Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

Oh yes, some definition definitely required...

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 17:13

Some lippy can feel greasy on your lips Riven, some can feel dry, my hair sticks to my lip gloss (loving sexy motherplucker gloss atm) but I still wear it.

Lets have a lipstick amnesty and send to Riven, she can tray lots of shades and post pictures for us to comment on. Ooh I'm excited.

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 17:13

Ah, but Kewcumber, you are dark.

Makes all the difference. Eyes have natural definition, skin tone more even.

I am fair, pink, piggy without eyemakeup.

This is why am jealous of brunettes. They get away with it.

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 17:15

Just want to clarify that the hair that sticks to me lip gloss is the hair on my head, not my tash hair! Sounded a bit odd ....

alexpolismum · 08/02/2010 17:15

I don't wear any because I'm naturally gorgeous.

So there!

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 17:16

Well me too Alex of coursem however a little bit of make up enhances our gorgeousness

bubblagirl · 08/02/2010 17:18

i dont wear any on day to day basis only if im going out out not just school run and shopping

luckily i have been blessed with good skin and have never caked it in make up

i wear tinted moisturiser and lip gloss thats about it on night out i will wear mascara matte foundation and lipstick

i want to keep my skin good for as long as i can without caking it in make up

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 17:19

Bloody hell, Dr Northerner, just looked at your profile page.

I wouldn't need to wear bloody makeup if I looked like you.

OrmRenewed · 08/02/2010 17:19

"if not, why not?"

I consider my wrist slapped!

I didn't wear any today as I was working from home and the only time I went out was for the school run. But I do normally. More than I did actually as I am not old and wrinkly.

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/02/2010 17:21

This is a hilarious thread - we're all being scolded by someone just for not spending money on unnecessary make up items?
rofl

I don't wear foundation ever. Don't need to. I am lucky in that I inherited my mother's great skin.
I am not foolish because I don't wear lots of make-up. I found that after 35 I didn't look so awake without a touch of mascara but that's about all I wear and a bit of subtle lippy occasionally.

OP, you mention having
"pasty face , stubby pale eyelashes and purple shadows"
You clearly need to wear make up to feel good about yourself. For those of us who don't have purple shadows, stubby eyelashes and pasty faces, wearing the cosmetics that you prescribe would be unnecessary.
Personally I like to look like me all the time. With a full face of slap I would look quite different and would feel strange then taking it off and looking different at night-time.

I'm all for women doing what they want but for women blessed with good skin and a radiant glow, spending money on make up as you suggest would simply be allowing herself to be influenced by the marketing campaigns of the cosmetics companies telling us we should be wearing this and that and buying products that we don't need.

tearinghairout · 08/02/2010 17:23

For my wedding I wanted to look gorgeous (natch) but virginal and un-made-up, so I bought a lipstick in the shade closest to my natural lips that I could find. So what was the point?

On teh telly there is some awful makeup. The Polish girl who won Strictly sometimes looked as if someone had punched her in the eyes. Almost as bad was Karen Hardie on So You Think you can Dance on Sunday, and watch out for the beautiful what's she called, that welsh singer, on that Opera programme on Friday, (are you still with me? I realise I'm ranting a bit here...) but her make-up is so over the top it's embarrassing. Doesn't look nice, IMO, just totally overdone.

alexpolismum · 08/02/2010 17:23

Dr Northerner - if I wore makeup I'd be so stunning that other women would never be able to live up to it, so I actually don't wear any in order to do the rest of you a favour!

You don't have to look different 'with a face of slap' but you can look better.

Makeup, if applied correctly and the right consistancy/clours etc should always enhance you features and even out skin tone. All of us would benefit from a little make up of that I am certain. If you don't ahve the time/money/inclanation then that's up to you.

hazeyjane · 08/02/2010 17:24

Not offended Flight, I just hope there are some shades of peach in between full on orange slap and no makeup look!

I don't agree that people who think they look better without makeup have never had it applied properly. I have friends who definitely don't suit makeup, they have lovely creamy skin, good bone structure and delicate features and look fabulous without it (and they are nearer 40 than 30).

