i often wear jeans and trainers, today ive got like a swing double button cardi thing on too.

but i fancy getting a bit more dressed up
what do you think, would it look silly?

what sort of things could i go for that are a bit more dressy but in a causualish way?

hope you know what i mean?

Woollen dresses and boots are my current fave, very comfy.

mazzystartled · 03/01/2009 17:11

oh yes me too

it's taken me 4 and half years of sahming [well 80% of the time] to get out of my work clothes mode, and i have taken casual too far for my liking.

i am quite liking wide trousers, little tops and knitwear and chunky jewellery atm. but need some new direction.

dexter73 · 03/01/2009 17:12

I like to wear trousers instead of jeans. Today I am wearing these trousers with a fitted green jumper and a long chunky silver necklace. It's still very comfortable but just a bit smarter than jeans.

mustrunmore · 03/01/2009 17:12

When I'm not in pe kit, I live in jeans. But I always wear heels with them, and usually a collarless blouse wih lots of buttons and detail. Now its freezing, I've got a couple of jumper things, but still quite thin (not chunky knit), with little buttons. Got a nice one from Bay Trading with an integral belt with fancy round buckle.

Tigerschick · 03/01/2009 17:14

I tend to wear jeans, but I wear 'nice' jumpers with them so they don't feel overly casual.
I say, if you're comfortable, go for it.

LaTrucha · 03/01/2009 17:16

I often wear a skirt in this sort of style with a slim jumper.

SilentTerror · 03/01/2009 17:17

I like jeans tucked into boots with layered tops and long waistcoat or cardigan,or wide legged jeans or woollen trousers with shorter knits.
I love a White Stuff knitted dress/long top worn with thick tights and boots or over jeans,or another sweater dress with boots.
I always wear make up and jewellery, usually chunky necklace.

LoveMyLapTop · 03/01/2009 17:19

Denim short skirt
opaque tihghts
biker boots
balck polo
chunky grey knitted waist coat
beads
my fave outfit!

lovelysongbirdie · 03/01/2009 17:24

yes i have two knitted dresses i like to wear with opaque tights and boots although i have shrunk one of them a bit so now its a bit tight and short

I can't really wear boots so what would you suggest with skirts?

LaTrucha · 03/01/2009 17:57

Ballet pump type shoes.

leoleosuperstar · 03/01/2009 18:01

Would that make me look too short? My sister always tells me off for wearing flats with skirts but I don't know what the other option would be and still have a daytime look.

lovelysongbirdie · 03/01/2009 18:29

leo how tall are you?

OP posts:
TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 03/01/2009 19:28

leoleosuperstar.....why no boots? I only ask because I thought for years my cankles would prevent boot wearage but have in the last 3 years realised boots are my friends in this regard.........and now own 4 pairs of different shapes and sizes! But I also wear ballet pumps (which is probably a no-no with cankles but life is too short to worry too much).

I have been a SAHM for 8 years. To begin with, the relief of not getting dressed up for work was lovely but I soon began to feel a bit bleurgh. I had a wardrobe full of clothes deemed too smart for my day to day life. So I decided "sod it" and now wear pretty much whatever. Dresses, skirts and tops, biker boots, smart boots, boyfriend style trousers (as opposed to jeans but basically worn with same kind of tops - just feel a bit smarter). I would also say that (to quote Patsy) you can never have too many accessories! Buy belts, cheap jewellery from Top Shop etc to jazz up an outfit. Also, if you want cashmere then get it from Tesco or similar - don't pay a fortune in Joseph. Obviously if something is dry clean only I don't wear it whilst doing painting with the kids but I do feel making an effort makes me feel more confident.

MrsTittleMouse · 03/01/2009 19:33

To those that wear woollen dresses - how old are your DC? I ask because I have a 3 month old and a 2 year old and I regularly get thrown up on, or have sticky/crumby/greasy fingers wiped into my clothes, or have to grub around on the floor playing games. So anything that I wear would have to deal with a lot of knee area scuffing and an awful lot of washing (i.e. jeans on bottom, T-shirts on top). I'm guessing that woollen dresses wouldn't work. How old do they have to be before I don't have to dress for heavy damage? Or will I be back in work by then?

LoveMyLapTop · 03/01/2009 19:42

MRS JS - I am a fellow cankler, I have now come to terms with it and wear what ever!

lovelysongbirdie · 03/01/2009 20:01

oh dear mrsmouse. personally i think i would find it too tricky trying to wear woolen dress with a 3 month old, as they get the wool in there mouths.
how about when the bby is crawling/walking?
how is the baby doing btw?and yourself?

I have been a SAHM for 1 year and I actually kind of have a kind of uniform:

3 pairs skinny jeans - 2 black 1 indigo
1 pair bootcut jeans to wear with heeled shoes, round toed not pointy and not high (ok for buggy pushing if not raining)

2 jersey dresses to be worn with opaques (grey or purple) or, over skinny jeans with riding boots (excellent for rainy weather and walking with buggy)

quite a few basic long sleeved t- shirts with a low flattering neckline for layering

Chiffon floaty tops (usually from Zara) for layering over long sleeved t shirts (in silk of pos - just wash and go no need to iron and patterned as hides stains better )

Funky short sleeved tops like
this to be worn alone in summer, layered in winter.

Always wear decent makeup, always wear earrings/necklace.

Oh, and a good coat. And I will often wear jeans/tops with a fitted tuxedo jacket, big scarf etc... if it is milder weather.

Do not be afraid to look nice! I see so many dowdy mums who give me a "who does she think she is?" look and I think

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 03/01/2009 20:12

I have got into wideleg trousers or demin mini skirt or wideleg jeans.
with cotton V neck t/shirt (long or short sleeved) and soft floppy knits to go over.
Black knee lenghth boots
Black heeled ankle boots
brown loafers
pale blue trainers

I tend to wear alot of dresses in the summer but can't seem to find winter dresses that cope with a rather wobbly tummy.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/01/2009 20:16

jersey dresses or skirts and jumpers, thick tights in winter bare legs in summer. Easy as hell and easy to dress up or down with heels or flats, a nice coat etc.

I find jeans too uncomfortable to wear around the house but sometimes wear them.

Jewelsandgems where do you live?

I just nosied at your profile and I am sure I know you from somewhere.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 03/01/2009 20:58

lovemylaptop - its great to hear a fellow cankler not give a toss too!

I spent my youth wondering if I could (seriously) have plastic surgery to reduce cankles

I've come to realise we all have our cross to bear and the woman with the slim ankles may not have such a pretty smile

SilentTerror · 03/01/2009 23:06

That sounds very lke my sort of style,Jewls, but I only have one pair of skinny jeans, the rest are wide leg which I wear with Clarks wedges if they require a heel, flat boots or ballet flats if not.
Have just got into leggings, and am quite taken at t he moment,I must say.Very easy, look very modern with boots and layers.

leoleosuperstar · 03/01/2009 23:34

Fat knees! Looks silly at the tops of the boots .
