Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

Never have worn make up and don't own any.
TBH i wouldn't have a clue where to start!
Who knows if i would look better/worse with it on!

I don't agree that anyone over 20 needs make up.

lucykate · 08/02/2010 10:23

i don't wear make up. you say "lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them"

i say "lovely naturally pretty women whose lack of self confidence makes them assume they look better with blotches of coloured powder plastered over their skin, which cracks and flakes when they smile. sticky stuff on their eyelashes which makes them stick together when they blink and collects in a gloopy, black mess in the corner"

sorry op, but i think it's quite sad you feel full on war paint is necessary in order to step out the front door and i can't get my head round why so many bright, lovely women would rather face the world made up like a clown.

flossie64 · 08/02/2010 10:24

I don't wear make up everyday- When I do,I feel more dressed up.
Think really my attitude to it comes from the fact I worked in a bakery when I was younger and working in thst enviroment, I only ever wore make up when I was going out, and ergo I have carried on like that.
BTW- I don't have yukky skin, everyone thinks I good skin and I put it down to not piling the slap on all the time.

slightlystressed · 08/02/2010 10:24

Alot of women wear foundation really really badly though...I dont know whetehr its the wrong colour or just too much but you can spot it a mile off, and IMO looks much much worse than a bare faced lady.

I wear make up about once a week, but when I worked FT it was the other way round!

I find it very sad that some people think it neccessary to wear make up

as in feel that they should/have to to look normal

what the hell is wrong with my face naturally

I dont get it

who decided that natural was no longer good enough?

EdgarAllenSnow · 08/02/2010 10:34

rarely wear make up - i have two very small children and any lipstick instantly transfers to them (we are very kissy) even eye make up isn't safe from their proddy little hands.

also in terms of occasion, 4 days a week i am seen by no-one other than my immediate family (ok, and once weekly by people in Tescos)

my complexion isn't bad so i generally don't wear foundation even if i'm doing a full face.

although most women at work wear some make up there is no-one i am seeking to impress there! (Phone work, and whilst part-time, a career black hole)

i would always wear slap to go out on the other hand.

to be honest, am a little sad at the extent to which practicality dictates my appearance these days (no jewellery - it scratches th baby, no full-length skirts - they trail in the wet grass on dog walks - no skirt suits or dresses for work- can't cycle in them - no short skirts (lots of bending over) no high-neck dresses (can't BF) - i have nice things, and nice make up- but no place to really wear them.

but hey-ho that's life - motherhood was never going to be glamorous!

glasgowlass · 08/02/2010 10:35

I prefer natural beauty look, barely wear any when I go out too. Personal choice and preference.

"Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?"
I look good without make up, many many women do and infact look better without make up!

Cannot stand to see women caked in full make up, one step short of the circus!

Find it a very sad perspective you have OP that you feel the need to tell others that make up will transform them.

Each to their own though and you should respect that too.

(BTW the term "warpaint" makes me cringe)

hazeyjane · 08/02/2010 10:37

I wear makeup every day, but try not to wear too much, because I find the older I get the more 'made up' I look with makeup on.

I know loads of people who look fantastic without make up on, they usually have the basis of good skin though.

I've got skin that is blotchy and scarred (horrible acne when young), and I think it really does look better with a bit of makeup on to even it out and make it less shiny - it makes me feel better anyway - and I really hope i don't go out of the house looking like a clown!

twoisplenty · 08/02/2010 10:41

I don't own make up either...am currently looking into "natural" make up, because I don't want hundreds of chemicals smeared over my face!!

winnybella · 08/02/2010 10:45

because I don't need to wear foundation

Because all mascaras run

Because everyone can tell in the harsh daylight that you wear make-up, which sort of defies its purpose imo.

I only wear it when going out

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 10:48

As always on this thread, there seems to be the need say women who wear make up look unnatural and cake it on.

I take offence that full war paint looks lurid and that I cannot apply it in 5 minutes.

Without make up I look washed out- my foundation colour is always the palest you can buy in any brand. I have purple circles under my eyes- hereditary- so does my mum and daughter- no matter how much sleep I get.

I also have very short eyelashes, pale eyebrows and light hair. In other words, I look like a pasty blob.

In 5 minutes I can apply a layer of natural looking base, concealer, eye pencil, mascara, blusher and lipgloss- and a quick wash of pale neutral eyeshadw too. Okay, make that 10 mins maybe- but no more.

