Autumn coat ideas

Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake · 07/09/2026 08:57

Hello, I'm looking for some inspiration for a new autumn jacket/coat. Requirements are:

  • Has to be fairly all-purpose, including travel to work, going out to pub etc, but also school run
  • Has to be practical. I walk 2-3 miles a day on average. But I also want some style.
  • Has to go with both black work trousers and jeans, ie not be black or blue
  • Has to suit size 10, 5'4", small of nork
  • Patterns and designs considered
  • If it somehow conveyed "I used to be an indie kid in the 90s but now I need to look like a grown up" that would be amazing
  • Budget up to £100

I haven't bought a new coat for years so I'm out of touch with what's available and I need some ideas. All suggestions for styles and/or brands to look at would be very welcome. Thank you!

Ha, just noticed you linked both already. Yes the Argos/ TU quality one is excellent. Love it.
Also Tesco has one too but not sure on the quality ..

Ahh, you’ve cleared something up in that the Argos one is from Tu. Makes sense with the Argos/Sainsburys mash-up. Good to know that one is good in real life, which doesn’t surprise me because Tu is usually great for the price. Slightly regretting I hadn’t seen that one first for myself!

Didriksons discount their old ranges. Which look remarkably like their new range. They are great coats. Completely waterproof and not too puffy or padded.

minipie · 10/09/2026 15:09

If you want to lean into the 90s indie kid idea, I walked into Urban outfitters with my DDs the other day and my god it was like some sort of time machine. Lots of little fitted jackets, many asymmetric that really took me back. Not really any coats but imagine they will kick in to the range as the weather gets colder.

Or, if you want a more parka/puffer type I like the look of the Passenger one https://www.passenger-clothing.com/products/kinsey-recycled-2-0-jacket-fir-tree www.passenger-clothing.com/products/kinsey-recycled-2-0-jacket-fir-tree]]]]

I got myself a Janelle from Seasalt’s outlet shop on EBay. It’s warm (but not too warm to walk briskly in), long (I’m 5’5 but I have the tall because the regular wasn’t available in my size), and waterproof. I got mine after seeing my friend in one, she looked fabulous and I hope I look ok in mine too!!

How do you find the sizing please? I have a large bust.

Nothungrycat · 10/09/2026 15:44

If you do decide on something parka-like, Seasalt are currently offering 20% off practically everything, which brings this one https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/seafaring-waterproof-coat down to £136-ish

That's a nice looking coat but the reviews (the ones that i am seeing) are not great.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your thoughts. I have to admit I wasn't thinking along the lines of waterproof and long, more short to mid length, so for example to replace my fake leather biker jacket that is falling apart. I also had a smart black utility jacket in the past which did the same job. It's the current equivalent to these that I'm not sure about. Does that make sense?

Ps I do like some of these longer coats, they're just not quite what I was picturing.

Thanks to this thread I've just ordered a Seasalt Janelle winter parka. It'll be ideal for work and at 20% off right now it's a good time to buy one.
Cheers.

Me too, but the 14 is fine and fits me tidily, true to size. I wouldn’t get a big hoody under it, but other jumpers are fine.

i got a tall one and the sleeves do come a bit lower on my hands, but actually it’s good in the rain as more of me is covered. It isn’t too long.

I may get shot down in flames here but what about a bomber-style jacket, or even a blazer shaped jacket in something like velvet or corduroy? Nice with a lovely scarf, potential to add hat and gloves when it’s nippy. My friend and I both had black velvet blazer type jackets when we were in sixth form- I found mine in a charity shop, it was from Jaeger and I really regretted giving it back to the charity shop a couple of years later! We wore them with everything, but particularly jeans, band t shirts, and Doc Martens that we’d painted ourselves.

I hope you don't get shot down in flames! I like those ideas. I definitely wore similar things in the 90s too.

For this I would definitely look at Urban Outfitters. Also Uniqlo and Zara do a good line in jackets but less indie kid and more modern utilitarian. I have a short cotton showerproof jacket from Uniqlo that does brilliantly - I think this is the current version although the style has changed a bit from mine.

minipie · 10/09/2026 19:02

I like this from Zara or this. Or there’s some other quite nice ones if you’d consider black. Zara loves black…

BeetlebumAndBackAgain · 10/09/2026 19:06

There are a couple of Rockett St George jackets that I really like. Definitely not to all tastes but I love the velvet bomber especially! Although this would not suit the all weather part of the brief..

I really like the one that’s been linked in John Lewis and I can see some similar things in the old range

But are they really sweaty? I can’t tell from looking at the fabric. I think with the super waterproof ones I’m not sure if I need it because if it’s raining that much am I really going to be outside? Then I look at the smart trenchcoat and I think is that really going to cope with rain 😂

@Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake feeling as if you’re looking for something more like a long jacket is that correct? I would agree the urban outfitters is very good for that 90s vibe.

something like this? Depends if you like double breasted but obviously there are loads of other options.

I find Barbour sweaty but not my Didrikson. I’ve been out in torrential rain and it kept everything out. They have different togs and I suspect the waterproof only goes up so far. I can’t remember what site I bought mine off - I think it was recommended on here but it was old season and a lot cheaper.

They aren’t a fashion brand so I suspect designs don’t change that much. I’ve had it a couple of years and it looks pretty brand new.

Yes something like that would be good, thank you.

I've never shopped in Uniqlo, Zara or Urban Outfitters, but I've just had a look and they definitely have some things I'd consider.

I'm going to take myself off to the local temple to capitalism Westfield at the weekend and look at some stuff IRL. I'm not a fan of online shopping.

@Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake glad you like that I really like it but I don’t suit double breasted I think my shoulders are too broad

@LemonTT thanks I might order one of those… it’s not quite smart enough but you know the hybrid smart casual… I can never quite get on the right side of it

Thanks for starting the thread OP. I may have accidentally found a raincoat!

I quite like the Seasalt one, but that doesn’t look like it could cope with cold winds at all

Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake · 11/09/2026 08:28

Ooh I think that second Joe Browns one might be perfect, thank you.
This thread has definitely made me look at brands I'd not previously considered. I've been stuck in a bit of a rut, mostly looking at the same two or three brands.

You don’t think it’s a little fussy, @Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake? Zip and poppers and belt and different fabrics and odd bits of stitching, etc, etc. And the mixing of polyester with the cotton seems less than ideal.

Obviously it’s your choice!

Huckleberries · 11/09/2026 10:06

@Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake that’s really nice

I wouldn’t have thought to look at Joe Brown’s, but I’m loving the moleskin trousers! And there is some nice stuff on there.
