What age to like this?

How old would someone be to like this handbag?

I ask because I bought it as a gift for a friend and someone else has said it's too old/young for them (don't want to say which so don't prejudice any answers!)

What age to like this?

I think it’s a style thing. I think it has a cool retro vibe and with the right clothes would look good. It’s a strong personal statement. I’d use it. I like it.

mysoddenbananabread · 26/10/2026 16:21

At a push it's " mod girl fashion"

What age to like this?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/10/2026 16:22

Nothing to do with age.

I don’t like it at 56, but I wouldn’t have liked it at 26 either.

But you know your friend’s taste, presumably.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/10/2026 16:25

And what the fuck is an old lady bag when it’s at home?

Growlybear83 · 26/10/2026 17:06

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2026 14:28

I agree with this. I'm 62 and I like colourful bags, I always have, but that one's not my style.

Yes, I love bright and colourful bags too. This one would be far too tame for me.

Charlenedickens · 26/10/2026 17:11

Is it new or current op, as I’m afraid I’d assume that was a couple of quid in a charity shop or vinted . If that’s what it is, I’d reconsider gifting it, based in what the other person told you, which I suspect was a kind way of saying it’s bad,

Lomonald · 26/10/2026 17:15

Growlybear83 · 26/10/2026 13:42

I meant to add that I think all bags are pretty much ageless and it’s just a matter of personal taste.

This, really it is basically down if you like it or not.

Fwiw I don't hate it and if I was given it as a gift I would use it, i am in my 50s

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/10/2026 17:34

It looks very dated. Something that would have been ok in the ‘80s. It may appeal to someone who likes quirky clothes but I can’t see anyone who follows current trends liking it.

MyManinCaracas · 26/10/2026 18:13

I’m 58 and think it’s ugly. Do you know the recipient well?

MidnightMeltdown · 26/10/2026 18:21

I think it’s a young persons bag. Older people will remember last time it was in fashion and think dated. Young people will think retro cool.

Blues321 · 26/10/2026 18:26

Wow, so many replies, thank you.

It was from a charity shop so not expensive (we have a deal, thats where we buy all our presents for each other, £5 max. The laughter that some gifts have caused is often better than the gifts themselves) I bought it as she has a yellow and blue coat and thought it would match!

Reading your replies, I think the comment about it being too old for her was actually a nice way of saying 'its bloody hideous' 😂

I will give it to her as we're always honest if we don't like things and see what she thinks and report back.

It isn’t at all fashionable right now. So if you’re into fashion at any age you wouldn’t wear it.

Doesn’t matter your age…

I think you’re right / they were just saying “don’t do it” 🤣

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 26/10/2026 19:05

I’m into vintage and I maybe would have liked it in about 2007 (but I had a thing for vintage “old lady clothes” as my mum put it haha)

Hear, hear. I am so sick of the ageism here.

just because people reach a particular age, they don’t suddenly like the same things.

It does look like a charity shop find, I commented uo thread, there is a trick to shopping in charity shops, and it’s not to buy stuff that looks it,..

Heysham1 · 26/10/2026 19:28

I’m 56 and it’s not for me, I like leather cross over bags. Mum is 93 and likes smaller handbags and my 17 year old daughter wouldn’t care for it either. It’s not a colour or pattern I have seen anyone wearing, but I’m sure it’s not that unusual.

It’s every other bloody thread. Really tedious.

Lisa12345678910 · 26/10/2026 20:04

I love it. It’s great for summer! I am 40 but would love it any time!

BitOutOfPractice · 26/10/2026 20:09

I’m 59 and I can’t imagine I would’ve liked it at any age beyond 11. Sorry op. Glad you didn’t spend loads on it she you can be honest with each other. That sounds like a great friendship to me.

I do agree about the terrible ageism on mn. It worries me that people in my life see me as a little old lady, completely out of touch when in fact I’m a reasonably stylish, energetic, interested, gym-going, travel loving business woman. Not part of done beige homogenous mass.

Sugarleaf · 26/10/2026 20:13

I’m 50 and I think it’s really really ugly. Age isn’t anything to do with taste

Autumnishere1 · 26/10/2026 20:18

I agree with the posters who are saying it comes down to personal choice and taste ,rather than it being suitable for a certain age group

OneNewEagle · 26/10/2026 20:28

It’s more a retro style than age style. I don’t like navy but if that had some orange in it it might catch my eye. I’m in my 50s.

Why would the people in your life see you as a little old lady, do they behave like that?

Bubblewrap100 · 26/10/2026 21:13

If it was soft leather, thicker strap and different colours I’d like it, I’m 57. I like the shape of it and the chevron.
