Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

It is very different to years ago.

I work at an entertainment venue, I was working the D Block Europe event earlier this week.

I would say 70 percent of women were wearing what were indecent length skirts .skirts where when they walked you could see underwear.

There were two girls aged around 17 wearing frilly knickers and crop tops. As they walked up the escalators I could see the lips of their vaginas.

Women wearing g strings in sheer trousers full on butt cheeks on show

women with nipples popping out of tops .

A generation of women convinced to dress like hookers .

mind blowing

This is absolutely horrendous

You can be extremely sexy without being trashy.Im happy my son brought home the former. If he brought home a girl with her boobs & bum out I would question his taste but knowing him this would be an absolute no.

Yes, you can be sexy without being trashy. But some people are trashy. They were in the 1960s, they were when I was going out in the early 2000s, and they are today.

Would you welcome a woman in a burka?

Genuine question: what on earth constitutes worse?

I want to know as well!

It’s a form of gas lighting to suggest that those of us who remember being teenagers somehow forget what we and our friends were wearing. When I was a teen it was the era of Wham moving into Beastie Boys moving into indie and grunge. So pencil skirts and oversized tops, shell suits, then a sort of goth aesthetic where a short skirt was married with tights and big boots. What wasn’t standard was no tights and a skirt that didn’t cover the buttocks. I never saw that.

You know it's noone else's business, but have made it yours, and are now trying to make it everyone else's. Have a day off.

Get real! We all discuss each other's business. Have a day on.

I'm pretty sure that Sunday afternoon posts about how awful girls look wearing too little/covering up/being overweight are usually located in AIBU.

I’m guessing worse is the Jordan/Jodie Marsh vibe where they routinely went out with a belt covering the nips.

Idayatatime · Yesterday 17:46

Let's face it the idea of young girls going on with their bums & cleavage on show is 💯 not in any way shape or form acceptable.

Offensive? I just find it funny. I mean, fashion eh? They just look like a twonk but I'd never find that offensive.

You don’t find it offensive that you can see a strangers skid marked underwear? I’d rather that was covered by another layer of fabric 🤮

Nah im rhe same era and rara skirts were all the rage, which were short short, and crop tops to go with them, jeans were low so,low slung that thongs were visible

it’s gaslighting to tell us that wasn’t the case.

Fashion designers who flaunt this idea should be ashamed of themselves

That's just not true.

Thirty years ago was 1996 - all those things were firmly in place.

But nothing else has changed.Women still do all the shitwork in society and in families. Porn, including violent porn, is everywhere and impacts how men think of women (and how women think of themselves) as fundamentally sexualised and existing for men's gaze and convenience.

Rape, looking at the conviction rates, is basically legal.

We've won nothing other than lip service in three decades, and in many respects things have gone backwards.

To add - views like yours happen because it's in the nature of power structures like patriarchy to 'give in' to some pitiful and basically meaningless demands in order to keep the real power.

They make concessions to bring liberal feminists onto their side. They push meaningless 'wins' and try to redraw the lines of what equality means, such that 'progressive' social wins are seen as actual, practical equality. Which in the case of real feminism, would basically bring the existing order to it's knees. Imagine if women stopped doing the family shitwork, for example.

So they make concessions in order to stave off revolution - but also to co-opt some of the easily-won, hard of thinking oppressed group to fight for them - precisely as you are doing.

Sorry for the hard of thinking bit, I know it sounds rude. But honestly, the older I get, the more it's clear to me that the absence of critical analysis caused by a socialised desire to 'not make a fuss', or to pat ourselves on the back for our 'achievements', is what is being deployed by all the dominant ideologies rn.

Eh? Women have been displaying their cleavage for hundreds of years. If you have particularly large breasts it’s hard not to sometimes.

TheFriendlyCabbage · Yesterday 17:50

People like to sound cool and edgy on here so you are going to get push back. I don’t want to see anybody’s arse crack when I go out - be that a young girl, a youth jailing or a builder with a crack big enough to park your bike. It’s rank. And people do judge, we all do, irrespective of how much we say otherwise. Young girl, a bit of a slapper putting everything out on show, sitting down on seats others use. Young bloke, pretending he has just emerged out of the state penitentiary after a session on the chain gang looking quite literally like an arse. Careless and ick inducing builder wearing too loose trousers or no belt letting his colleagues get up close and personal with something they don’t want to be up close and personal to.

It might be fashion, it might be accidental - either way, it’s grim. But this is Mumsnet. So, be kind, don’t judge.

Exactly, Egyptian gowns and European court dresses in rhe 18th century had highly exposed breasts,

Says who?

You don't get to dictate what is or isn't acceptable for other women to wear. Your personal opinion doesn't make it a universal rule all must follow 😂

Your repeated focus on policing young women's bodies/outfits, combined with your other comments, says far more about your own misogynistic attitudes than it does about the women you're so obviously so quick to judge.

Edited

Nonsense. I had a Ra Ra skirt and it absolutely was not so short that is showed the buttocks. I’ve just googled 1980s Ra Ra skirt historical images and it backs up my memory.

I think this thread is full of mothers of teenage girls that are trying REALLY hard to justify their cool mum approach to teenage fashion. I always ponder what loons are paying for their girls’ school shirts to be tailored shorter and I think they’re in this thread 🤣

I think we all get it isn’t acceptable to you. But as you’re not queen of the world, no one really gives a shit, certainly not the young women you’re making disdainful , mysogynistic remarks about,

and whilst I’m here, yoh comment the women were attractive in your op. What’s that got to do with it, why did you feel the need to call that out. Is it jealousy ans insecurity?
