Autumn coat ideas

Hello, I'm looking for some inspiration for a new autumn jacket/coat. Requirements are:

  • Has to be fairly all-purpose, including travel to work, going out to pub etc, but also school run
  • Has to be practical. I walk 2-3 miles a day on average. But I also want some style.
  • Has to go with both black work trousers and jeans, ie not be black or blue
  • Has to suit size 10, 5'4", small of nork
  • Patterns and designs considered
  • If it somehow conveyed "I used to be an indie kid in the 90s but now I need to look like a grown up" that would be amazing
  • Budget up to £100

I haven't bought a new coat for years so I'm out of touch with what's available and I need some ideas. All suggestions for styles and/or brands to look at would be very welcome. Thank you!

I may get shot down in flames here but what about a bomber-style jacket, or even a blazer shaped jacket in something like velvet or corduroy? Nice with a lovely scarf, potential to add hat and gloves when it’s nippy. My friend and I both had black velvet blazer type jackets when we were in sixth form- I found mine in a charity shop, it was from Jaeger and I really regretted giving it back to the charity shop a couple of years later! We wore them with everything, but particularly jeans, band t shirts, and Doc Martens that we’d painted ourselves.

Funnily enough, I have just bought two Jaeger jackets on Vinted! Probably both a bit more dressy than the style you mean - but they're lovely. The quality of vintage velvet jackets is generally much higher too - they're either cotton or silk-blend, whereas today they're usually polyester (which does not make good velvet).

One is, I think, possibly 70s - it's black cotton velvet with a grosgrain trim & a slightly Victoriana vibe. And the other is black jacquard with a pure silk satin lining, which feels sooooo gorgeous to slip on! And it cost me all of £9.10 ...

(I don't think either is what the OP is after - I'm just very chuffed with how lovely they both are!!)

OP - you did say you liked the idea of pattern & something that wasn't black or navy. For times when you don't need waterproof, but need a little bit of warmth, this is a perfect autumn jacket IMO.

No coat suggestion but 'small of nork' made me chuckle

Thanks for the thread - I am looking for a coat too - going to stalk this thread 😅

OP its sounds like something similar to what I'm looking for and I'm not sure it exists. I was a 90s grunge kid and still am in reality so don't want anything too smart or grown up. I also don't want a puffa coat.

I already have a MN approved Didriksons parka for wet and/or very cold days, a lightweight pack a mac for showery summers and a velvet jacket that can be dressed up and down but want to fill the gap with something mid thigh length, perhaps in corduroy or light wool, no hood and in a more interesting colour than black, navy or grey.

And not too expensive because I'm a tightarse who's always going to lose a stone or two 'soon'.

The closest thing I've seen is this:

I'm off out later so I might go and have a look and try on.

Thank you everyone. I've just come back from the shops and I have to say I found it really hard to find stuff I liked. Everything is very baggy and IMO unflattering. I finally chose two jackets from uniqlo that I think are nicer than they look in the links:

https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E487516-000/00?colorDisplayCode=38&sizeDisplayCode=003

The 90s indie kid in me couldn't resist the cord :-)

Neither are ideally what I was looking for, which would have longer and more fitted. But those coats just don't seem to exist at the moment.

Thanks everyone. I may look at a good quality raincoat in the future too.

@Ivebecomeagardenerbymistake nice!

I think the longer ones do exist, but you were looking in actual shops so that’s different.

Probably true. But I'm not good with shopping online. There's so much choice my head explodes!

North face puffs short with funky colours, I got a bright green one last year and wear it all the time.

I think Tesco are surprisingly great for coats. I bought a greenish grey suede funnel neck jacket the other day which is very warm. It looks fantastic.

Here is a terrible picture I screenshot from Instagram.

I instinctively like this too but I'd definitely need to see it in real life to be sure!

I bought it. I returned it. It was tragic.
