What do you wear under jumpers?

I have got lots of different styles of jumper some loose and some fitted, but it doesn’t always feel right to wear them with nothing underneath. But if I wear a T-shirt, it feels too bulky.

What do people wear underneath their jumpers?

Long soft jersey cotton vest, (I saw a video labeling this as ‘the millennial emotional support vest’ which felt pretty accurate tbh 😄)and long sleeve tight soft t shirt . In Winter the long sleeve layer will be merino or some sort of heat tech .

Gosh, reading these responses makes me realise how abnormally cold i must 'run' as I wear at least 2 layers - e.g. vest and long sleeve tshirt - under most jumpers, even thicker ones! Would love to just wear a t shirt! I do dread winter for how bulky I feel in all my clothing and the headache of having to dress for the outdoors, tube AND office in one day, all of which tend to be vastly different temperatures.

I must be hot blooded or hormonal because a long sleeved or thermal top under a jumper would be too hot, unless I was standing around outside.

i do sometimes wear a lace vest, but I worry if I get hot I wouldn’t want to take the jumper off and just wear the vest as it’s like underwear. I do find it hot in quite a lot of heated places.

but if I wear a t shirt, which is good because it means the jumper doesn’t need washing as often, and I can remove the jumper if I get hot, then it feels bulky and makes me look bigger!

every year I have this problem and I never know what to do, I love jumpers too and have loads!

I’m shocked at all those wearing two tops. A jumper is a top! I just wear my bra under it. I’m not a sweaty person so they don’t smell ( I use deodorant) and don’t need washing too often.

quequerido · Yesterday 22:20

Either a vest top. If it’s not too cold or a thermal long sleeved top.

Denim4ever · Yesterday 22:20

Crop top type sports bra. Plus vest top if it's cold or thin t shirt of it's colder

DrNo007 · Yesterday 22:22

Silk and/or merino wool vests (with long sleeves) from Bella di Notte and Patra. I have lots.

Mamabear487 · Yesterday 22:22

A bra or bralet.

Pointete · Yesterday 22:29

I always wear a short sleeve or long sleeve t shirt under a jumper. I don't wash them often as it's bad for the wool (and a hassle to hand wash). I like to wear something that covers the armpits as that's where tops tend to smell. I always wash a top after one wear if it's worn next to the skin. Even if it's not exactly smelly, it doesn't smell fresh.

I always buy crew neck jumpers (where you can't see the t shirt underneath). V neck jumpers stress me out because I have to worry about whether the t shirt colour goes well with the jumper.

Thermals or a tight fitting merino wool jumper. Sometimes both. I feel the cold and hate it.

goingtotown · Yesterday 22:39

M&S camisole sized down for a nice snug fit.

CherryKerry · Yesterday 22:41

Currently wearing a vest top, tshirt and jumper. Lots of layers all nicely tucked in ☺️.

Melancholyflower · Yesterday 22:42

All those people who see jumpers as a top, rather than a warmer layer, what about school uniforms - children don't go to school in a shirt/polo shirt or a jumper/sweatshirt, but not both? They wear both and take the jumper off if they are too hot.

bababamama · Yesterday 22:42

Depends on weather and the style, long sleeve t shirt, vest top, nothing, thermal base layer…

I get hot too. I usually wear zipped hoodies or cardigans for this reason.

ExquisiteDecoration · Yesterday 23:09

Tee shirts so armpits don't touch the jumper and also for if I get too hot and want to take the jumper off. I'd boil if I wore anything long sleeved under a jumper. Plus the bulk would be annoying.

Floristian · Yesterday 23:11

Uniqlo thermal tops with cashmere. They're much thinner than their normal thermal tops and feel lovely against the skin.

My mind is blown by this thread.
I don't visit here often.
But surely jumpers are an extra layer and not a replacement for a shirt/top of some sort?!

(Wanders off to find a board I'm more suited to Smile)

I'm with you. I had no idea people weren't wearing jumpers as an extra layer over their t-shirts 😂

I wear jumpers as a top but my jumpers are nothing like the ones that my DC wear as part of school uniform. Mine are thick and cosy, and I’d be too hot with another layer underneath. School jumpers are thin in comparison.

I just buy jumpers of different thickness to suit different temperatures. So I have thinner ones I wear in autumn and spring that I can wear with a layer underneath and not feel too hot. And thicker/warmer fabrics for freezing winter days that I can wear with a layer underneath and not feel too hot.

I got a couple of these from asos. https://www.asos.com/prd/211278636?acquisitionsource=pasteboard Got them last year. They have washed and worn really well. I wear them under jumpers/sweatshirts. Love them as I get cold. Find them as good as the Uniqlo thermal tops I have

This thread is a proper education!

Of course a jumper is an added layer. 😅

I don’t wear knitwear in hot weather.

For warmer months I have a few in a silk/cotton/cashmere mix which I wear with a close fitting vest top underneath. That sort of jumper would be laundered after maybe every second wear.

For cold weather I have more Shetland, Geelong, Merino, Alpaca, Cashmere, etc knitwear than anything else. (I’m very fussy and happy to pay a lot for each item so they’ll last for years and years.) I wear them over short or long sleeved t shirts (linen / cotton or Uniqlo thermal) or cotton / silk shirts, depending on the temperature. I wouldn’t expect to launder these jumpers / cardigans more than once a year unless they’re getting really heavy wear. After each wear I turn them inside out and hang them in the open air (if not outside then by an open window). Then I re-iron them if needed and drape them over a rack, rather than putting them back in the drawers for clean knitwear.

But really, it’s no wonder so many posters complain of itchy knitwear, and the necessity for constant wool washing and shrinking and bobbling, etc, etc. You’re just doing it wrong!
