Hello everyone, old and new.

This is about feeling better about yourself and looking and feeling better etc. But mainly we chat and laugh quite a lot, which has all got to help towards happiness etc.

The rules (anyone can join):

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine or Champagne or whatever at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

Some people are doing India and Neris's Idiot Proof Diet (Atkins, more or less), others are doing Slimy World, others are just being as healthy as possible.

Welcome everyone, have a good week.

Oh well, neither is being fat so there you go.

you know, I didn't actually ASK for any opinions on my diet or if I did, I don't remember doing so.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 23/09/2008 10:22

And do you know what, when I say cambozola, I am talking a mini matchbox sized piece. When I say chorizo I am talking 3 slices, the size of a 20p piece. When I say sausages I am talking 98% pork meat, which is NOT BAD FOR YOU.

OP posts:
bundle · 23/09/2008 10:24

but as a % of a diet wrt to meat, dairy etc, I do think it's important to look at what's going on inside too (that's diets in general, www, not picking on you )

Marina · 23/09/2008 12:27

Morning all, I had a medium to poor boot camp yesterday due to too much work but today is going better with a quick power walk into the office this morning.
Still catching up on sleep and happiness dented slightly by ds being a bit of a nong about school. In his case I know it is wilful, bit like picking a sore spot, and also fundamentally unnecessary as he is bright, but the poor little chap is fairly hard work at the mo
Onward and upward. I had a run-in with a scrumptious Cornish pasty yesterday (damn but it was good and I am sure there was some swede in there Miss Bundle) so it's back to browsing on leaves and twigs today.

bundle · 23/09/2008 13:27

hurrah for swedes!

actually i hate swedes.
i made a delish but totally Bad For You corned beef/new potatoes/leftover veg all in one pan effort last night.

had a run-in with great western trains (virtually kidnapping, including lengthy stint @ bristol parkway aka the Most Depressing Station In The World) - that's my excuse

dh has been asked to be vice chair of the PA. ooer

the cat news (he's got a mahoosive abcess, and not Cat Cancer, as I'd dreaded) has cheered me up he's under sedation being lanced as I type...

Marina · 23/09/2008 13:32

Oh, speedy recovery for your cat I hope bundy
I like swede which is just as well as dh has made an enormous vat of healthful root veg and beef stew for tonight

WideWebWitch · 23/09/2008 13:49

sorry about your cat Bundle and sorry also for being snippy earlier. I am worried about, variously: (all feel free to dump your worries on this thread too)

  • no contract beyond end Oct
  • PILS moving to be near us, I am trying to find out about social services and stuff and it's making me worry. I don't quite know where tfkingf we're going to find the TIME to help them either.
  • Ds and the 11+, which he takes NEXT week. He's done 2 practice tests at home this week and failed them both. So special measures school it will be if he does as if I have no job then we can't pay
  • dh on gruelling course again next week so I have to do everythign and it will be horrible. He has to leave early AND do homework every night. So what with him and ds next week is going to be a shocker

that's enough to be getting on with I think.
Apologies, anyway.

Anyway, I go home in 2.5 hours so it could be worse and am working at home tomorrow.

Marina, yum at pasty. My dad was Cornish and his sisters used to make the most amazing pasties.

foothesnoo · 23/09/2008 13:59

Just had soup and wheat free bread - had a good day yesterday culminating in aubergine and tomato curry cooked by lovely DH, eating whilst watching the gorgeous John Stewart on tv.

Love the word nong Marina - v descriptive in a 8-9 year old boy way.

WWW sympathies re worries. I think sometimes it helps to scope them a bit - ie Aged Ps, get onto Age concern and star thinking about what support you can put in place for them. DS - well, you've done your best, you can't sit the exam for him and hopefully he will raise his game on the day (I was a bit like that, still am a last minute Minnie).

