Dressing with a bit of an 'edgy' look.

Hi, I need to re vamp my wardrobe for autumn/winter and need some advice on how to incorporate a bit of 'edgy chic'. I'm early 40's, 5ft 2, size 14/16 and hour glass shape with big boobs and a bit of a mum tum. I have dark hair and olive skin, so tend to suit darker/autumn colours. I need a couple of staple bits, and some clothes I can also wear for work ( casual dress code). I already have some chunky boots and a grey leather jacket. I went shopping today in local town and it was totally uninspiring!

@krustykittens , that was me and I'm actually only 48 and it was my friend with me. She's had some work done though.

Fucking hell mate, if you are only 48, then you have truly lived the rock and roll life. Respect!

But your mate needs to get a refund.

I think trying to incorporate edgy, if it’s not your natural style is going to look odd, I’m sorry OP. People will think youve lost your mind. In our 40s, we should be dressing as ourselves, we know who we are by now. I was a teen goth, now I’m an alt adult working high up in in corporate role. Are you alt? I’m wearing chains on my black wide legged trousers and heavy mixed metal jewellery with my M&S merino wool polo neck. I do short pleated skirts with 10 denier tights and a band tee and a well fitting blazer, I still favour a chunky shoe even though they’re somewhat out of trend but I’m not changing 30 years of knowing what I like lol.

I love Thomas sabo and Tilly sveaas for big chunky jewellery and skulls and daggers. Oversized leather jacket can go with anything as do a pair of doc martens.

I am much older, but I do remember the change of shape, and trying to change to a more mature style but keep the sharp edgy. After all 40 is young, but not teen.

High street ATM is really dull, dull colours/shapes and vey uninspiring. (Unless you go into M&S where everything is trying to be teen/20 even in the classic section aargh! And is all designed for the slim of hip)

@Richtea67 Edgy on this thread seems to be "rock chick". Be wary -do you remember this thread

Maybe start a bit at a time- try things in a different style that you can mix in. This might avoid feeling like you are dressing up.

Anyone want to come and mourn the reality vs expectation of new purchases with me? | Mumsnet

I bought this [[http://www.sezane.com/us/product/la-liste/lio-jacket beautiful jacket]] online. In my mind I'd look like Blondie in the 80s, very rock...

I should have said that edgy to me does mean 'rock chick'! But that isn't necessarily what edgy means to others.

Do a LOT of research into what you think you are going to like and what you think will suit you, keep an eye out for that look and personally, I would keep my experimentation to ebay until I was really confident, that way if you have made a mistake, you won't have spent too much money and you might claw it back reselling it.

I went through a phase when the kids were in primary school of wanting to soften my look and I wore a lot more colour, tea dresses, tweed jackets trimmed in velvet, sort of bohemian vintage (I think?! I still don't know!). I don't know why, it really wasn't me and I was never really happy with the way I looked. I didn't know what I was doing and I couldn't pull it off. But being on a very tight budget meant I didn't spend a lot of money so it wasn't ruinous going down this stylistic side road. I am so much happier back in head to foot black and studs!

I hate myself for saying this but - truly - if you need to ask where to buy an ‘edgy’ look, you’re not going to look in the least edgy. And definitely not from the bland High St stores suggested here. At best you will look like every single other woman who has gone shopping with the same intention. (Which is perfectly fine.)

Can you not just decide to buy clothes you like, and project edginess through your grooming, conversation, interests and skills?

This. Just buy what you feel looks good/inspires you, don't wait for a prescription from mumsnetters who don't know what you look like. I don't have the looks/body proportions to pull off any look, it doesn't matter how much I spend or ask for shop recommendations, it will never have the intended effect unfortunately.

greglet · 15/09/2026 16:50

I buy a lot from All Saints, The Kooples and Zadig & Voltaire on Vinted. And M&S jeans 😂

FilmsandBooks · 15/09/2026 16:59

I would never in my wildest dreams have described All Saints as edgy which just goes to show that edgy can mean very different things to different people, so having more of an idea of what you want would be useful.

StylishAndBeautiful · 15/09/2026 17:12

@Holidaymodeon , It wasn't really me.Smile
Nice bit of nostalgia there. Ta.

@Zippedydoobaah , I go for a look. It's pretty much what I have. It is usually 1 bright garment, the rest black. Not sure if I look edgy or not. Don't care as long as I am happy in my clothes.

I LOVE this video and this song! I was 14 when Hysteria was released (I think!) and my mum went with me to Wembley to see them for the first time because I was too young to go on my own! I got to high five Joe at a concert this year and I lost my fucking mind. If I had still had a pencil case, I would still be doodling "Mrs Elliot" all over it!

I get most of my clothes from Vinted and charity shops these days either a few pieces from the likes of Ragged Priest, The Hippie Shake and Disturbia etc. not saying I’m particularly edgy either, it’s just never struck me that All Saints is!

Funny, I passed Allsaints today after having read this thread, it always reminds me of
Next : ‘After Dark’ .

ah I must have been around the same age. They’re great for a nostalgic rock scream yell singalong. I took my youngest kids to their first big gig this year and the warm up was an 80s cover band and they loved the def leppard tunes, it was lovely to share that bit of my childhood with them

My tip might be start with shoes, accessories and coats. I have one really unusual pair of boots I live in during autumn winter and they get compliments everywhere. they're kind of steampunk clumpy ankle boots made of a textured patchwork and make everything look a bit more interesting (and go with a surprising amount of stuff)

My 24 year old daughter came with me and we had a fantastic time. When they sang this song Joe sang, "I'm sweet from my head down to my ........." and she swooned along with me! He might be in his 60s but he still has charisma in spades!

Sorry to derail the thread, OP. In case anyone was interested DD was in a black satin slip maxi dress and cowboy boots, wearing a black leather biker jacket she had inherited from me and she looked FAB! I admit, not hard to do when you are 24...

You’re definitely not too old, it’s a lot of timeless stuff and lots of it anyone could wear, it’s just what and how you style it.
im not a disturbia person but theres a particular dress which i love and keeps popping up everywhere in my targeted ads (🤦🏽‍♀️) .
its been over a year now and it never seems to reduce in price 🤯

I think I might struggle to pull off some looks, but apart from the stripy sock, I've got the clothes.
My next edgy look.
