And stop. Support and hand holding here to grow those talons

I reckon it does multiple jobs

  1. Makes cuticles soft and less snaggly and delicious
  1. Keeps fingers busy when they would otherwise be being cannibalised
  1. Encorages growth.

Thanks robin

FabMum1 · 04/10/2009 20:33

Another day of Burts Bees and hand cream (got L'Occitane) and my hands are looking fab. I am def treating myself to a french manicure kit as a treat, which one tho ?

Thank you so much for your help Cybil, you've been a gr8 support as well as all you other gr8 ladies

Geocentric · 05/10/2009 00:23

Hi everyone! I am very proud of myself: not a nibble all weekend AND we had the DCs cousins over for a sleepover so had 5 children under 7 for two days , so lots of nail-biting moments!!!

I really have to go out and get some cuticle cream though, maybe get a couple and leave one in the kitchen, one in the living room...

CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 07:24

Fab Mum I don;t like French manicures as such but I do like Rimmel French Manicure style nail colour, in sheer pink or beige. I find the white tips a faff

Geo well done give it a few more days and your nails will look TOTALLY different and you are no longer a nail biter

cantpooinpeace · 05/10/2009 08:42

I bit all mine last night watching X factor it was too tense, so I'm back in stubsville - starting again today (been here before)

Wanderingsheep · 05/10/2009 16:55

Haven't bitten since Thurs .

Having this thread is helping as I want to be able to come back and say that I haven't bitten my nails!

You can do it CPIP!

Well done everyone else, keep on going.

Cybil, thanks for all the advice!

CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 17:35

cant, you need an emery board/cream by you in these moments of weakness.

OP posts:
CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 17:36

Keep it up Wandering!

Don't you all feel so much more grownup not having ugly ragged stumps?

I've been following this thread with interest.

I don't bite my nails as such but they do peel badly and I bite the layers off. Yes, that's as yuck as it sounds. Plus I nibble the skin round the edges.

So I'm inspired by this thread and trying not to.

I do have one question - I went to our local Boots tonight and they didn't have the Lemon Burt Bees. But I've put on some Creative Design solar oil that I found in my drawer that I bought around New Year (resolution?) Will that do just as well or do you reckon you need a cuticle cream?

Oops sorry! Don't know how that happened.

pollywobbledoodle · 05/10/2009 21:59

well dd and i went around the house collecting up all the half used hand creams and cuticl creams/oils from previous drives to improve mitts....so far atrixo has the nicest feel and the scent remains and reminds us both not to nibble...the tempting hard ridgy bits round the top of the nails have softened

CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 22:11

Rip, anyhting you can rub in that will soften and moisturise and most importantly DISTRACT is fine

OP posts:
RipMacWinkle · 05/10/2009 22:15

Smashing - thanks Cybil. They're just getting shorter and shorter and the peeling is horrendous.

I've got to give this a try and I do like the idea of checking in with everyone in a support stylee

CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 22:23

Rip could that be a deficiency, all that peeling?

OP posts:
aquavit · 06/10/2009 10:09

I have a question - I don't bite my nails or cuticles, just the skin around them. Are there any handcreams or cuticle balms that help make these bits any less bite-able? best I've found so far is rubbing in vaseline but it doesn't half leave them greasy!

would love to have finger-edges that DON'T have scabs to match the dark red polish that I want to wear to a wedding in two weeks...

BTW RipMacWinkle, I had the peeling problem when I was working with a lot of very old paper and books, could it be something that you're coming into contact with?

Geocentric · 06/10/2009 11:48

Another possibility for Rip - do you use varnish? Lots of people are allergic to nail varnish. My grandmother had to use hypoallengenic stuff because her nails did exactly what you describe, peel away in layers.

I have allergy, too, but mine is contact allergy on my face.

RipMacWinkle · 06/10/2009 13:20

I'd come to the conclusion that it's just the way I am but I do wear a lot of polish - mostly clear nail envy (mainly in an effort to try and hide it). It's rare for my nails to be bare (but they are today so that I can rub plenty stuff in.

The thing is that i'm 32 weeks pregnant and I always thought your nails were supposed to get stronger during pg. Mine are getting worse!

FabMum1 · 06/10/2009 16:01

Well ladies its been nearly a week and no nail biting for me. Still using my Cuticle and hand cream all day long, they are just so so so much better.

Thank you so much for the support it has been a great help.

If I can stop then anyone can. I've bitten them for 25+ years, tried to stop many times before, but this time I actually feel positive about it. Probably because I have some support this time.

Keep it up ladies, we can do it !

CJCregg · 06/10/2009 16:13

Can I join in? Apart from two brief periods in my life, have always bitten nails and yukky skin around them.

Furious with myself because I actually managed to grow them this summer - we went on a seaside holiday and the sea and sun miraculously strengthened my nails and helped them to grow really quickly. Within DAYS they were strong and ready for nail varnish! But since coming back they've weakened again and are gradually breaking or being bitten in lax moments.

So - cuticle cream, here I come!

CybilLiberty · 06/10/2009 16:53

Welcome aqua and Cj. Aqua try to rub cream into your skin when you would ordinarily be chomping. Or are you a picker? I will scratch at my thumb skin with my forfinger nail when I'm stressed and make a right mess. Try to identify trigger times

aquavit · 07/10/2009 09:47

thankyou Cybill that is great advice - I've realised that I do it when breastfeeding, so I reached out for nearest moisturising thing - it was that Waitrose bottom butter - has worked a treat, and now my fingers stink of vanilla so that when they drift towards my mouth I smell it and remember not to bite!

Rip, my nails got peelier when I was pg too, they are back to normal now.

CybilLiberty · 07/10/2009 16:52

hooray! I have some bottom butter around too, I should use it
