spent Saturday in the garden in this which I really enjoyed wearing and stayed in place!

CHOOGIRL · 06/06/2010 22:41

Cake Don't fancy Jack - his girlfriends always meet a grisly end!!

I'm on the edge of my seat but will not spill

I do really love Julian Macmahon (sp) and he is a plastic surgeon. He is Aussie (son of ex prime minister I think and ex of Danni). Do you have his number??

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 22:43

ha!! you think you need to tell me who Julian is!!???

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 22:44

that was a joke.

What do you think of those shoes please Choo?

AllBuggiedOut · 06/06/2010 22:54

I like the shoes LTEC

And seems Asos did a Carrie belt, but sadly a couple of years ago.

CHOOGIRL · 06/06/2010 22:55

Oops In my haste to catch up I think I have missed a couple of pages of threads.

I like those shoes Cake and think they would go really well with your snakeskin dress and your RI Skinnies.

Have you worn the maternity Choos yet?

OMG Last five minutes.

LetThemEatCake · 06/06/2010 23:05

ah thanks ABO asos was one of the first places I looked. I am way behind the times on this belt thing (been pregnant pretty much non-stop since 2005) but I was very impressed with how that belt worked with everything!!

possible ebay contender?

damn you for bringing up the maternity Choos, Choo!! (these for anyone who doesn't know that I bought them with my Health in Pregnancy grant ) ... I was just contemplating their (unworn) fate tonight. However, my social life is about to take off in a big way what with sleeping baby and arriving mum!! So will hang on a bit longer....

RedBlueRed · 06/06/2010 23:08

variety

I like this one

vintage

hf128219 · 07/06/2010 05:32

I think 'Maternity' Choos are very wise!!

Off to work now. Will catch up tonight.

Have a great day!

Romanarama · 07/06/2010 07:15

Hello everyone! I seem to have missed about 300 posts, and am bound to fail to catch up so apolos all. hf you go to work v.early! Tracey we have birds nesting in the chimney breast in our bedroom. They can't come in as there's a metal 'door' at the bottom of the chimney, but they make an awful racket. I'm going to get it swept and the top of the chimney netted once I'm sure the chicks have flown.

I have found a new au pair - she wants to work in couture, so I hope I will have an S&B ally. She is of course 20 and v.beautiful, so it will either be a vicarious thrill or really annoying.

Anyone else fed up with all the press articles about ugly old hands like SJP etc? I have hands like that but had managed not to worry about it too much until recently.

The secret to enjoying a villa holiday is either to take the au pair with you, or to hire a full-time maid from a local agency, so you don't have to cook, clean, iron or tidy anything. But if you can afford it, I imagine the best holidays for families are all-in resorts, like the top end of Club Med etc. Sooo ££££££ though, much cheaper to rent a house and pay a maid.