Swedes = cattle food IMO, even in a cornish pasty.

feetheart · 23/09/2008 14:09

Have just spent AGES catching up and will now manage to forget everything and ramble on about me instead

L&S - glad things seem to be working themselves out slowly. I agree with others that the 'thinking about things' time is usually much worse than actually doing it. Nursery sounds lovely BTW, I'm a HUGE believer in gut feelings. Hope this week goes as well as can be expected.

YoYo - huge relief all round I'm sure

Marina - LOL about living in wheelie bin, can I come too as house seems to have been attacked by huge Mess Pixies since we have been away.

Sorry to hear about worries all round on the job front, managed to miss all the madness as have just got back from camping in a field outside Bristol, couldn't have picking a better week if we'd tried
Failed in every respect on Bootcamp whilst away apart from happiness which is pinging off the scale

bundle · 23/09/2008 14:09

no need to apologise www, offload-away

glad you're working at home tomorrow, that should take some pressure off.

good luck to ds!

Computer going a bit bonkers so long rambling post very much shortened, probably to great relief all round.
Off to beat house into submission whilst DS has his first nap in months - started pre-school yesterday and FAR too many late nights whilst camping have taken their toll.

bundle · 23/09/2008 16:23

snigger batters

that secondary thing is sooooo stress-free, no?

moondog · 23/09/2008 18:04

sorry www just interested
didn't mean to be rude
don't know of this diet you speak of

JJ · 23/09/2008 19:29

[guffaw] at batters.

bundle, have you read Gary Taubes book at all? Here's an interview with him. The interview has some extremely weak points; I think the book is narrower in scope and extremely well researched. (I still have not finished it.)

My grand theory in a nutshell is that different things work for different people (within reason / caveats apply / blah blah blah). I know that's important to everyone ( at own pompousness). However, I think my lunch was unhealthy by anyone's standards: two pieces of birthday cake.

Stress sky-high again/ still as I forgot about needing to pay deposit for braces (my eldest got braces today!) and slightly panicked today when reminded. And general economic uncertainty, bleh.

I have chilled a bit on secondary schools, although think that's because everything else is so stressful. There's a lovely school that my son's friends attend and he would most likely get into. We'll see.

And I like swedes. Not sure what you lot have against them. Harrumph.

moonshine · 23/09/2008 19:40

Hello all - I too am going to copy Batters as ever and catch up later (but will leave the intelligent and well thought out post in her much more capable hands), just wanted to mark the thread.

And to say that I am rather scared at being confused with Moondog by WWW - she is far too scary and a diet rottweiler. I am a labrador when it comes to food issues. It does sound like a horrendous week WWW but tis only a few days, so grit your teeth and you will get through it.

Must go do tedious motherly duties and will read thread properly.

tigermoth · 23/09/2008 19:41

Batters, hello - so how was the walk? Did I miss you mentioning it or are you keeping mum about it?

www, fingers crossed next week is less stressful than you predict - at least you have low expectations of it, so any relief will be a bonus.

Marina, I see secondary school stress is already casting its long shadow. But cannot imagine your lovely ds being unlovely. I am off to an open day tomorrow, first of the season (sigh) - the one you recommended.

Hello everyone else! must dash

Marina · 23/09/2008 19:43

Good luck tm, and batters - back later everyone else, kids to scold, husbands to upbraid, cabbage to reduce to mush...

Cammelia · 23/09/2008 20:33

Good Evening everyone.

My news? I have given in notice for my p/time job that I have had for past 3 years.

I need that time back for so many things, not least to be able to supervise dd with gigantic amounts of h/work over the next 2 years; to be able properly exercise again; clean my house properly, etc etc.

Am looking forward to going out for dinner with A on Thursday night (one of dd's godmothers who Marina and Batters and Tigermoth may remember meeting at mumnet first ever meetup)

WideWebWitch · 23/09/2008 21:15

Hello

Sorry to Moonshine for confusing you with Moondog, I did think 'eh, Moonshine KNOWS I am doing IandN' but fired away anyway with my stroppy missive

moondog, I am sorry for barking. And Moonshine, since I actually directed it at you although Moondog was the poster. Oh god, sorry, everyone. I was being stroppy and snippy and I am sorry.

