Thanks Cybil. I wasn't commenting on the disgustingness or otherwise of cuticles and tweezers, just thought it must hurt. Think we're probably all pretty much agreed that nail biting isn't the most pleasant of habits

cantpooinpeace · 01/10/2009 18:07

no, but I reckon it's probably built up our immune systems. Every cloud an all that!

CybilLiberty · 01/10/2009 20:46

OR given us threadworms

Oh FFS! I've just absent mindedly bitten a nail whist looking at fb! Grr!

Right... Start again! Here we go!

Geocentric · 01/10/2009 21:46

Right, I've filed my nails, done my cuticles, put on clear varnish... I have a Goal, too, to keep me focused - 2 weddings in November. I think I'm going to put a new pic of my nails each week on my pc as wallpaper, that way everytime I turn it on I'll be reminded.

It's exciting having "quitting buddies"!

tattycoram · 01/10/2009 21:49

I want to stop too, really badly now that my 2.9 year old has started copying me

FabMum1 · 01/10/2009 21:58

I'm back!
I've been out today and bought a nail file/buffer, burts bees cuticle cream and a pink nail polish. I am just about to start filing and buffing and massaging, so here we go
Tonight is the night I wave goodbye to ugly bitten nails.

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 07:25

Welldone Fab mUm. You won;t regret it and they will grow much fsater than you think and look good while they are growing too

Morning nailbitersgrowers! I used an emery board on mine last night and I have to say that after only a week of using toddler alert my nails are looking so much better. I heartily recommend getting DCs to look out for your nail nibbling and shouting at you when you do it. Not only does STOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOP screeched in your ear make you realise what you are doing but then the guilt also immediately kicks in!

cantpooinpeace · 02/10/2009 08:44

Ok I'm gonna have a go - do you think they could look nice by Sat? I'm at a wedding ....

iggypiggy · 02/10/2009 09:13

Highly recommend french manicure for initial stopping - the extra layers of varnish on the ends of your nails seem to be more hardy, so less likely to chip and then be nibbled. I also carried nail file everywhere so if I break a nail, I file and don't chew ever - cos once you start...

Must admit that french manicure doesn't look the best on stubby nails - but is worth it! I just did my own with a boots french manicure kit.

Will leave you all to your quitting. Good luck!

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 12:52

cant, they could look BETTER if you moisturise your cuticles and paint nails a sheer colour.

OP posts:
cantpooinpeace · 02/10/2009 13:08

some fingers have no nail left to paint I think I will walk around with my hands in a fist all day!

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 13:09

ooh you really are a nibbler! Short of sticking on fake ones I think you are just going to have to grin and bear it. BUT make this the last time!

You don't want to be embarresed about your hands any more do you?

OP posts:
vickiadele · 02/10/2009 13:11

i started trying to grow mine 3 days ago, so far so good

cantpooinpeace · 02/10/2009 13:24

They are the worst they've ever been, very sore too. My friends shout at me alot and even my DD has started saying take you fingers out of your mouth mummy! It's deffo time to stop - you've all inspired me

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 13:26

when they are sore it's even worse.

OP posts:
Geocentric · 02/10/2009 13:28

Today I've been very good. It really helps to do the cuticles, the straggly bits drive me nuts usually.

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 13:38

well done geo. I have a pot next to me while I am on the computer (major chewing possibilites) and while I'm watching telly

OP posts:
Geocentric · 02/10/2009 13:41

I'll have to devise a strategy for watching TV and reading - those are my weakest moments.

Maybe I'll have to get some of that "chewellry" lol!

FabMum1 · 02/10/2009 13:47

Last night I filed, buffed, polished and used my cuticle cream, they are looking better already.
Today I have taken my cuticle cream out with me and when I get the urge to bite them I am rubbing it in instead. Its worked! I can believe how different they look already.
MUST KEEP GOING! NO MORE BITING!

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 13:48

Told you! A little effort really pays off. ANd now even if one breaks, or you have a secret nibble'to even one side up' if you carry on with cream polish, etc, it's not back to square one.

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/10/2009 13:49

Ooh I need to join you!

My nails are ok, used to bite them years and years ago and managed to stop - only to starting biting my cuticles and the skin round my nails. It's worse when I'm stressed, I can reduce my hands to bloody shreds in one evening!

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 13:51

Ali get the cuticle cream

OP posts:
cantpooinpeace · 02/10/2009 13:53

Yeah.....hands up those that have bitten to the point of throbbing/bleeding fingers ? Lets wave goodbye to the days of not being able to

Peel an orange

Get the end of the celotape up

Pick a coin up off the floor

Get the edge of a sticker up

be a hand model

pick your nose properly
