Mother of the Groom dress dilema

I was on here previously asking about a dress. I need a dress for next June and want to get it now, firstly so there is less chance of anyone else having it and also to spread costs. Is it mother of the groom though? I don't want a stuffy dress but I do want to look as if I have made an effort.

Who said elegant was a dress code? Elegant is not that dress. I am also allowed an opinion. For what it's worth the snootyfrox dresses are mostly elegant. Not like the red dress.

Honestly you can wear a long dress to your sons wedding, i don't know where some people's ideas come from, im sure if you had posted a "traditional " MOG dress then posters would have said it was frumpy or old fashioned.

Sorry, I don't mean to derail the thread, but that Stacees website is quite funny because a lot of the models used for the MOB dresses don't look the right age to have a child who could actually be getting married. But I guess they want to use young models to sell the dresses...

As a potential mother of the groom myself I wouldn’t wear it. It’s nice enough but it would go on my no pile. It’s very fussy, too long and not right for the occasion, for me personally. I think something more chic and unfussy would be better.

I was a MOG this year and bought a bridesmaid dress in the same colour as my son's suit (which was an actual colour!). Bridesmaids weren't traditional bridesmaids and weren't in colours so it worked with the style of the wedding. I sent a picture to bride and groom for approval first. I think the solid colour dress just looked so much better for MOG and I don't think the style screamed bridesmaid. It was just a lovely chiffon dress, with an asymmetric hem.

I am not sure of your age, but I am young and a size 10, so traditional MOG dress would be too 'old' for me.

You're missing the point. The poster I quoted declared the OP's dress isn't a Mother of the Groom dress. Mother of the Groom is not a dress code. It's up to individual women to choose their dress.

For what it's worth I think the Snooty Fox dresses are awful.

Well you missed the point. I didn't say elegant was a dress code. I said "Mother of the Groom" isn't a dress code so I don't see how you can declare the OP's choice doesn't look like a Mother of the Groom dress.

It might be worth trying one of these, I am an hourglass pear and wore this in a different colour as MOB. Very comfortable and at least midi in length.

Neither MOG nor MOB should look 'stunning' that is the bride's perogative!
The mothers should be able to fade into the background, whilst wearing something that suits them.

If you're hoping to loose weight as you mentioned, I definitely wouldn't buy now as you might then end up with alteration costs and your shape may change in unexpected ways. But if you want to spread the cost, you could put the max budget you want to spend away in a separate account nos, or premium bonds or whatever, so that you don't have to budget for it next year?

This dress is V neck, with sleeves, midi length, well under budget and all one colour. There are lots of different colours to choose from if you don’t like this one.

Whatever are they thinking- there are several blue dress in those selections and we all know that if a MotG wears blue the wedding guests stone her to death for stealing the (complete made up bullshit) perogative of the bride to use her own mother as a garter for the day.

What about this sort of style (if you can find it in the right colour)? I always think for a wedding you want something that you like but alo that is no effort to wear for hours and hours (because you will be!). So a bit of shoulder coverage in case of sun, no difficult straps that are going to dig in or move around etc. You want to feel relaxed and comfortable and not have to think about your clothes. Plus it's easier to look more relaxed in the photos.

Where I am (north of UK) a red dress signified that you had slept with the groommh So obviously inappropriate for MOG. But perhaps that was just put about because red draws the eye in photos.
