Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

If I don't wear any make-up I look 'alright', but nothing special.

If I spend 2 mins puotting on eyeliner, mascara and blusher, I am transformed into a Right Bloody Hottie.

Well, okay, maybe not quite that gorgeous, but I do look a damn sight better. So 99% of the time I force myself to spend 2 mins in front of the mirror every day.

I always forget to reapply, though.

Hmm...men with makeup. I still can't get my head around that one - they either wear black eyeliner for the goth look (like the super-talented but hollow-eyed Tim Minchin) or the face powder highlights every single strand of stubble. Not a good thing.

Perhaps they just need to learn how to apply it properly?

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 16:55

Riven- are you serious?
You need to get to Boots more- they do all kinds of lippie that doesn't come off- and the idea is that you re-apply. It's not going to be still on your lips after 20 years.

Because I don't like it - and if I put anything around my eyes it makes them water and itch, even sensitive stuff. So I go au natural every day and don't care.

Hate the trolley dolly look.

tearinghairout · 08/02/2010 16:55

OP - why is it important that you look your best at all times anyway? I've heard that one before and I just don't get it.

Why not just sometimes, with most of the time looking ... normal?

MunchMummy · 08/02/2010 16:56

Oh and I spend alot of time outside in all weathers and wearing makeup makes me look like a panda if it rains (knows from bitter experience in my college days)

I rarely wear make-up occasionally on a night out (but not always then). I am well over 40 and most people think I look much younger.

If I wear make up I just look like I'm wearing make-up. It doesn't change my bone structure or my colouring or my eyes. It might for a very short while convince people that my eyes are bigger than they really are but its only a temporary illusion and after that most people are more influenced by what I say and how I behave than whether my make-up is skilfully applied or whether I'm wearing none.

And I speak as someone who wore more make-up almost all the time a few years ago. People don;t react to me any differently and I don;t have to worry about rubbing mascara over my face when I've forgotten I'm wearing it!

If wearing make-up is so essential to "making the best of yourself", why don;t men do it? It's just conditioning.

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 16:57

Snigger at wordsonascreen - perhaps we should all have more sex and we wouldn't need makeup?

brimfull · 08/02/2010 16:57

when men say they prefer women without makeup they mean they like natural looking faces rather than garish makeup
most men would think she had none on

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 08/02/2010 16:57

PP -it's all a matter of opinion, isn't it?

If the women who are having make up applied in department stores are being 'made up properly' - well, frankly if I had that on me I'd go straight hope and wash it right off.

I'm quite happy inflicting the face I was born with (and the brass neck it fits onto) on the world, thanks

Riven - I had exactly the same experience with lippy too. How DOES it stay on?!!!

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 16:58

If I don't wear any I get paranoid that people are looking at me thinking 'Ugh, she's got no make up on'

I would feel naked in the office without it on.

wordsonascreen · 08/02/2010 16:59

Riven stop going on about being 41

It it NOT fecking old!

[37 and in denial]

stressheaderic · 08/02/2010 16:59

My natural skin on my face is horrible. It's grey, uneven, wrinkley, acne-scarred and threadveiny around my nose.
Therefore I prefer to cover it up, and do so every day. It makes me feel better and less tired, that's all there is to it really.

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 17:01

Shall we have a whipround and buy Riven a decent lippy?

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/02/2010 17:02

Isn't the red lipstick thing meant to mimic the way our labia get swollen and red when we're horny? So on a man, what would be the equivalent?

OP - why is it important that you look your best at all times anyway?

It matters to me- I have high standards of personal maintenance! we're only here a short time- may as well look your best when you can- you're a long time dead. and I do look "normal" when I am made up!

Riven- it is quite simple to find a lippie that stays put- you buy a long-last one. But it's a bit weird to say why re-apply, don't you think? Bit like washing your hair once, then saying why do I need to do this again?

As long as it's contoured with good blush technique, Bobbie, I'd say that's an excellent suggestion.

Kewcumber · 08/02/2010 17:10

If I had to wash my hair more than once a day I would be saying "why do I need to do this again".

I've made my profile live again - I realise that you can;t see my face in great detial but do I really look like I would scare small children and horses without make up? Thats good enough for me day to day - might spruce myself up a bit more for going out. If I didn't do that, how would anyone know I was making a special effort?

Kewcumber · 08/02/2010 17:11

any long lasting lipstick I have tried just dries up and stains your lips. Natural looks much better than that.
