What age to like this?

How old would someone be to like this handbag?

I ask because I bought it as a gift for a friend and someone else has said it's too old/young for them (don't want to say which so don't prejudice any answers!)

What age to like this?

I think it’s probably more about the person’s style and tastes rather than age.

EppingIsFun · 26/10/2026 21:41

I'm 41 and I love it.

Why would the people in your life see you as a little old lady, do they behave like that?

No they don’t (wouldn’t dare!) but based on what people very blatantly state on here about anyone over 50 being past it, it makes you wonder if that’s a common view out there in the wild.

Shinyhappyapple · 26/10/2026 22:03

Well to me, the yellow V on the front looks like the kind of thing a cartoon superhero would have on their chest! Sorry OP as I see you bought it for a friend, but I think they were probably trying to find a polite way of saying they didn’t like it.

I’m 59 and I can’t imagine I would’ve liked it at any age beyond 11. Sorry op. Glad you didn’t spend loads on it she you can be honest with each other. That sounds like a great friendship to me.

I do agree about the terrible ageism on mn. It worries me that people in my life see me as a little old lady, completely out of touch when in fact I’m a reasonably stylish, energetic, interested, gym-going, travel loving business woman. Not part of done beige homogenous mass.

People generally age differently today especially if they are fit & healthy. I have memories of working as a nanny for a year when I was 18 & before I went to uni. Looking back I remember looking at my immaculate employer & thinking I will never wear jeans when I'm as old as that. She was 33 😂

milkysmum · 26/10/2026 22:05

Maybe mid 50s early 60s

Shinyhappyapple · 26/10/2026 22:11

People saying the style looks 1980s, I think it may be more 1960s or 70s.

Shinyhappyapple · 26/10/2026 22:12

Are you that age and you like it ? As I am, and I don’t!

ForFairOchreOtter · 26/10/2026 22:14

I hate people buying me bags. Dont associate bags with age

hiyathere1235 · 26/10/2026 22:15

80?

Kylie Minogue is in this age group & I'm sure according to many posters she'd love it😂

I wouldn't worry. They all think they look 30 and very stylish and current on here. In reality, they all dress in jeans and a jumper, possibly from Tesco, with whatever trainers they think are fashionable, and a mousey pageboy bob.

The evidence is when they fall over themselves to post the absolute boring clothes ever when someone asks for a dress for an occasion, and when they sneer that someone will look like a tourist or tunnel and bridge if they dare to want to dress up in London. It's all very casual, hence the boring jeans and tesco jumper.

Not for me. It looks like an old lady bag.

Well this old lady wouldn’t want it.

iamnotalemon · Yesterday 02:21

Kind of makes me think of the Jamaican 🇯🇲 flag and does look a bit retro.

I don’t own any jeans I’m afraid. Neither am I a devotee of Cos. I’m a s&b outlier I think 😬

Currently, I don't like handbags. I think they look fussy/frumpy on me, so I wouldn't use it. That said, I love this one v much. It's not my style, but if my friend had it I would be straight in with the compliments.

I'm mid 50s

Wow, so many replies, thank you.

It was from a charity shop so not expensive (we have a deal, thats where we buy all our presents for each other, £5 max. The laughter that some gifts have caused is often better than the gifts themselves) I bought it as she has a yellow and blue coat and thought it would match!

Reading your replies, I think the comment about it being too old for her was actually a nice way of saying 'its bloody hideous' 😂

I will give it to her as we're always honest if we don't like things and see what she thinks and report back.

Oh I'm certain it was although I'm less sure why you think it's a nice way of saying it.

Anyways I think your friend would feel very much at home on Style and Beauty where posters regularly describe clothes as suitable for old women when what they really mean is hideous. It's much more rare though to see anyone admitting to it so for your honestly, I thank you.

It has a slightly retro 70s/80s look to it, actually, so I can imagine it really appealing to someone over 50.

It's also a 'proper handbag', so might not appeal to younger women, who may well prefer a small rucksack or cross body bag.

I like it, actually.

I think anyone who is going for the 70s/ 80s vibe regardless of age.

BusterGonad · Yesterday 08:10

I don't think it's an old or young thing, it just looks a bit cheap. A bit flat and sad.

I love this! If your friend is the sort of person who would wear a blue and yellow coat, then she probably would like this bag! And if it is a charity shop fail, she can just take it straight back to the charity shop and consider that her gift was a donation to the charity!

ResearchMuseum · Yesterday 08:26

I think it has a retro/Star Trek vibe. So it’s a matter of taste. On the right person that could look cool. It’s all about the styling.

SilverVixen101 · Yesterday 17:52

I loathe all handbags and always have done. So not for me from age 0 - 58 years.

I'm 60 and I think its ugly.

Gettingolderandgrumpier60 · Yesterday 18:08

Suppose it’s a matter of taste but please define ‘old lady’ as I’m 64 and hate it (sorry!). It’s really antwacky.

Hurryuphumphreygeorgeiswaiting · Yesterday 18:21

I love the bag OP. I like anything vintage and 1970's. Always have and I am mid-fifties. If your friend doesnt like it, I would buy if off you. 😁
