Mother of the Groom dress dilema

flowersandmusic · 10/08/2026 21:50

I was on here previously asking about a dress. I need a dress for next June and want to get it now, firstly so there is less chance of anyone else having it and also to spread costs. I have found this one. https://raishma.co.uk/products/estella-dress?currency=GBP&country=GB&variant=55411753746808&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=a85857762863&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=23714931497&tw_kwdid=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23715027827&gbraid=0AAAAADbSZ1Be8hZNwmp_4zTZLlrlbtj2T&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7eXTBhDBARIsAKF-w45vJ5gQwJL3KZZ-ep8q8G9Uk2BK3Z0pc-fAEmDTYeiqDkGvMGZ1IBcaAgavEALw_wcB It is a dark cerise colour with orange through it even though it looks red in the picture and it looks good on. Is it mother of the groom though? I don't want a stuffy dress but I do want to look as if I have made an effort.

Estella Dress

A statement printed maxi dress in crinkle chiffon with soft feminine design. Great for brunch, occasions and romantic moments.

It’s a beautiful dress, but would you wear a maxi as the mother of the groom? Personally I wouldn’t - but what is the event like?

kdramaqueen · 10/08/2026 22:10

I think by next June this dress will look fussy and dated because of the many frills plus floral fabric.

A maxi's fine for mog

Sulgari · 10/08/2026 22:11

I agree that the usual mother of the groom stuff is dire, but that’s too casual in my opinion.

give us your size, colours, type of wedding, and budget?

Netaporter · Yesterday 04:00

@flowersandmusic I might well be very out of date but in my day, the MOB chose her colour and let the MOG know so that they didn’t clash. I certainly remember my MIL checking what colour my mother was wearing before committing to a dress herself. Customs might well have changed now but it might be worth checking that the MOB isn’t planning on wearing red before you commit?

I think that dress would be fine with some lovely accessories - it’s better to wear something you love and feel good in.

Applepieandcustard555 · Yesterday 04:35

It's a nice dress, but tbh I think the colour is too 'loud' for MOG.
I imagine it would probably clash with a number of colour themes the bride and groom might want to have for their wedding, and whilst it's nice to stand out as MOG, I think this colour would stand out too much in photos.

Kepler22B · Yesterday 07:37

I think it is a gorgeous dress and if you feel comfortable in it and it looks go then sounds perfect.

Who comes up with these ridiculous rules, the MOB gets first dibs on a colours? The MOG should blend into the background - not too frumpy but not too bright. No idea why a maxi dress wouldn’t be suitable.

As for it will be dated in less than a year - fashions don’t change that quickly. If you like it OP then go for it.

Screamingabdabz · Yesterday 07:45

It is quite a block of bold colour for a June wedding. I’d ask your DIL. It might clash horribly if she’s thinking pastel tones for the bridesmaids etc.

Alittlefrustrated · Yesterday 08:10

Far too loud and fussy. You'd regret this in the photos. Sorry.

Whynottryagain · Yesterday 08:51

I think it's a lovely dress.

Tbh I didn't care at all what my mother or MIL wore, as long as they liked it and it was suitable for a church ceremony (ie not a bikini!). Do your son and his fiancee feel the same?

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 09:12

It’s a gorgeous dress but I do agree that unless you know all the planned details, it is possible that this won’t fit the vibe. I’ve known a lot of brides change quite significant things about their wedding much nearer the time.

As for spreading the cost, what about putting the purchase money aside in a savings account, then you’ll get a bit of interest as well…

PhaedraTwo · Yesterday 09:23

Did you send back all the dresses you ordered on your previous thread?

I'm not sure what you're looking for on this thread. You'll get the same responses here as you did on there.

I don't like the dress, but I didn't like any of your other choices, but aside from that I don't think there's any reason not to wear it and I agree with Kepler22B

For myself I wouldn't buy a dress so far in advance as I'd be bound to see something I liked better.

eatreadsleeprepeat · Yesterday 10:46

I agree with pp about not buying yet. If you want to spread costs then put some money aside each month as a pot for when you see something.
I am not a fan of very mob outfits, they are stiff and generally manmade fibres and not good if we have a heatwave.
Stop looking and just try a few months of seeing what colours you like, just what makes you stop and think ‘that is very me’.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · Yesterday 11:59

Have you checked with your son whether there’s a preferred colour scheme? Or a colour reserved for the MOH (or bridesmaids, if they’re having multiple people)?

Italiangreyhound · Yesterday 13:32

Beautiful dress.

Pearlstillsinging · Yesterday 14:05

It's not really a MOG dress, is it? Why would you want to wear a maxi dress? Don't you have any stylish friends/relatives who can go shopping in person with you to work out what suits you? You don't need to buy yet but at least you would have an idea of what colours/style suits you.

NancyJoan · Yesterday 14:14

It's lovely, OP. If it makes you smile when you look in the mirror, it's the one for you.

NancyJoan · Yesterday 14:15

Why would you want to wear a maxi dress?
Why on Earth wouldn't you?

I am trying to work out why I agree it’s not quite right as a maxi.

I am not advocating for traditional MOB/ MOG looks. However the OP will be in the central wedding party and lots of pictures. I am thinking the issue is that Bride and her bridesmaids will probably be in full length dresses. This is why I think it is a jarring image. She will look like a bridesmaid and her dress may well clash with any vivid colour they are wearing.

I think maxi dresses have had their day anyway and only worked as a casual or formal wear look. There is something American about wearing a full length dress to a wedding anyway.

From a wear what you want aspect, my opinion would be the maxi style is outdated and the frilled tiers don’t work for me. Maybe if I was tall and willowy this look would be more my thing.

One "rule" I've heard is that MOB wears pink and MOG blue. Seems ridiculous-I'd never have dreamed of telling anyone what they could wear at my wedding! If they wanted to ask bridesmaid colour because they wanted to be different, fine, but it's not up to me to dictate what adults wear. I even asked my bridesmaids what they thought and would never have wanted them in something they felt uncomfortable in.
OP, I know some people don't like the idea of red at weddings, but that's their issue. What matters is you feel comfortable. If you want, ask the bride/groom, as really no one else's opinion matters, but you'll probably find they just want you to feel happy and don't want to dictate choices.

Neuronimo · Yesterday 16:32

It's really lovely OP, it looks cerise on my screen. I guess it depends on the vibe of the wedding. Is it very formal or a bit more laid back?

pastadish · Yesterday 16:58

It looks more like a wedding guest dress than mog.
But I would wear whatever the bride/groom asked me to but if it was my choice I would go with something less bohemian and frilly looking.

But surely a "mother of the groom dress is a dress worn by the woman who is the mother of the groom. What is a mother of the groom meant to look like?

I would if asked wear a particular style of dress from a broad category or wouldn't wear a particular colour, if asked, but beyond that, no I would not be told what to wear by the bride and groom.

susiedaisy1912 · Yesterday 17:26

I think it’s gorgeous and the frills won’t be out of fashion by next summer in my opinion. You’re either a frills girl or you’re not. I love frills and embroidery in my wardrobe. I’m 55 and sat here with a ra ra skirt on. 🤣

SirChenjins · Yesterday 17:32

Wear what you like! The only people you should check with is the bride and groom, and given it's not a white dress with a tulle headdress I can't imagine they will have any problem with it.

emilysquest · Yesterday 17:36

I like the dress but I think the colour is too attention-attracting for the photos.
