Am cross with myself now! Didn't buy any cuticle cream when out this morning because they didn't have Burt's bees (only went to tesco) and now have bitten the side of my thumb. Should have bought whatever they had...

On the plus side I bought Sally Hansen hadening stuff for nails so hopefully they won't split.

FabMum1 · 02/10/2009 14:01

Oh how I hated having throbbing fingers where I had bitten my nails so low. Even washing them used to sting.
But not anymore, my Burts Bees is my saviour a the mo.
Can anyone recommend a good hand cream ?

robino · 02/10/2009 14:06

Fabmum I find the bodyshop almond oil one good. Not entirely keen on the smell but even though it's heavy it sinks in nicely so you don't have to sit for ages with your hands still. Or maybe I've got the wrong idea and should have one that takes ages to sink in....

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 14:19

Can I just make a point- don't worry about growing your nails so they are 'long'.Long nails are harder to care for and easier to bite. Just make them more presentable so you are not ashamed/in pain, but can put nail varnsh on and it won't look completely shit.

ONe of the magazines has a free l'occitane handcream attached to it at the moment, l'occitane is gorgeous. Ouch yes to peeling an orange. And the embarassment of not being able to pick a coin up off the floor. I'm in. Have some nasty tasting stuff taht I will paint on once I have finished making a birthday chocolate cake for DH and will do cuticle cream regime this eve

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 15:07

I was going to suggest L'occitane as a handcream, it's ££ but by jingo it works.

has had to stop herself biting twice since last post.....when you're a hardcore biter you don't even notice you're doing it

FabMum1 · 02/10/2009 16:41

So far managed not to bite my nails once today, am so proud!
Thank you so much ladies for all your help, its great having buddies to do it with.
Will be looking into L'Occitane, do they do just one handcream or is there a few to choose from ?

Geocentric · 02/10/2009 17:19

There's one handcream I love by Avon - I checked their UK site though and can't figure out what it is in English, so it may be available locally only...

Mmm, I love L'Occitane but it costs megabucks over here. DH might be going to Dubai for work in November, I sense a shopping list in the making!!!!

Wanderingsheep · 02/10/2009 18:16

Apparently the motion of rubbing cream into your nails helps them to grow quicker too!

pollywobbledoodle · 02/10/2009 18:17

right am a sad case...so is dd 5yo....we are going to give up together...have just pinched up superdrug handbalm off my mum and it feels lovely

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 02/10/2009 18:40

I'm another nail biter here. I'm not allowed o wear nail extensions at work or nail polish so will have to get some sort of ivory shade and hope nobody notices. Will also get cuticle cream and an emery board. Can anyone recommend a good anti-biting paint as I've tried it before but it didn't put me off.

I bite mine so much that I cracked one of my front teeth and had to have a cap put on. It hasn't stopped me, I just have to use my canine teeth now. Yuck!

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 18:42

L'Occitane do lots of different ones, they are all fab and a great distraction from nibbling. It is revolting when you think about it, isn't it?

OP posts:
CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 18:42

Stripey you have to stop wothout foul tasting stuff

OP posts:
tattycoram · 02/10/2009 20:59

Wbhy do you have to stop biting without foul tasting stuff? I do think the Boots essentials stuff is quite good

pollywobbledoodle · 02/10/2009 22:14

surely foul tasting stuff can be good if you bite absent mindedly...just reminds you what you are doing

CybilLiberty · 02/10/2009 22:39

I think you have to stop by yourself. Like stopping smoking without a nicotine patch. The nail biting in itself has to be repulsive without the manky taste

OP posts:
Wanderingsheep · 03/10/2009 10:12

Hi everyone!

Hope none of you are nibbling. I haven't bitten since I started again!

Getting married next year and I don't want to have to have extentions for my ring!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/10/2009 11:24

I found some cuticle cream in a drawer so I've been using that. I will buy the Burt's Bees but it will require a trip into town which may not happen this weekend.

I have been doing quite well, still some skin and cuticle biting but not as bad as normal.

FabMum1 · 03/10/2009 13:22

Haven't bitten my nails or cuticles since Thurs, have been using my Burts Bees and what a difference. I am so proud.
Am thinking of buying a french manicure kit to help me through, something to look forward to.
Can anyone suggest a good one ?

CybilLiberty · 03/10/2009 21:45

Well done fabmum you get non nailbiter of week cup for displaying on your mantle

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/10/2009 00:16

Gah I am fecking annoyed with myself. Without even realising it, I have chomped my fingers this evening.

Must try harder!!

CybilLiberty · 04/10/2009 09:26

Ok Ali you must have cuticle balm within reach at crisis points AT ALL TIMES, I bet you were watching telly while you bit, weren't you?

That's one of my optimum biting times too, and on the PC and in the car, idling in a traffic jam.

You can start again, no problems.

OP posts:
robino · 04/10/2009 19:45

Cybil - you are VERY good at this. Thank you!

nails are looking good.

tattycoram · 04/10/2009 19:55

The cuticle cream thing really works doesn't it. I started yesterday and was endlessly rubbing cream into my nails today and already they look much much better.
