Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

"I prefer to see women who accept and embrace their age and their natural skin.

Anything else smacks of caring too much about appearance, which is fair enough if people want to but it seems so unnecessary and so vain to put in all that effort.

Basically in answer to your question, because we/I have better things to do. "

But FlightAttendant, my skin au natrel, is blotchy, scarred and has patches of dark pigment, I don't think that just because I spend 5 minutes applying some concealer and foundation (hopefully not an orange mask!) in the morning I am particlarly vain or have nothing better to do with my time!

Also

"day to day I don´t bother-which is why I have great skin & don´t need it!"

Diddl, there are plenty of people who wear makeup everyday and have great skin, I thought good skin was mostly down to genetics and hormones.

"I'd love to know how to do it so I don't look like a twat" - by which I meant so I don't look like a twat when wearing makeup. I don't think I look like a twat generally. At least not as a general rule.

MillyR · 08/02/2010 15:24

Bicnod - watch makeup bloggers to learn how. Start with Lisa Eldridge on youtube.

Bicnod · 08/02/2010 15:39

Thanks Milly - DS (9m) and I just watched her morning after makeup part 1... DS loved her and was squealing and waving so might get to watch part 2 later on One thing I've always wondered is how do you choose the colour of foundation?

SolidGoldBrass · 08/02/2010 15:42

I think more men should wear make up, actaully. Men often have grey baggy faces, zits, piggy eyes etc that would look better if they made a bit of an effort, why don't they?

MillyR · 08/02/2010 15:43

She does a video on foundation, including choosing colours.

Bicnod · 08/02/2010 15:49

Cool - will check it out. oOOOO, this could be the start of a whole new me.

SolidGold - you just described the face that looks back at me from the bathroom mirror pretty much every morning perhaps it really is time I started putting on a bit of slap... its the grey skin that's a fairly recent thing (due to lack of sleep I reckon - DS isn't a great sleeper) - maybe a bit of foundation would make me look less like an ageing rocker.

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 16:02

It's not true to say that you only need make up to cover "bad skin"- I have great skin -people are always telling me that- and I have used foundation since I was about 14 as I am deathly pale without it. Foundations these days are so sheer, light-reflecting and come in so many formulations that no one needs to look as if they are wearing a mask that will crack. If it feels like that to you, then you've got the wrong products for your skin type.

Men- well my DH has started using a men's moisturiser with high SPF and he has been known to rave about how good my concealer is if he as a horrible zit.

Call me judgemental if you want to, but I have to admit that I rarely see anyone who would not look better ( and by that I mean enhance their features) with a bit of slap- be that mascara, lippie or a bit of blusher.

Women have been putting make up on since the Egyptian times- so we can't all be wrong!

Most people who say they don't need it are wrong imo.

Blackduck · 08/02/2010 16:07

Not saying you are wrong, just saying its my choice not to wear any and I couldn't give a fig if I would look better with some...

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 08/02/2010 16:09

I have yet to see someone wearing well applied make up and think they looked better bare faced.

Except Kate from Lost, and her castaway look is most likely acheived with a touch of concealed and mascara anyhow.

I wear it most days, unless I am in the middle of a gardening or DIY frenzy, and then I don't try to kid myself that I look better. I don't. I look like a 15yo with wrinkles.

meltedchoc · 08/02/2010 16:10

i wear make-up most days, not because im vain or obsessed with my looks(or lack of).
Its because i have a horrible horrible discolouration patch thats the size of a ten pence on my face.my skin is pale so it really shows.
I prefer to hide it.The more slap i pile on the better i feel tbh. bright lipstick and falsh lashes detract from "the mark" imo.

NellyNaggBagg · 08/02/2010 16:16

Any conversation that involves the words 'products' and 'skin type' makes me feel as if I might just be going to have a breakdown.

However, Ggirl is saving my sanity, as I am laughing at the idea that I am wrong about my fabulous un-made-up looks.

Flightattendant · 08/02/2010 16:16

Hazeyjane, I'm sorry if I offended you...or anyone else. I was speaking very frankly and should probably not have been so honest. My views are prejudiced from years of my own mother spouting about how awful makeup is...I had a particular kind of woman in mind when I said those things.

