Shallow I know, but Sarah Brown has appalling dress sense and a terrible figure.

FGS woman, loser a bit of weight and get some nice gear. You're supposed to be representing us.

OP posts:

Well, sorry if this sounds humourless, but a few rather sullying, low remarks about Sarah's Brown's appearance and fashion sense are really going to have a palpable effect on the obese, aren't they? Pick on a faintly plumpish woman, thrust into public life. Bullseye! That's socking it to the obese. Oh yeah!

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 21:44

well, I'm not at all sure it is 'fact' - I grew up in the seventies when there seemed to be many more size 14s amongst teens.

The 'who cares' was directed at your rather hysterical 'flaunted', btw.

And you know, I do wonder whether obesity in female teens is actually more of a problem than mild body dysmorphia, marginal anorexia, and a general sense of being valued for one's appearance than one's abilities.

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 21:46

personally i did not comment nor particularly note her weight

my comments were on ill fitting clothes but folk seem determined to turn this into a di at those who comment on weight

weight is a huge issue for our society and should be addressed

I wish those who do 'address' it 'all the best' as going by comments on here people do not want to hear it

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 21:48

well precisely LadyT.

That's also kicking the food-industry where it hurts! That's almost interchangeable, surely, with banning trans-fats! That's enabling parents to find the freaking time to cook and not serve processed foods!

It's fucking lucky that style and beauty mavens are so consistently active in taking political action to ameliorate the personal circumstances that lead to obesity, isnt' it? Otherwise we'd all be fat fucks.

LadyThompson · 04/04/2009 21:49

The obesity debate and poor old Sarah Brown are two quite distinct matters. It is rather muddying, not to say disingenuous, to confuse the two. She might not be catwalk ready but she hardly looks like she is morbidly swathed in blubber, about to die of fat any second now.

LadyThompson · 04/04/2009 21:50

My last post was clearly not directed at you, Onebat

spicemonster · 04/04/2009 21:51

Address obesity by all means NAO - I'll be right behind you. But Sarah Brown is not dangerously obese. She's like most women in their 40s would be if they ate normally and didn't diet to fuck. Which incidentally is a lot worse as a role model for teenage daughters than being a size 14 (speaking as the daughter of a woman who was constantly dieting and who has one anorexic daughter, one obese and one middling who yo you diets). My mother's constant anxiety about weight ended up giving us all issues with food, and none of them are remotely healthy.

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 21:52

I was AGREEING with you you loon.

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 21:53

i do at no time think sarah to be obese

not thin but certainly not obese

LadyThompson · 04/04/2009 21:53

Oi Onebat! You misunderstood!

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 21:53

Oh I see.. sorry, confused by chicken tikka masala (full portion).

Swedes · 04/04/2009 22:00

OBM - LOL at full portion of chicken tikka.

I love the way people who are studiously thin turn being even slightly overweight into an urgent health issue. Go and find something sensible to worry about you brittle, osteoporotic bores.

Swedes · 04/04/2009 22:00

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 22:03

so its ok to criticise laugh at at and be downright rude bout the thin?

a joke about hip replacements - thin hair and heart disease might cause some to choke on their cheesecake?

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 22:04

oh the old 'fat and happy; adage is dragged out

not true ime

Swedes · 04/04/2009 22:10

NAO I agree. Being rude about the dangers of being thin is outrageous but no more outrageous than people being rude about the dangers of being overweight.

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 22:10

Really, Sarah Brown is NOT FAT. I've no idea whether she's happy - though she'd be pretty amazing if she were truly so, in the circs in which she finds herself - but who t f is dragging out the fat and happy adage?

You know, ime there are happy people and sad people. Successful and unsuccessful. Clever, and stoopid. At ease, and ill-at-ease. Outgoing, and inward-looking. Thinkers, and Doers. Haven't noticed a correlation with bodyweight with any of these.

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 22:13

thin is healthy

anorexia is another issue

not seen any any link on here between sarah brwon and chubby teens

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 22:23

Do you SERIOUSLY think that Sarah Brown is at risk, more than a .1 of a percentage point, from being a 14? I would imagine that you're looking at a year or so in life expectancy (again, an average) and that it would be hard to weed out other indicators such as lack of exercise, processed foods etc.

You sound as though you are rather over-invested in thinness.

TBH I think it INFINITELY more important to bring up my girl to withstand such propaganda about female thinness. After all, almost of this propaganda is directed towards making women conform to what men, rather arbitrarily, are perceived to find attractive, rather than towards what is genuinely healthy.

There is a worse fate than a year off your life-expectancy, you know, and that's a life lived in thrall to the belief that what is important about you is your relative attractiveness to men.

Swedes · 04/04/2009 22:25

I have a fat arse but my hair is luxe.

onebatmother · 04/04/2009 22:27

because she's worth it

NotanOtter · 04/04/2009 22:28

hope that question is not to me OBM because i have never ever ever said sarah brwon is FAT!
