My DH wants to buy a couple of hoodies. Now his sons don't wear them anymore two in their forties youngest mid twenties. DH is 76 I'm trying to talk him out of it. Am I out of touch?

My mum is 79 and wears hoodies lots especially in winter.

i don’t see the link between hoodies and a low cut top.

wear what you want

Sounds a bit like you're blaming us for saying he can wear what he likes because he's a sexist old fart who tries to dictate your wardrobe?

You should both wear whatever you like.

You short skirts and low cut tops, him hoodies. (Or whatever you both fancy wearing) Without people throwing insults or trying to control each other's sartorial choices.

This ⬆️.
There's definitely a problem, and it's not the hoodie.

Both my mum.and dad wesr jeans and a hoodie. Mum is 84 and dad is 83.
Clearly they dont look like teens but look like pensioners who are comfortable.

On the other hand he'd go mad if I wore a low cut dress or anything above the knee at my age. The double standards are alive and well.
You can wear a hoodie as well if you want. There's no double standard.

I know I can wear a hoodie. Why can't I leave the house with a bit of cleavage. I have to find a brooch or something to cover it up. Forget anything shorter than a midi length.

He is an adult and last time I checked, wearing a hoodie wasn't illegal.

Okay I'll tell him to get the hoodies to match his balloon pants which he struggles to keep up. Luckily he wears underwear 🤣.

How is a hoodie in any way similar to a low cut frock?

It sounds like you have some issues, but DH's hoddie isn't one. I live a very active lifestyle, so all my friends, male and female, practically live in hoddies when the weather calls for a light jacket.

Why have you son's stopped wearing them? Surely that's because of a change in lifestyle rather than because they're too old for them?

Has he always been so sexist and controlling?

VioletSeagull · 20/08/2026 14:54

Are you trying to veto your husband’s clothing choices because he vetoes yours? Neither of you should control what the other person wears. You wear what you like, he wears what he likes. Simple.

You can. You can wear what ever you fel comfortable in.
Personally I've never worn anything shorter than midi because I dont like my thighs and I feel uncomfortable, but there nothing stopping me.
Also it depends on how much cleavage is a bit I suppose!!

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/08/2026 14:57

Comfy and practical, and suitable for either sex and any age in my book.

Berlinlover · 20/08/2026 14:58

My partner is 71 and wears hoodies.

Spooll · 20/08/2026 14:59

If you let him have them, I bet you're borrowing them in no time 😆

Are you serious? He controls how much boob or leg you show?

Your problem is that your husband believes he has the right to "go mad" if you wear a low cut or above the knee dress - his hoodies are a complete red herring (or perhaps a revenge herring?).

Never too late to leave the bastard (and buy a low cut dress)!

Yes, it's awful isn't it?

Fizbosshoes · 20/08/2026 15:01

DH often wears a hoodie. Hes 65, FIL wears one and hes nearly 90!

desperatemum1234 · 20/08/2026 15:01

Wtf is wrong with a hoodie? Jesus, poor bloke just wants to be comfortable!

Poor bloke? Have you read OP's other posts? He sounds as though he treats her horribly.

You can leave the house with a bit of cleavage. He shouldn’t tell you what to wear and you shouldn’t tell him.

Spooll · 20/08/2026 15:03

What is your objection to the hoodies?

Obviously he shouldn't be trying to controm what you wear either, but why don't you feel he shoukd wear a hoodie? It doesn't seem like the same thing?

DirtyBird · 20/08/2026 15:04

So now it's unacceptable to wear a hoodie past your 20's 😢

It sounds like a metaphor for their marriage.

OreganoandFeta · 20/08/2026 15:07

Two issues here:

  1. Hoodies can be worn comfortably at any age. My Dad is in his 70s and often wears one. You don't have the right to dictate what he wears.
  2. Your DH doesn't, however, have the right to say what you wear. It sounds like he is jealous. Would he be more accepting of low cut tops etc for a nice meal out for just the two of you? Either way, its your decision, not his!
justasking111 · 20/08/2026 15:08

Well thankfully it's summer so he's fine. He'll only wear white tee shirts to show off his tan at the moment. He bought two more this morning . And he's in his short, shorts to show off his legs he won't wear longer shorts. Then he moans if I open a window indoors because he's cold 🥶.

I think it's his vanity these days that irks me.

I'll insist he gets the hoodies for himself. OKAY?

Talk to him about his attitude to your clothes. Has he always been like this?
