Shallow I know, but Sarah Brown has appalling dress sense and a terrible figure.

'Thing is, politicians aren't film stars. They are civil servants, pen pushers, office workers, and Sarah, being wife of a politician, is, I guess dressed for the office, not the red carpet.'

I agree-people get in the public eye and people see them as public property, like a soap star. I think it is refreshing when people just get on with what they have to do and refuse make-overs.

tattycoram · 03/04/2009 08:27

I love the sparkly cardigan she wore in Aitch's link. So she wore something not quite right the other day. Big deal.

reach4sky · 03/04/2009 09:26

Sarah Brown does not have a dress allowance / wardrobe budget. No PM's wife does nor do they have a cook, wardrobe assistant or any other help whatsoever that isn't strictly to do with with official business. Personally I think this is outrageous as they have to fund hair, make up and clothes out of their own money and are then held up for public ridicule when they make a mistake.

I find some of the comments on this thread about her letting women down by not working extraordinary. She worked very successfully for over 20 years, she has 2 young boys (one of whom with cf possibly requires daily physiotherapy), a husband who travels constantly and works insane hours. She is also involved in a huge number of charities. Cherie worked and that was great, Sarah has exercised a different choice and it's really depressing that people would criticise her for this given her circumstances. Quite amazing that people don't seem to think her boys should be entitled to have at least one parent around.

KristinaM · 03/04/2009 09:41

Good post reach4sky.

sarah looks EXACTLY like an average middle class middle aged British woman who has had 3 children. I object to this supposed consensus that we should all look like the daily mail's idea of an attractive woman - stick thin with fake norks.

i think the Op is very misogynistic

georgiemum · 03/04/2009 09:43

But does it matter what she wears ? She is a brainy lady and comes across are very nice. I like her,

I do think she suits trousers more than skirts though.

Piescesmoon, that's true, T&S bleat on and on about the extra confidence a well-cut jacket can give you, but a lot of people who are quite confident in their field, and sure of their own personality and who basically already like themselves don't need any armour (such as a cute Jigsaw cardigan).

I'm definitely not advocating wearing a tracksuit and a pineapple (lol) to the G20, but in this day and age, refusing a makeover shows confidence, not lack of confidence.

So you she could look better, well, so could we all. And it would change what precisely if she did look a bit better? There'd still be criticism when she got it 'wrong' as the comments about MO's cardi prove!!

ItsMargotBeauregarde · 03/04/2009 11:11

Reach4thesky, I think about 85% of these posts are defending her.. (TG) I'd despair if it were the other way 'round.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 03/04/2009 11:12

I am clearly the only one who couldn't give a fuck about Sarah Brown or any of the other political WAGs.

TotalChaos · 03/04/2009 11:15

Have I stumbled into Heat magazine instead of Mumsnet?

I think this is possibly one of the most horrible threads I've ever read on MN after 7 years... saved only by the counterarguments by the vast majority who are railing against the nasty nasty playground bitchiness and one-upmanship that is being displayed by people who should but clearly don't know any better.

It's been really really depressing reading some of these comments, even if they are in the minority.

I'm so glad that newspaper like the DM are dying.

Yeah, that is good. It's just the other comments that have upset me. I need to imagine all the posters in one big room woth the 2 or 3 voices that are slagging off SB being drowned out by the 100 or so others so I can get a bit of perspective!
