What do you wear under jumpers?

I have got lots of different styles of jumper some loose and some fitted, but it doesn’t always feel right to wear them with nothing underneath. But if I wear a T-shirt, it feels too bulky.

What do people wear underneath their jumpers?

M&S very thin long-sleeved thermal vests. Or their very thin long-sleeved tops with wool that I think are new this year - all sorts of neck shapes and colours. Or blouses.

I have to have a thin layer below or I'd be spending far too long washing and drying wool things which I can't be bothered with.

I'm another one who sees jumpers as the extra layer I put on when it gets cold. So, I'm currently wearing a thin cashmere jumper, and underneath I am wearing a vest and a thin long sleeve shirt. I am, quite frankly, cold, even wearing 3 layers! When it gets really cold, I have any number of thermal long sleeved vests and heat tech tops, and thicker, warmer jumpers. Sometimes, i wear a thin jumper underneath a thick jumper. Between the months of October and April I never wear less than 3 layers.

All these people only wearing a jumper, you must heat your houses very well.

I do, yes. I grew up in a house which got ice on the insides of the windows and I had to sleep with my clothes in bed with me so I could get dressed under the covers in the morning as it was too cold to get up otherwise. I swore that once I had my own place I would never be that cold again, and I haven't been. I can't abide being cold inside.

I just realised reading this thread, I don’t actually own a single jumper!

I think I own more jumpers than anything else in my wardrobe! ☺️ I admit I am a bit obsessed with knitwear though and I need wool in the winter to make me feel warm enough.

Like others here, I am a fan of Uniqlo Heattech tops under my jumpers - I’ve got the full range 😂 thin/thick, long/short sleeved, various colours, built up my collection over many years - they last well though so probably won’t need to get any more for another decade - they are the workhorses of my wardrobe!

It has never occurred to me to wear a jumper on its own! Depending on the weather / the jumper either a close fitting vest top (hoping I won’t need to take the jumper off) or a slim fit t-shirt or long sleeved t-shirt. Primark are good for slim fit long sleeves I’ve found.

GameOfJones · Yesterday 20:50

I have four or five tight fitting cotton vests that I wear tucked into my trousers with a jumper over the top. They work well as an extra layer for warmth without adding extra bulk as you say.

I can't imagine wearing a t shirt or long sleeved top under a jumper it would feel way too hot. But this is also why I can't cope with wool jumpers as they make me really itchy so I can see the layers would be necessary there. But a cotton jumper over a cotton vest works well for me.

You don't have to wear jumpers at all, which side-steps the whole "what should I wear under them?" problem. I don't wear jumpers because taking them off requires me to take my glasses off and wearing them as my next-to-the-skin layer is itchy and I get too hot.

Under my cardigans, I wear my normal work clothes.

Under front-fastening hoodies, I wear t-shirts.

M&S thermal thin strap vest tops.

AutumnOakTree · Yesterday 21:00

T shirt or long sleeve top. I remember when I went to uni that I was slightly surprised that people wore jumpers without a layer underneath.

Zanatdy · Yesterday 21:02

always a vest top

I lived with my Nanna for a year when I was 12-13 and she had single glazing and no central heating. Never forgotten how old I was getting up for my paper round. Thankfully never had to be that cold at home again.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 21:05

Slim fit t-shirt or vest.

ArundelPike · Yesterday 21:06

Either a fine knit cashmere vest if it’s cold, or a stretch cotton vest or a heat-tech vest from Uniqlo, it really depends on the jumper and the temperature.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Yesterday 21:07

And when it's properly cold, a thermal vest.

hexsnidgett · Yesterday 21:12

Today a long sleeved thermal , but often a tshirt, sometimes both.
I would never wear a jumper without at least a tshirt.

cannaethink · Yesterday 21:13

Long sleeved thermal tops for me. Tucked in! And sometimes a t shirt on top of that if I’m going for a layered look, or if I’m wearing a particularly itchy jumper that I can still feel through the thermal, or it’s really cold. All my jumpers are wool and get washed rarely.

What do people wear underneath their jumpers?

A vest top that is edged in lace usually works well. It all depends on the neckline and the colour.

CreepingCrone · Yesterday 21:15

M&S long sleeve thermals are my go-to under jumpers and layers

Charlenedickens · Yesterday 21:18

I’m surprised at rhis thread, are people not wearing coats out or are their homes cold?

I wear a bra or nipple pasties and wear jumpers as a top. I don’t wear them as an extra layer, if I need an extra layer I’m outside and am wearing a coat or jacket.

SixthWorstOption · Yesterday 21:19

Now that it’s heading into winter, Uniqlo heat tech 👍

Same. I've got some of the long-sleeved thin ones with a scoop neck and also some of the thicker ones with a crew neck / fleecey insides, sonI can choose depending on how cold I'm likely to be. I don't like wearing jumpers without anything underneath!

I don't wear jumpers as an extra layer. I wear them as a top. Have I been wearing jumpers wrong all my life 😂

Same here 😁

Also menopause means I definitely don't need to wear thermals!

Are you me?? Exact same childhood experience (the first person to pee in the morning would often find ice had formed in the toilet bowl). There is a hell of a lot I’d sacrifice before me, and particularly our DS, will feel uncomfortably cold for an extended period of time in our home. That all said, I still wear a t-shirt and/or a vest under a jumper, because I go outside.

Me too! I’ll wear a vest if it’s low cut or a bit see through, but otherwise just my bra

Alwayswonderedwhy · Yesterday 21:34

I thin t-shirt. I get itchy if I wear wool next to my skin & also want to be able to wear jumpers a few times before washing. I've always thought of jumpers as an extra layer & want to be able to take it off when I'm warm.
