Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

I dislike wearing a lot of make up partly because it is so uncomfortable.

That thing where you take a sip of tea and find your mug has pink stuff on it,
or you try on a top and it gets foundation all over it, or need to rinse your face because some child has smeared you with yogurt - and suddenly it requires a full de-surface and re-surface, rather than just a quick wash and dry.

The fact my skin is always so much worse after wearing make up, however carefully i think I have got it off;

and the fact that whatever I use on my eyes, it makes them itchy and sore and I end up with bigger rings than I already had.

Maybe this just means I'm sensitive to the make up but really, I have tried a lot of different ones, and they all seem to do it. I'd look better with mascara on for sure, but it just is so painful. It isn't worth it.

wigglybeezer · 08/02/2010 13:58

I wear make up sometimes but i don't generally like how it feels on my skin, I never feel as clean with foundation on for example, also I have found it IS more difficult, even with posh makes to do a good job as you get older, fine lines and open pores and things show up when foundation migrates into them.

I am happy to be judged by what I say and do rather than what I look like

Plus, I can cry, kiss my kids, snog DH, go out in the rain, without my face coming off.

Slubberdegullion · 08/02/2010 14:03

Not every day, for the 'letting your skin breathe' wisdom-from-my-mother reason. Same with underpants in bed, and sea water being the cure of all ills.

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 14:05

My mother told me to let my skin breathe.

She also told me not to wash my hair when on my period.

I choose to ignore both

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/02/2010 14:08

Please share your mothers wisdom on underpants in bed Slubber

Slubberdegullion · 08/02/2010 14:10

Well I have a lovely dewy looking complexion (and undersmile), so my mother was spot on with the whole breathing thing.

Sea water however does not cure pneumonia I discovered to my consternation last year.

2 out of 3 aint bad though.

sallyjaygorce · 08/02/2010 14:11

I may have the face of a flushed and spotty woman, but I have the heart and lashes of a drag queen.

Slubberdegullion · 08/02/2010 14:12

hello there bibbity (yes have been 'off' and flirting with LabradorForums)

You absolutely must never go to bed with underpants on or you develop 'guinea pig hutch bottom'.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/02/2010 14:14

Erm ... undersmile ?

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 14:14

Guinea pig hutch bottom?

diddl · 08/02/2010 14:18

I don´t because I don´t need it.

I usually wear some to go out, but for day to day I don´t bother-which is why I have great skin & don´t need it!

Slubberdegullion · 08/02/2010 14:18

Vulva has been vetoed at my local dinner party circuit so I have to use my 2nd alternative undersmile.

Bobbie, you need to get your head in a guinea pig hutch and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I do because I "need" to. And I have good skin - it's just pasty without. I don't look younger with make-up but I look plain without.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/02/2010 14:21

Lol at your mother Slubber, your vulva and your guinea pigs

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 14:23

Ooh, I really don't, Slubber...

hazeyjane · 08/02/2010 14:25

The impression from reading this thread is that women either

a) don't wear any makeup and have no self esteem issues

or

b) plaster thick, orange goo on their faces every morning, apply thick 1960s style mascara and bright red shiny lipstick, and have terrible self esteem.

I see women around me of all ages some looking fantastic in tons of makeup (goth stylee), minimal makeup and no makeup.

I also see women around me of all ages looking not so great in tons of makeup (Jordan stylee), minimal makeup and no makeup.

I expect they have a range of self esteem issues (about skin, age, weight, grey hair, bad teeth etc etc) between them.

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 14:28

at sixties style mascara and red lippy.

At least I'm not orange

Slubberdegullion · 08/02/2010 14:28

although my aired-vulva is absolutely not a lolling matter.

yes anyway, make up then

As an slight aside I never wear eyeliner but I did put some on for a party a few weeks back and THREE men who were not my husband said I looked beautiful. I'll be wearing it some more I think.

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 14:29

Eyeliner and mascara absolute essentials for me.

Look porcine without.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/02/2010 14:30

Ooh what a judgy judgingtons thread - on both sides.

I wear make up pretty much every day - it is part of my morning routine. I would no more forego wearing make up that I would omit to wash my hair and brush my teeth. But that's my choice - I certainly don't judge someone for not wearing make up every day. That's daft.

It doesn't mean I look like Krystal Carrington. Although I use a variety of products I prefer a natural look - so dont have those vile mascara which make you look like you have spider on your eyes, and I never wear lipstcoj as i hate leaving lipstick marks on cups.

I also think that makeup is fun - really enjoy shopping for it, trying new stuff, just as much as I like buying new clothes and jewellery. I am also very good at putting make up on and I feel that I look better with it on - emphasises all the features I like (eyes, eyebrows) and omits all the ones I am not so happy with (purple shadows under eyes, paleness, white eyelashes).

albinosquirrel · 08/02/2010 14:34

I don't because I've never really learned how to (mainly because it has never been a priority)and also never seen the need - would be nice to be one of those people who enhance their features with it but TBH there are more people wearing makeup who don't do themselves any favours with it.

the only time i notice a grey complexion is really when women who normally wear full makeup are without it for some reason -its probably just the contrast with what is noraml for them.

i would say at work the people who wear the most makeup are all at the older end of the spectrum - and the more junior roles.

dinkystinky · 08/02/2010 14:39

OP - I dont wear make up on a daily basis, only on special occasions. But then I do exercise on a daily basis and the faff of applying/taking off/reapplying would drive me crazy. And I dont think its the end of the world that I dont wear make up - my skin and my features work fine without it - and I dont judge those who do apply make up. Each to their own I say.

Chandon · 08/02/2010 14:53

I always wear:

some kohl and mascara around my eyes, to look more "awake".

lip gloss or at least lip balm

quick brush and tidy of eye brows (Benefit Eye brow it)

no skin slap as I take my compelexion very seriously, and regularly do exercise and go to sauna so you get that lovely glow, naturally.

I also exfoliate and moisturise, and that way skin looks fine without foundation (am olive skinned so never get too pale).

On bad days I put on some face brightening powder (Dandelion, Benefit)and under eye concealer.

My DH would swear to anyone that I wear no make up and that he likes the natural look.

IMHO men don´t have a clue

So, I use make up to try and look prettier, yet natural, without looking like I have been made up IYSWIM

There are lots of women on the school run who look a bit grim in the mornings (some don´t even brush hair), and I do think they would look better if they´d only spend a few minutes looking in the mirror.

Then again, I guess I am a bit more vain than most....???? seeing the reactiosn on this thread!

Bicnod · 08/02/2010 14:57

I don't wear makeup unless I'm going out (which is VERY rare these days). I haven't got a clue how to apply makeup really - I look like a twelve year old experimenting with her mum's makeup box when I put anything apart from a bit of mascara/eyeliner/lipgloss on . I'd love to know how to do it so I don't look like a twat but think its probably a bit late to start learning now...
