Best place to buy an "AMAZING" dress?

geordieminx · 09/02/2009 11:20

Ok so I'm begging and pleading for the help of the fashion experts on here...

I'm looking for a dress to wear at a wedding... mine but not a "wedding dress".

Ceremony in hotel, 40ish people, meal, casino later. Hotel is a Malmaison, so trendy/gothy chic? The room we are getting married in is black and this kinda colour.

I'm 27, short, will hopefully be a size 10 by then, with good boobs (34d), large thighs and wobbly post child tum.

Ideally I was thinking something long, but this isnt set in stone, I open to all suggestions!

I guess I want to look amazing (ha), cool, sexy but not slutty

Any help, links to websites that I may not have looked at would be appreciated loads.

Have a look at the Pronovias website here

They are spanish designers who do the most beautiful dresses.

They have just bought out a collection called Fiesta I think and the dresses are beautiful bright colours and some black but I guarantee that people will be blown over by your dress.

oh it was from the link that madam did on fiesta, black adelaide.

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/02/2009 13:20

Oh boo - my pc won't let me see the pronovias website

Glad you've found some Jim Hjelm stockists. So when are you going ?! We need an update after you've been (with trying on pics if you're up for it ). We can be virtual bridesmaids

I remember seeing adult bridesmaids in black cocktail dresses with the mango calla lillies in a wedding magazine ages ago and thinking it looked totally stunning. I was tempted for my wedding but black drains me and I really wanted "christmassy". Maybe for my next one

geordieminx · 10/02/2009 14:06

Just remembered that a good friend works at a bridal shop, they stock angel and dessy dresses so am off to have a look at them.

Popped into a bridal shop this afternoon, they had a few bridesmaids dresses but they looked like they were IYKWIM? They were all funny fabric, and the same strapless a line design - not nice....

They did however have some antique lace dresses - 1 was gold, and kinda halterneck but almost like a polo neck collar if that makes sense? Reduced from £1200 to £400

I reckon you're going to end up with a wedding dress ! I was adamant I didn't want a "bridal" gown, but when you start looking, there are some different ones around and you can get some bargains as well.

There are a lot of horrid adult bridesmaid dresses - watters, hjelm and dessy seem to be the best ones for more "bridal" ones.

The pronovias ones are gorgeous love amaral in a different colour stunning

geordieminx · 10/02/2009 14:17

tell me this is horrible please

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 10/02/2009 14:21

hmmmmm - honestly ?

I love the shape of bodice but I'm personally not keen on two tone wedding dresses (i.e bodice one colour, skirt another). I'm not a bit lilac fan either and I'm not massivelt keen on the little flowers. All personal opinion though and its nowhere near horrible

geordieminx · 10/02/2009 14:27

Thats good enough for me - I think it probably looks a lot better in the pics than it would in RL, and would probably look washed out and faded. Plus I dont suit lilac

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 10/02/2009 14:30

It was the boob flashing you were keen on wasn't it ?!

geordieminx · 10/02/2009 14:43

Nah my mum reckons the only person that hasnt seen them is Stevie Wonder

songbird, just saw your other post about the knitted dress - can't believe yours shrunk - mine has been ok. Has it shrunk a lot?
I followed instructions and just did it on a hand wash wool and its ok!

sorry for hijack!

SongBirdOfPrey · 11/02/2009 11:01

trifictits i did it in the wash at 35 then put it on the radiator to dry! think that was what shrunk it.
even dh goes when i wear it, oh thats bit short.

the grey ones ok though just the wine one.

geordie how you doing today?
i think you should try on a dress in every shap e

geordieminx · 11/02/2009 11:27

Morning all!

Its all a bit daunting really - I mean, there is quite a bit of time til then, do I look and try on loads and leave it til a few months before, but then what happens if I dont find anything as nice as the first dress I tried on that I cant get? Will there be more/less choice at the end of the summer? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

At the moment I'm waiting on the woman from the hotel getting back to me - we met at the weekend, she gave me a list of dates, after discussion we have decided on a different date so I emailed her on Monday morning to ask about date, and a couple of other things, havent heard back . I presumed that if she was at work at the weekend then she might have mon/tues off but its WEDNESDAY now, I need to have it confirmed. I dont want to phone her incase she thinks I'm being a pain.

OMG I'm turning into Bridezilla.....

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 11/02/2009 13:16

Its not bridezilla ish - honestly - you need to get these things sorted. Was it a direct email address or just an info@ type thing ? If the latter, give her a call and just say you wanted to check she had the email (or even if it isn't, say your pc is playing up and you weren't sure whether she got it)

In terms of dresses, I reckon it depends on what you're going to go for. If its a bridesmaid dress, they can take up to 14 weeks to be made, so the sooner the better really. Most designers have a spring and autumn collection so the spring will already be out and you'll be too late for autumn 09 so all the potentials will already be out there iyswim. If you end up with a bridal dress, they take even longer

geordieminx · 11/02/2009 15:33

No, unfortunately it was an email to her directly. I rang before lunch, she was in a meeting, so I left a message, but still not heard anything.

I just dont want to tell anyone in RL until its booked IYKWIM?

notyummy · 11/02/2009 15:36

I have stayed at the Glasgow Malmaison and it twas fab - I am sure you will have a great day.

notyummy · 11/02/2009 15:39

Some of those pronovias dress are GORGEOUS tilly. I lurve the 'modelo Alice' one. Have a few balls to go, but cannot justify yet another long dress!

Anyway....sorry for the hijack. Hope you find the perfect dress soon!