I seem to see them in droves whenever I venture into Fenwicks. They are over 60, perfectly coiffed and frankly terrifying

I really have nothing against nice people whatever their makeup situation, but the kind of militantly made over pensioners do freak me out a little. So does the orange girl who bullied me at school and now has a child at ds' school...not because she is orange though.

carmenelectra · 08/02/2010 16:31

I wear make up every day, not full on slap but bit foundation, blusher, highlighter mascara and lip gloss. My God, that sounds full on! I think very few people look better or even nice without makeup, unless you have perfect or maybe lightly tanned skin. Even those who look bare faced eg. the poster who mentioned castaway have light make up on to make them look bare faced.

The only time i dont wear anything is during the day on a beach holiday.

I feel more attractive and more 'dressed' with make up. I especially could not live without lip gloss.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 08/02/2010 16:36

Well, the only 'made up' look I like is the oen that looks as though you're not wearing any make up

I only wear absolute minimum (powder, basically) because

  1. I don't like the made-up look
  2. In any case, I can't be arsed - life's too short
  3. Though admittedly a different genetic inheritance and different bone structure would make a great difference to my appearance, I am what am and baby, I don't give a damn
wordsonascreen · 08/02/2010 16:37

Am chuckling at "heart and lashes of a drag queen"

You can buy makeup that is not full of junk and is not tested on animals.

Hulababy · 08/02/2010 16:43

I think it is quite sad that some people feel that their own skin/face without slap on it is not good enough.

I do generally wear make up when out and about, but very little. I have a bit of face base on and then a bit of bronzer - as my skin is quite pale esp in the winter. However, if just nipping to shops, rather than work, I am happy to go without.

DH has always commeted on how he prefers it when I am not made up. He likes the natural look.

When I go out properly then yes I wear make up - but even my version of beung made up, is half what some people feel they need for a basic day out and about.

I do think my skin is better for not always being covered in lots of make up.

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 16:47

This debate will run and run......I wear make up every day, apart from tghe ocassional Sunday when I am just dossing at home, but as a rule, even if I'm just popping to the post office I wear a bit of something. Normally tinted mouisturiser, blusher and mascara and some lip gloss. Takes about 3 minutes to apply.

I work in a trendy office full of women and everyone wears make up.

My proper makeup takes longer and I have drawers full of cosmetics and products - I love it!

DrNortherner · 08/02/2010 16:49

But I do think that to look good with no make up you really ahve to be late teens/early twenties.....after that we all need a bit of help.

Interestingly, I look better without make up after a very heavy outdoor exercise session!

wordsonascreen · 08/02/2010 16:50

I look much better after sex (be it indoor or outdoor)

tearinghairout · 08/02/2010 16:51

I used to wear it as a teenager, but now only really bother for a night out, and then just lipstick & eyeliner. I hate the feel of mascara.

Actually, the whole idea of makeup is daft. An ex-bf once said to me that he didn't understand why women coloured bits of their faces (eyes, cheeks, lips) and especially he didn't 'get' nail varnish.

Also we are conditioned to think that shoving on foundation, blocking the pores up, is in some way normal, and protecting our skin, whereas skin does a good job ogf that on its own, thanks.

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 16:52

I can only add that those of you who say you look better without it, have never been made up properly - or you would see the difference.

I am absolutely gobsmacked at the brass neck confidence of the rest of you who say you can face the world looking like whatever- whichever words you use- I am no shrinking violet, but there is no way I'd inflict my pasty face , stubby pale eyelashes and purple shadows to anyone outside my front door. I don't like that look, so why should anyone else have to see it?

I also don't recognise all these overly made up women you talk about- the worst offenders ime seem to be teeneagers who wear very matte, too-dark foundation. I'd say most older women don't wear enough make up (please note that not enough does not equate to orange cement, clown cheeks and red lippy) - they seem to have lost the will to live judging by their faces, let alone apply something to make them look a bit healthier.
