Shallow I know, but Sarah Brown has appalling dress sense and a terrible figure.

FGS woman, loser a bit of weight and get some nice gear. You're supposed to be representing us.

NotanOtter · 02/04/2009 21:46

Spero Emmelines clothes probably fitted

You continue in your sackcloth then - that is fine

I am a feminist - am I not allowed on the style threads?

moondog · 02/04/2009 21:46

Spero, definition of 'viseral'

'characterized by or proceeding from instinct rather than intellect: a visceral reaction.'

I do think it's out of order to criticise the appearance and dress sense of a woman who has not offered herself up for judgement on those measures; ie, not a model, not in the entertainment industry, not a wag!!!

She is, when compared to the average woman, attractive and slim. I bet if she read this thread she'd weep, but not cos she's hurt, because of the number of intelligent women who still can't bite back the urge to trash a politician's wife's appearance.

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2009 21:47

sarah brown is very pretty, she was much thinner when she met GB. he's a fox, imo, very ggggggrrrr.
i think this is quite a shitty OP, tbh, i really don't want to be part of making another woman feel absolutely ghastly about herself just cos she's not a twig. but that IS NOT a good suit. i'm rather surprised she doesn't have a personal shopper. in a way it makes me like her more, actually, suggests strength of character not to be seduced by all that gubbins.

PS i can confirm that habbibu is a beauty.

moondog · 02/04/2009 21:48

NaO,you see exactly what i am driving at.

How utterly hilarious that you remembered that Donnie.

OP posts:
Spero · 02/04/2009 21:48

NotanOtter, I will assume you are willfully missing the point, otherwise I am surprised you have sufficient intelligence to switch your computer on.

Of course it is perfectly fine to care about your appearance. But earlier you criticised the way teenage girls present themselves on Bebo. Why do you think they feel the need to do this? Take a look at the media coverage of the G20 summit, browse awhile amongst Anna's musical prose and hopefully you will shudder.

NotanOtter · 02/04/2009 21:49

so posters not think that we also comment on males appearance too?

we comment on gordon - why not Sarah?

Spero · 02/04/2009 21:49

Moondog, I thought the viscera were the intestines. I thought it was a rather more violent reaction than you describe.

moondog · 02/04/2009 21:50

'do think it's out of order to criticise the appearance and dress sense of a woman who has not offered herself up for judgement on those measures; ie, not a model, not in the entertainment industry, not a wag!!!'

Er...but she has.By marrying a politician and agreeing to be complicit in th whole show (and politics is mainly showbusiness, at least the sort we have seen in London)

OP posts:
Spero · 02/04/2009 21:50

But comments about Gordon are not restricted to his clothes!!! I have yet to read an article about Barack Obama which fussed over the stripe on his tie or whether or not he took his jacket off...

donnie · 02/04/2009 21:51

so moondog - what do you look like then?

moondog · 02/04/2009 21:52

Spero, yes, but this is in slightly different sense.Of or pertaining to the guts (ie instinctive) rather than gut wrenching (although I have seen some shocking outfits in the last few weeks at work that have had that effect on me).

OP posts:
NotanOtter · 02/04/2009 21:53

No i dont Spero and I do have a teenage daughter

Annas post does not make the feminist in me shudder

an awful lot on these boards does

I feel it is hypocritical of many posters to make out that a style comment is indeed a misogynistic comment

Badly worded and a bit strong but please!

moondog · 02/04/2009 21:53

What's that got to do with anything Donnie?

If you need to know though I'm 5 foot 7, size 12, mid length brown hair, bit of a hippy.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2009 21:54

do you think, moony? i really don't. she's not a WAG, she's the wife of a polly. a particularly dour and un-showbizzy one, as it happens, which is why blair was pm for so long. i swear to you, i really do not consider that she represents us. surely her pretty terrified stare and clear discomfort suggests that she did not go willingly into the front of house role.

NAO the OP was hardly a style comment...

NotanOtter · 02/04/2009 21:56

Spero

moondog is the op and she sees that i am grasping the point not 'willfully missing' it

maybe it is yourself who should be 'surprised you have sufficient intelligence to switch your computer on.'

no need to patronise

blouseenthusiast · 02/04/2009 21:57

When my sister met Sarah B, she said she was nice and normal and a bit tired and dressed like a normal person.
This thread is wank.

donnie · 02/04/2009 21:57

well I was vaguely curious, since the title of the thread is about someone's 'appalling dress sense and terrible figure'. I just made me wonder whether you saw yourself as some lush beauty or something. Someone for for all of us women to aspire to, you know.

NotanOtter · 02/04/2009 21:57

whatever happened to a sense of humour?

By marrying a politician you agree to take part in the show.So if you do, surely you then need to do it as well as you can. That doesn't have to mean being flash or spending ££££££££.

Just about a nice well fitting dress and a decent pair of knickers.

I know that I take people who look smart at work much more seriously than those who aren't (prtic. if working with the public)

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2009 21:59

och no, it's not a funny OP, definitely not.

muffle · 02/04/2009 22:00

I think Gordon like Sarah is an attractive person, partly because of his warmth and intelligence, who doesn't really do fashion and looking cool. In that way they're a good match.

Barack Obama by contrast is a natural dresser and just has style and X factor - he would whatever he wore - far more so than Michelle in fact, though she has some beautiful clothes.

Does it matter? - it does affect first impressions, but it doesn't matter. I think most people are capable of seeing the more important qualities in a person, even if we do take an interest in how they look. I also don't feel it's a crime to be interested in clothes. Though moondog I do worry that your OP could be seen by SB and it's not nice.

Re the OP I don't actually feel let down in any way by Sarah Brown as a "representative" of British women. She's intelligent, professional, warm, humane, obviously kind, she seems funny and I would imagine she is a lovely mum.