I am not doing it for the world- though Iwould not really want to inflict my wan looks on them- I am doing it for me. Ilike how I look with a bit of colour and the imperfections erased. Even if I am in the house all day- I work form home- I apply it.

I don't look painted, as many ofmy friends say "Oh you don't wear much make up"- little do they know- foundation primer, foundation, concealer, eye pencil, eye shadows, eyebrow powder, mascara, blusher, lip gloss.

It's nothing to do with self-esteem but everything to do with making me look the best I can for as long as i can.

If you have great skin that has some colour, long eyelashes that you can see, and so on, and you feel you don't need any slap, fine- but there are very few women who fall ito that category.

I do not wear make up. Last time was for my wedding because SIL forced me too! i tend to agree with LucyKate.

Rhubarb · 08/02/2010 10:50

I don't because I can't be arsed and prefer my skin to be able to 'breathe'.

Because when you get used to seeing someone with make-up on and then you see them without they look 10 years older and positively ill. I'd rather people get used to the way I look without so that when they see me with make-up I (hopefully) look 10 years younger and glowing with health!

I use a moisturiser every day and that's it. If I'm going to meet someone for work however then I will wear a little mascara, eyeliner and foundation.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 08/02/2010 10:53

I used to and then was late one day and everyone asked me if I was ill, it made me stop immediately

THIS IS ME!! I am not ill it is just me. so I do wear mascara and lipstick if I am going out for something special but on a day by day basis I don't

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 10:54

Rhubarb it's a myth that skin cannot breathe with make up on! Make up actually helps your skin- it moisturises it and if it has an SPF it keeps the UV rays out and helps deflect pollution.
Honestly, I am shocked at how outdated some of you (young? mums are about make up textures. Foundations that crack? errr that went out in the 50s I think. Mascara that clogs- get a different brand. Looking like a clown? You must have lead very sheltered lives if these are the only examples of make up you have seen.

OP posts:
brimfull · 08/02/2010 10:54

I agree with you pp. There are a few people who don't need makeup and they are usually very young.

Most people look better with a little help , not necessarily the full works.

lucykate · 08/02/2010 10:59

pp, thanks for your concern but i haven't led a very sheltered life , i'm 39, and my point of reference is not the 1950's, its the school playground this morning.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 08/02/2010 10:59

I wear make up to work and for what I laughingly call 'going out' but am not keen any other time. I have horrible skin and look just as crap with make up as without so I don't bother.

I was never taught how to do make up properly, which probably explains why it doesn't improve me. I echo completely what Dumbledoresgirl says. My mother is a bit of cream/touch of mascara person so I didn't learn anything from her.

LaDiDaDi · 08/02/2010 11:00

Lol, yes I've been asked if I was ill before when in fact I'd just not had time for make-up before work!

Hollyoaks · 08/02/2010 11:01

I'm shocked by how many people don't . I couldn't go to work and face a bunch of teenagers without it!

I know this says more about my self esteem then those who don't wear it, though I do feel that although it doesn't look 'natural' as I want people to see that I'm wearing it, it doesn't look garish or painted on.

I don't know anyone with skin good enough to not wear foundation at least and not look better though. Just imho though.

SerenityNowakaBleh · 08/02/2010 11:03

I wear make up every day, but for work. I have to look professional and it helps. Rather than spend money on foundation, I prefer to look after my skin and spend the effort on that, and I have pretty good skin most of the time (I have been told that I look younger than I am).

I think it is sad and terribly unfair that so many women feel that they have to wear make up. Yes, it's nice. There are times when I love putting tons of the stuff on and looking like a transvestite gone wild in Boots. But, I think women should learn to appreciate their natural beauty more, rather than being forced into an "ideal". You say you're pale - so what? Lots of people are.

Rhubarb · 08/02/2010 11:04

purple, I'm not a young mum thanks very much and most moisturisers now contain SPF, whereas the last time I looked my foundation didn't.

I'm not criticising anyone who does wear make-up, I answered the OP about why I don't. So why do you feel the need to criticise and patronise those who don't wear any? What do you care?

ladylush · 08/02/2010 11:04

I don't wear it every day. I like being fresh faced. I have good skin so am lucky. I think I look plainer without make up but like the difference make up makes when I want to feel 'done up'.

NellyNaggBagg · 08/02/2010 11:06

DDG, I am with you on the not-owning-any-make-up front. My mum didn't own any either, and she was gorgeous. I am vey attractive just as I am (and don't look remotely grey in the face, PP).

If I saw women in full make-up in the playground, I'd tend to feel sorry for them and think that they had low self-esteem.
