Is a hoodie suitable casual wear for a man in his seventies?

My DH wants to buy a couple of hoodies. Now his sons don't wear them anymore two in their forties youngest mid twenties. DH is 76 I'm trying to talk him out of it. Am I out of touch?

Yanbu

Yes you're out of touch. He'll look ace in a hoodie - why wouldn't he? - and they're really warm and practical too.

The key to staying young - in mind, at least - is to embrace change, move with the times and appropriately modernise with them, rather than stay stuck as the same person you were when you were young. This counts for clothes as well as ideas. Why would there be an age limit on a jumper?

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 20/08/2026 14:25

Why on earth would it matter if he wants to wear hoodies?

saraclara · 20/08/2026 14:27

What's wrong with a hoodie? Jeeze, if you can't wear what you like and are comfortable in, in your 70s (I've recently hit mine) when can you?

girljulian · 20/08/2026 14:27

Why on earth not? Obviously they're not formal attire but for a comfortable and practical option, can't beat a hoodie.

RightOnTheEdge · 20/08/2026 14:28

YABVU and old fashioned.
Let the man wear what he wants!

justasking111 · 20/08/2026 14:30

Old fashioned nope. Not for myself anyway. I think I should have asked my sons rather than Mumsnet. Never mind.

Must be paired with reflective sunglasses to be carried off with aplomb. 😎

toiletpaperthief · 20/08/2026 14:32

I would understand you if the question was "my husband wants to attend a wedding in a hoodie", otherwise... what's wrong with a hoodie? 🤔 they're super comfy and great for British humid weather when you happen to be out running errands and get the odd rain drops, now you can cover your head 😀

We don't want to turn the OP's husband into a chav, that's too much for the OP 🤣

JumpBoyJump · 20/08/2026 14:34

I would be disappointed if my DH STOPPED wearing hoodies in his 70’s, it wouldn’t be him if he didn’t ear them! Or should he switch to beige trousers and shirts?

I love how MN hasn’t agreed with you so you’ll ask your sons! Who you think are too old for hoodies?? You know alot of the billionaires wear hoodies. Surf hoodies etc, it’s not what you think

VioletSeagull · 20/08/2026 14:34

Hoodies are fine for all age groups. Absolutely nothing wrong with someone in his 70s wearing them.

Mycatisreal · 20/08/2026 14:35

In his seventies he’s earned the right to wear what he wants.

Because you didnt get the answer you wanted?! I feel bad for your husband

Ihatemondays1962 · 20/08/2026 14:37

Its up to your husband what he wears but there is nothing wrong with hoodies.

Catsandbooksaremybag · 20/08/2026 14:37

As a 56yo woman, I love hoodies as they're warm and cosy. There's no age limit to them. If he wants a hoodie, then he can buy one, it's entirely up to him what he wears.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/08/2026 14:37

@justasking111 - I’m sorry but you are being very unreasonable. There is no reason why a man of your husband’s age shouldn’t wear a hoodie.

Why do you feel you have the right to control what your husband wears?

SocksAndTheCity · 20/08/2026 14:38

Could you maybe be a bit clearer about what you're asking, OP? How does age relate to what somebody 'should' or 'shouldn't' wear, all other things (weather, occasion, fit etc) presumably being equal?

I'm 53 and my mum is 80 - what 'shouldn't' we wear?

YABVU

What makes you think that you should talk him out of wearing what he wants to wear. Hoodies are really comfortable, and at 76 he probably wouldn’t mind a bit of comfort as he starts to get older and more worn down.

I wouldn’t stand for someone telling me how to dress, would you?

As long as he sticks to the appropriate dress for the occasions (suit at black tie event etc) then there is no problem in him wearing a hoody. Also FWIW my 42 year old husband doesn’t appear to be planning on ditching the hoodies any time soon, and they suit him so why should he.

Quick Google search shows plenty of older men rocking their hoodies (including the one below)

I love my hoodies and I'm in my 60s.
I'm clearly not old-fashioned as my kids wear them and plenty of people down the gym much younger than me and sometimes older than me.

Hopefully you're not making him wear slacks and a pullover 😂

sunflowersintheday · 20/08/2026 14:40

Yes, you're out of touch. Plenty of people in their 70s wear them, and...(this is going to freak you out) ... people even older!

justasking111 · 20/08/2026 14:40

Okay I'll tell him to get the hoodies to match his balloon pants which he struggles to keep up. Luckily he wears underwear 🤣.

On the other hand he'd go mad if I wore a low cut dress or anything above the knee at my age. The double standards are alive and well.

Eh? You’re conflating two totally separate things. How is a practical, cosy sweatshirt comparable to a going out outfit?

I’m 68 and love a hoodie as does my 71 year old DH.

BTW I may also be seen showing a bit of cleavage and my knees on occasion. Wear what you want.

BillieWiper · 20/08/2026 14:45

Sounds a bit like you're blaming us for saying he can wear what he likes because he's a sexist old fart who tries to dictate your wardrobe?

You should both wear whatever you like.

You short skirts and low cut tops, him hoodies. (Or whatever you both fancy wearing) Without people throwing insults or trying to control each other's sartorial choices.

notacooldad · 20/08/2026 14:45

Both my mum.and dad wesr jeans and a hoodie. Mum is 84 and dad is 83.
Clearly they dont look like teens but look like pensioners who are comfortable.

You can wear a hoodie as well if you want. There's no double standard.
