What age to like this?

How old would someone be to like this handbag?

I ask because I bought it as a gift for a friend and someone else has said it's too old/young for them (don't want to say which so don't prejudice any answers!)

What age to like this?

I’m not keen , I’m 62 and prefer leather mini backpacks for everyday . I think my mum might like it she’s 89 . I wouldn’t buy it for my daughters they are 36 and 23 .
You obviously know your friends taste though and she may like it very much .

TheSquareMile · 26/10/2026 13:37

It has a slightly retro 70s/80s look to it, actually, so I can imagine it really appealing to someone over 50.

It's also a 'proper handbag', so might not appeal to younger women, who may well prefer a small rucksack or cross body bag.

I like it, actually.

dobedowaaaa · 26/10/2026 13:39

For this one, I would market it for over 70's or it looks quite retro so maybe someone young who likes funky retro 80's accessories? I do think handbags are a really personal item like jewellery that you have to really know the person, that it's their style and get a gift receipt if they want to change it, eg my old school friend loves vintage clothing so I bought her a black & red vintage polka dot clutch bag, but I wouldn't buy it for any of my other friends .

Dottiethelurcher · 26/10/2026 13:40

Whether someone likes it or not may be more a matter of personal taste than age. Generally I would say it’s middle aged or over but all the young ones go around with longchamp bags so what do I know. I’d have to know someone quite well to buy them this as taste is so personal. Does it look like something they would wear to you?

Growlybear83 · 26/10/2026 13:40

I don’t see a bag like that as being particularly appropriate for any age. It’s not to my taste at 68 but it wouldn’t have been to my taste when I was 18.

Growlybear83 · 26/10/2026 13:42

I meant to add that I think all bags are pretty much ageless and it’s just a matter of personal taste.

TheRealMrsJamieFraser · 26/10/2026 13:48

Gosh I’m sorry I really don’t like that at all - I’m 50 but a relatively young ish one (I think).
I dislike the colour combination and the pattern, and the style of bag is quite old fashioned.
To me it would be less about what age of person would like this bag but what their style or preferred colours might be.

willowstar · 26/10/2026 13:51

Hmmm. I am 52 and don't like handbags at all. I have a couple of those cross body phone type bags for travelling and have big bags I use for work, but I don't liem being encumbered by handbags as they slow me down. So, at 52 I don't like it but wouldn't have liked it at any age.

There is no way my 17 year old daughter would like it.

My 76 year old mum would probably like it.

elQuintoConyo · 26/10/2026 13:54

I'd change the strap and wear it, but my fashion is all over the place - big boots, ballet flats, sometimes goth, sometimes 90s student, sometimes baggy trousers, sometimes corduroy mini skirt, Massimo Duti shirt dress, big flowing flowery affairs, blazers....

So, that'll be a 'no' for everyone else! 🤣 But I'd definitely change the strap, that's what makes it look like my dgm would have used it and I'm in my 50s.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/10/2026 13:54

It’s a style or taste thing, rather than an age thing. If someone likes handbags in that style, and likes a retro vibe, this will be a winner. Otherwise, no.

DidoAndAeneasWereInLove · 26/10/2026 13:56

It looks like the bags the ladies have at my mum’s social group. She’s in her 80s.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/10/2026 13:56

72 and not to my taste at all.

CostcoFanofThree · 26/10/2026 14:01

It’s a style thing not an age thing.
No one in our family 95-13 would wear it well.

Floisme · 26/10/2026 14:12

I hope your friend isn't in her 70's op because I don't like it and it's a well known fact on S&B that all 70+ women like the same things. Hmm

I assume you know your friend and bought it thinking she would like it so I think this gives you an advantage over all of us. I'd stick to your original instincts but, if you're worried, give her the receipt and tell her you won't be in the least offended if she wants to return it.

IsabellineFenwick · 26/10/2026 14:14

I'm 45 and it reminds me of dinner ladies and older women from when I was a kid in the 80's, with their bags from the market. Sorry OP.

ExquisiteDecoration · 26/10/2026 14:17

I think it's more abut taste / style, none of my mum (85), me (60) or DD (20) would use it but it just isn't any of our styles, Mum likes a Roka type with loads of pockets, I mainly use the Uniqlo small ones or a large plain leather tote if I need to take a laptop or similar and DD uses either backpacks or canvas totes, she's never had an actual handbag.

I agree with this. I'm 62 and I like colourful bags, I always have, but that one's not my style.

Lessisbest · 26/10/2026 14:35

I have a different opinion - I think it's cool and - assuming it's someone's personal style - I'd say anywhere from 20 to 60. I think under 20's would think it's too old for them, and over 60s that it's too young for them.

It isn't too young for them of course, but that's my guess at the general perception.

It's a bit bold for me to carry off at any age personally, bold clothes/bags tend to "wear me".

SleepingisanArt · 26/10/2026 14:37

I'm 59 and a handbag (with shoulder strap attached) user. But that is not to my taste at all. It reminds me of the first 'proper' handbags we all had as teenagers in the 1980s and some things should be left in their original period in my opinion. So as PPs have said its not an age thing it's a taste thing. If your friend likes that kind of thing then that's OK....

mynameiscalypso · 26/10/2026 14:37

I think it’s ridiculous to have something as too old or too young but, if I had to guess, I’d say that the person said it was too old for your friend. It really depends on your taste though. I wouldn’t use it at any age but I have friends in their mid-forties who might like it. I’d be more likely to buy it for my MIL than anyone else though.

ToadRage · 26/10/2026 14:43

Not for me. It looks like an old lady bag.

Idayatatime · 26/10/2026 14:49

It's hideous for any age group.

Laiste · 26/10/2026 14:56

It looks 80s ish.
The chevron style V stripe and the yellow.

Was it expensive ?
