Autumn coat ideas

Hello, I'm looking for some inspiration for a new autumn jacket/coat. Requirements are:

  • Has to be fairly all-purpose, including travel to work, going out to pub etc, but also school run
  • Has to be practical. I walk 2-3 miles a day on average. But I also want some style.
  • Has to go with both black work trousers and jeans, ie not be black or blue
  • Has to suit size 10, 5'4", small of nork
  • Patterns and designs considered
  • If it somehow conveyed "I used to be an indie kid in the 90s but now I need to look like a grown up" that would be amazing
  • Budget up to £100

I haven't bought a new coat for years so I'm out of touch with what's available and I need some ideas. All suggestions for styles and/or brands to look at would be very welcome. Thank you!

Trench? Can get in different lengths and neutral colours.

I instinctively like this too but I'd definitely need to see it in real life to be sure!

Thanks. I've never owned a trench coat. For some reason I feel like they're what real grown ups wear and I don't feel like one of those! I should probably at least try one on before I rule them out though.

What about a patterned raincoat? Like the tin cloth ones from sea salt or boden.

Often on sale but I'd buy from vinted.

My autumn jacket is a longline cord blazer style in a deep dusky purple. I'm not at all fashionable but I like that it's different.

i Ordered this: https://www.outdoorandcountry.co.uk/womens-barbour-kinsale-tartan-showerproof-cape.html?c=Dress%20Navy%20Tartan for all of the reasons you’ve listed for coat!

rivalsbinge · 07/09/2026 18:51

Oh ignore me, just saw the budget, in which case I’d go Vinted and Barbour.

DeHumanaeMentisApatheia · 08/09/2026 06:26

Toast; on Vinted.

Indie kids are all rewilding and cheese making now …

Did you say long or short? I’ve just bought this for the milder months until I need a full on winter coat. Winter coat hunt commences soon!

I got myself a Janelle from Seasalt’s outlet shop on EBay. It’s warm (but not too warm to walk briskly in), long (I’m 5’5 but I have the tall because the regular wasn’t available in my size), and waterproof. I got mine after seeing my friend in one, she looked fabulous and I hope I look ok in mine too!!

Good call on their ebay page - I bought a couple of their coats over the last 2 years and they are proper bargains. Nice coats too, their 'wood cabin' coats are good autumn coats, not too thick and hang nice. I wouldn't buy their duffle though, I did last year and every single bit of fluff, hair and dust sticks to it.

I have this superdry (no big identifying logo on the outside!) jacket in black.
It's a great wee jacket for Autumn, lightweight but cosy. I think the green is a lovely colour, and a decent price in the green:

I treated myself to a lovely new leather jacket. This is the one that i bought but they have various styles and colours. They are not unreasonably expensive for real leather.

Oh yes, leather is so useful, and Vinted is also a place to get bargains on leather jackets. For some reason even good brands like All Saints go very low. I just picked up a brown leather/nubuck bomber jacket for £15, and previously a BNWOT black leather biker jacket for something like £30.

That’s a great colour jacket, ToadRage!

growinguptobreakingdown · 10/09/2026 05:29

That Didrikson coat is a good price. They are excellent - proper hoods and waterproof. My winter parka has been going strong for 16 years now. I'm going to see if I can find the sold out beige one elsewhere
Op you can get trench coats on vinted super cheap. I bought a M&S long one for less than a tenner on there and it is in perfect condition. They only work for about 6 weeks a year so don't buy new.

The one the op commented on liking up to that point was quite short, I think that’s why it went that way- I had been thinking more padded, quilted and longer with a hood before I saw that!!

A bit over budget but I've just bought the FatFace Inverness raincoat in petite length and I love it! A new customer discount could bring it down a bit in price.

Ha, just noticed you linked both already. Yes the Argos/ TU quality one is excellent. Love it.
Also Tesco has one too but not sure on the quality ..