Kewcumber, you look great, and certainly look like you have good skin, if a makeupless photo existed of me i would post it on my profile to show just how bad my makeupless face can look!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/02/2010 17:24

I wear it if I am in the mood - usually just mascara and eyeliner.
Don't need owt else.

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/02/2010 17:27

proof that you can still look like a right monkey with make-up on

woodyandbuzz · 08/02/2010 17:39

I don't own any make up and I can't remember the last time I wore any (probably some friends put it on me at university!).

My skin is probably average, I really don't think about it ever, I only wash it with soap in the bath, no other skincare . I am plain, but again, I never think about it and couldn't care less! If I go to do something, I think about what I am doing - I give no thought to makeup/skin condition. If I get a spot, it's on display!

I don't mind if people wear makeup or not. I usually don't even notice, I am listening to what they are saying.

sungirltan · 08/02/2010 17:43

i wear makeup every day. foundation, eye concealer, powder, mascara, liquid eyeliner, eybrow pencil and alternate between cheek stain and blusher depending on seasons etc (add tons more for a night out). i am a slave to eyeliner - i love 60's stuff and liquid eyeliner is part of who i am.
I have very good skin (i get asked for id to go in bars v often even though i am 30) - i specualte that this might be because i have sheilded my skin with makeup for many years. I am very confident about my looks and lots of other aspects about my identity but fyi my dh sees me with a bare face every single day and it doesnt bother me.

anyway why does wearing make up have to be an indicator of self esteem- isn't that a bit outdated? in that case then following fashion and getting your hair done must be too - goodness we must all HATE ourselves!

wearing makeup doesn't make you insecure/shallow. not wearing makeup doesn't make you superior/super confident/a martyr. indeed some make up you see about makes the wearer look daft - but no more or less than outfits/hairdos.

lastly i used to work in recruitment. i probably didn't notice much if candidates wore lots/no make up but i did take an interest in whether they wore a suit/appropriate smart wear, washed their hair, had tidy nails - you wouldn't expect anyone to argue 'i dont have time/i look great without it' against those - i just dont see how make up is any different - just a v rambly (sorry!) thought!

I always put make up on if I'm meeting freinds or going on a date and if at work I would then too but if I'm doing the school run or going to tescos I do not bother with the whole hair straightening make up applications and just put a hat on.

SolidGoldBrass · 08/02/2010 17:52

PP: What you don;t seem to get is that it isn't necessarily everyone's job to be looked at. While a lot, though not all or even most, people quite like to put make up on some of the time (and when I wear it I tend to go for sparkles and lurid colours, there being no point at all in 'natural' look make up) but when youre just going to the shops, or on the school run, or doing a job that isn't in any kind of display profession, why on earth should you bother if you'd rather do something else? It;s like people who whine about other people dressing 'unfashionably' - as long as a person is clean, doesn't smell and isn't wearing something horrendously inappropriate (such as the Cradle of Filth Jesus Is A CUnt t-shirt to teach a reception class) why is it anyone else's business?

sallyjaygorce · 08/02/2010 17:58

Cradle of Filth on it's own though, is appropriate for a newborn's nanny.

Cyb · 08/02/2010 18:00

yes I wear it everyday even if I am home alone all day. Because I look SHIT without it. it might only be concealer and a bit of mascara, but my face is GRAY

Takver · 08/02/2010 18:03

"OP - why is it important that you look your best at all times anyway?

It matters to me- I have high standards of personal maintenance! we're only here a short time- may as well look your best when you can- you're a long time dead. and I do look "normal" when I am made up! "

PP, I think most women (and men) look hideous wearing make-up - artificial and older than their real age. But if people want to make themselves look grim, that's up to them, I wouldn't dream of starting a thread saying 'why do some people wear makeup when it generally makes them look 10 years older than they really are'

I do like the tiger look, though, Kewcumber, but I'm not sure its really suitable for every day
