Has anyone found M&S clothing sizing smaller than usual lately?

Visited a really large M&S - the whole range in store and lots of available sizes.
I has always found them to be a generous sizing and have sized down.

I’ve recently lost about a stone, but yet today everything was cut so small. There are some beautiful pieces, silky brown dress and blue mini skirt that are part of their current advertising. But they are cut so slinky, tight waistbands etc
anyone else experienced this?

Yes I agree. I think it is because more fitted clothes appear to be fashionable at the moment.

OneNewEagle · 09/09/2026 16:41

Yes no idea what sizes to order from there anymore.

savemysleep · 09/09/2026 16:52

They are trying to attract a younger customer, could it be that?

DaftNoodle · 09/09/2026 16:56

Yes I’m usually a 14 in M&S, tried a 14 dress on and it was tiny could barely do it up but the 16 absolutely drowned me and looked ridiculous!!
normal work trousers usually a 14 and a 16 was way too tight…it made no sense!!

bababamama · 09/09/2026 16:59

They announced that they had new size charts (bringing them in line with other more premium brands I presume) I had to go up to an 18 whereas the dress I was wearing shopping also M&S was 14!

MeAndMyGhost · 09/09/2026 17:02

Smaller but also, longer in the legs.

I am 5'6 closer to 5'7 and for the first time in my M&S life, had to buy a short leg length on some linen trousers this summer which skimmed the ground if wearing flats.

cityliving99 · 09/09/2026 17:04

They are now more accurately sized, which makes shopping easier. I am now the same size in all the shops where I buy clothes.

Dahliasrule · 09/09/2026 17:11

Ah, that solves it! I have to return two pairs of trousers to M and S which I ordered a size larger than my previous pairs as I have put on weight. They were tighter than the originals. I am also now an extra short instead of short, although I was originally a medium!

lindyloo57 · 09/09/2026 17:15

I was always a size 10 in marks jeans, but now the 10 are too small but the 12 are too big , so I need to find another brand who do a short leg.

summater · 09/09/2026 17:18

I bought some barrel leg cords yesterday and had to size down from 14L to 12L, my waist is about 32 inches so definitely a 14.

Sunbringer · 09/09/2026 17:22

So just go up a size… there is no set measurement of what a dress size is so every shop varies. Just buy what fits.

It would be best to be consistent though or a lot will return if bought online because they don't fit.

bananaapplepears · 09/09/2026 17:32

The sales assistant said to me recently that they were moving away from the vanity sizing that they previously did to be more in line with other high street retailers.

Gettingbysomehow · 09/09/2026 19:25

Marks is ok Im all kinds of sizes in there from 8 to 12 but I can usually find a fit if I ignore the label.
Monsoon however...Ive had to ditch Monsoon becsuse my size 10 is fantastically tight and the 12 a huge sack...nothing inbetween and nothing adjustable.
So pointless trying anything on.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 09/09/2026 19:30

M&S has ridiculous sizing at the minute. Coats and jackets are enormous, trousers, skirts and dresses are tiny. I am a UK 10. I need a 6 in a jacket and a 14 in trousers or dresses in M&S.

itsnothingoriginal · 09/09/2026 20:08

Yes, especially as they've moved to S/M/L in a lot of their ranges. Really liked some of their tops this season but I'm usually a 12 and couldn't fit into a medium in most of them.

Left the store feeling frustrated and a bit depressed!!

CurdinHenry · 09/09/2026 20:10

The sizes were getting ridiculous. I have a BMI of 20 (ie normal) and I'm not petite and size 8s were too big so there will have been plenty of women who couldn't find anything. So it was introduced size 0s or recalibrate I guess

Allmarbleslost · 09/09/2026 20:13

I haven't noticed them being smaller but they have messed around with trouser lengths and I now can't buy trousers from M&S at all. I'm 5ft 6 and the regular length is far too long and short length too short. I used to fit nicely in a regular. Guess I won't be shopping there any more!

Livingoverseas123 · 09/09/2026 20:17

I think I have got fatter.

Same here! I bought some barrel leg jeans from them a week ago and the 8 fits, although I did need to buy a short, rather than usual regular, but small price to pay!

Shoobadadoo · 09/09/2026 20:19

I’m grateful because I always found them hugely vanity sizing (my mum loves it because she’s a 14 but a 12 there and makes her feel great).

i just prefer them to be more in line with true sizing

If you can’t fit a medium just try a large. No one checks your labels, just buy what fits you

SpiralSister · 09/09/2026 20:21

I think they used to be extremely generous, and are now less so.

I am reliably a 10 bottom and 12 top in M&S, and my measurements match their size charts.

I used to comfort myself that I was a 16-18 in M&S when I was fat, whereas I was really a 20 in most other shops..

Bit of a problem for anybody who would have comfortably fitted into an L when there isn't an XL in the new smaller sizes, though.

M&S does an XL though?