JJ, sympathy on braces and economic climate. Sympathy to everyone on the latter, actually.

Batters, welcome back! We missed you.

Tigermoth, hope your eve went well.

Cam at giving up pt job

wb feetheart, camping, eww but hope you enjoyed Bristol. Or the field outside it!

Foo, thanks for those wise words. Just finally admitted to dh how stressed I am about it and he said "it'll be fine, I can do most of it" so I am going to try to stop worrying and let what will be, be.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 23/09/2008 21:17

Just cried and cried on dh about everything: work; pils moving here; 11+; ds, who was VILE to me tonight and shouted at me loads because I dared to ask him to do his homework. DD was also a screaming madam about going to bed. God, I am so so fed up of it all.

I have succumbed to wine but will probably be in bed by half ten.

OP posts:
Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/09/2008 21:41

Aaaww www. Sorry things are getting on top of you. Get yourself to bed - you sound tired and things always seem worse when you're tired

JJ - sympathy on the braces. Hope things are not too sore this evening. dd has been rid of hers for about 6 months now (well apart from the night-time retainer) and has lovely teeth. And we didn't have to pay.

Enjoy your time at home Cam.

Lol at the moonshine/moondog confusion. She's a pussycat really. Arf!

Secondary schools - all will be well. Breathe people!

Marina · 23/09/2008 21:49

oh, www - I've got tears in my eyes reading how down you sound just now
It's all a bit Sysiphean isn't. You roll a damn great boulder up the hill all day and down it crashes again in the night, ready for another day of hard labour
I am currently juggling Sunday School, Latin Club, full-time work, currently going through a "come on then, prove your worth" phase, ds who is literally tormenting himself about school before he is even in Year Bloody Six, looking like a granny, feeling like a granny, having to haul gloomy dh through life's little setbacks, worries about aged ps, fretting about not keeping up with some friends enough and a house that really is a Slum. Mess Pixies? Mess Warthogs more like
Being able to give up work is a plus , you go, Cam - and raise a glass to A from us, ah yes, I remember her well!
Glad you had such a fab time feetheart - of all the weeks to pick for camping, you really did luck out!
I have eaten a muffin and crisps today. I am not proud. And I have a stinktastic cold (no braces though). I suppose at least I don't have an abscess on my head or a giant vet's bill, hope kitty is better bundle.
Foo speaketh truth re last minute minnies - I was one too www. Hope the rest of your evening is a bit less monstrous

tortoiseshell · 23/09/2008 21:57

Hello all, am shamefacedly hiding from the thread, but had to pop on tonight - www, I'm so sorry you're feeling so down, judging from some of my friends, Y6 is the MOST stressful time for parents, with the whole school thing. I am ALREADY scared stiff about when ds1 gets there, and he is only Y3. Nothing helpful to say, except that my stressed friends have got through it, and you will too - and hopefully after the 11+ is over, whatever the result, you can all relax a bit. Am I right in thinking your ds has a tutor? Has he got some useful 'passing the exam last minute tips' - things like reading the question, finding the 'important' bit of the question (eg not spending all the time on the extraneous bit worth 1 mark etc) - checking over the paper at the end.

It's rubbish isn't it, education - it shouldn't BE this stressful - the kids should just have a good local secondary school to go to. Our local one gets 23% of the pupils 5 GCSEs. And the police are in EVERY week to deal with pupil issues. There is just no way my kids are going there, but we can't pay for ALL of them - maybe one. I am just banking on the CE school across town, or for my kids to be complete geniuses and win academic and music scholarships, but that I fear may be a bit optimistic...

www - I really hope things go well in the 11+ - and that your other worries resolve. Enjoy the time off whatever happens with jobs. xxxxx

bundle · 23/09/2008 22:08

he's much better thanks marina, though scowling @ me from inside his vet special collar. there's lots of blood and I'm too scared to take off the collar tonight so fed him wet food (big treat) off a saucer

www sorry you're so low, really
