What do you wear under jumpers?

I have got lots of different styles of jumper some loose and some fitted, but it doesn’t always feel right to wear them with nothing underneath. But if I wear a T-shirt, it feels too bulky.

What do people wear underneath their jumpers?

It’s 100posts in so sorry if someone has already mentioned these, I skipped to end when it started becoming a debate about how to correctly use a jumper.

these M&S vests (also available with straps)
I’ve got them in every colour - except this khaki which is new 👀- and wear them under nearly everything all winter. I like the lace trim on sleeves and neckline which looks intentional if they happen to peek out.

My mind is blown by this thread.
I don't visit here often.
But surely jumpers are an extra layer and not a replacement for a shirt/top of some sort?!

(Wanders off to find a board I'm more suited to Smile)

My mind is also blown. People wearing just a tee shirt or nothing under a jumper? In winter I wear a long sleeve merino base layer, a long sleeve merino top, then a merino jumper.

VerbenaGirl · Today 07:22

The lightest of the tops from M&S Heatgen range are my go to for under everything.

I have four or five tight fitting cotton vests that I wear tucked into my trousers with a jumper over the top. They work well as an extra layer for warmth without adding extra bulk as you say.

I can't imagine wearing a t shirt or long sleeved top under a jumper it would feel way too hot. But this is also why I can't cope with wool jumpers as they make me really itchy so I can see the layers would be necessary there. But a cotton jumper over a cotton vest works well for me.

If I was too hot wearing a jumper, if be turning the thermostat down in the winter 😉
It's once we are all bundled up and still cold, that the heating goes on.

I wish I had the confidence in the various temperatures of the day to be able to wear a jumper as a top or with the little vest. I wore an outfit yesterday that was perfect for weather but then unexpectedly sat in a conservatory for a few hours. My underlayer was a very thin long sleeved shirt, but I liked the way the collar (vaguely like the neru/grandad shirt collar) was just visible at the neckline.

eurochick · Today 08:19

Uniqlo heat tech in various thicknesses under everything from October to March!

I would melt in a pool of sweat with all that on!

hexsnidgett · Today 11:46

I wonder if this explains why I nearly always need to size up in jumpers? Are the manufacturers assuming people wear nothing (or just a bra) underneath?

MrsUrdd · Today 11:50

Sometimes a vest, but usually a close fitting t. Mainly as I want to keep armpits away from jumpers. I wash jumpers as infrequently as I can get away with

Me too, completely unthinkable.

The main reason for taking jumpers off is at work, I work in one of those barely insulated tin buildings on an industrial estate where the temperature inside is highly dependent on whether the sun is shining or not, it can get really warm in autumn/winter/spring if the sun is out and it feels silly putting the aircon on when it's cold outside so jumpers off and wear teeshirts in the office. Also at home even if the heating isn't on, if I'm doing housework I get warm easily, I also don't want to get my jumpers dirty so it's down to a teeshirt then too. I run hot though and never wear base layers, thermals etc.

BattleHimForARepublic · Today 12:03

Decent knitwear is so expensive I don’t wear mine to lounge at home during cold weather. Only raggedy old stuff or thick hoodies acquired here and there.

MidnightMeltdown · Today 12:11

This thread is a proper education!

Of course a jumper is an added layer. 😅

I don’t wear knitwear in hot weather.

For warmer months I have a few in a silk/cotton/cashmere mix which I wear with a close fitting vest top underneath. That sort of jumper would be laundered after maybe every second wear.

For cold weather I have more Shetland, Geelong, Merino, Alpaca, Cashmere, etc knitwear than anything else. (I’m very fussy and happy to pay a lot for each item so they’ll last for years and years.) I wear them over short or long sleeved t shirts (linen / cotton or Uniqlo thermal) or cotton / silk shirts, depending on the temperature. I wouldn’t expect to launder these jumpers / cardigans more than once a year unless they’re getting really heavy wear. After each wear I turn them inside out and hang them in the open air (if not outside then by an open window). Then I re-iron them if needed and drape them over a rack, rather than putting them back in the drawers for clean knitwear.

But really, it’s no wonder so many posters complain of itchy knitwear, and the necessity for constant wool washing and shrinking and bobbling, etc, etc. You’re just doing it wrong!

I think for me it depends on the type of jumper. If it’s a thin, fitted merino wool or silk mix type jumper then I definitely wouldn’t wear anything underneath as it would add bulk and ruin the shape.

With thicker jumpers, and particularly cashmere, I usually wear something like a thin long sleeve silk t-shirt underneath as I don’t want to be constantly washing them.

I don’t see the point of wearing a vest top under a jumper as it will still be in contact with skin and still need to be washed! If I just want an extra layer to potentially take off, then I would wear a cardigan, not a jumper. I don’t want to be pulling stuff over my head and getting makeup on it/ messing up hair etc. If I’m wearing a jumper then it’s not coming off!

lindyloo57 · Today 15:52

I ware the marks and spencer thin long sleeved tops under my cashmere jumpers, and when it's colder the the thick ones, some are crew neck but I also like the high neck like a small polo neck.

I'd never put on a jumper without the option to take it off during the day, I overheat easily, but I can do it without hair and make-up problems as my hair is wavy and make-up minimal. The only time it's annoying is if I am wearing glasses instead of contacts that day and forget to take them off first.

TRS20 · Today 17:46

Nothing if the jumper is a decent wool and cashmere content as they are very warm. Sometimes a vest top

Mourningmorningsleep · Today 17:55

A t-shirt so I still look respectable if I enter a warmer room and have to remove the jumper.

independentfriend · Today 18:00

From what you say you want some form fitting tops with short sleeves.

You might be discovering a way to save money - if you're too hot with two layers (long sleeve t shirt + jumper) on, try turning your heating down / off.

Myli1 · Today 18:02

Depends how scratchy the material of the jumper is. If it’s nice and soft then normally nothing underneath, otherwise I’d wear a tight tee shirt, and also a tee shirt under if it was really cold.

It’s more hot if in restaurants, pubs, etc, not too bad at home!

You must have a very overheated house, it's standard winter wear here (not the UK).
