Mother of the Groom dress dilema

flowersandmusic · 10/08/2026 21:50

I was on here previously asking about a dress. I need a dress for next June and want to get it now, firstly so there is less chance of anyone else having it and also to spread costs. I have found this one. https://raishma.co.uk/products/estella-dress?currency=GBP&country=GB&variant=55411753746808&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=a85857762863&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=23714931497&tw_kwdid=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23715027827&gbraid=0AAAAADbSZ1Be8hZNwmp_4zTZLlrlbtj2T&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7eXTBhDBARIsAKF-w45vJ5gQwJL3KZZ-ep8q8G9Uk2BK3Z0pc-fAEmDTYeiqDkGvMGZ1IBcaAgavEALw_wcB It is a dark cerise colour with orange through it even though it looks red in the picture and it looks good on. Is it mother of the groom though? I don't want a stuffy dress but I do want to look as if I have made an effort.

Estella Dress

A statement printed maxi dress in crinkle chiffon with soft feminine design. Great for brunch, occasions and romantic moments.

It looks more like a wedding guest dress than mog

But surely a "mother of the groom dress is a dress worn by the woman who is the mother of the groom. What is a mother of the groom meant to look like?

I would if asked wear a particular style of dress from a broad category or wouldn't wear a particular colour, if asked, but beyond that, no I would not be told what to wear by the bride and groom.

The same way women on here are told it’s too casual, it’s too revealing, it’s not suitable etc about potential dresses they may wear to a wedding. Some people might say any dress worn by a guest is a wedding guest dress so anything goes. But in reality that’s not the case is it.
My opinion is that the dress is too casual, too long and too frilly for the mother of the groom. If she wants to wear it I don’t care I won’t be at the wedding and I’m not the bride

Ophy83 · Yesterday 18:38

I like the dress. If red is your colour go for it

Nannydoodles · Yesterday 19:00

i think the dress is nice but too bold a colour for a June wedding, personally I think it’s too early to buy for next June, just put some money away each month.
i think you will find something nicer by then.

One "rule" I've heard is that MOB wears pink and MOG blue. Seems ridiculous-I'd never have dreamed of telling anyone what they could wear at my wedding! If they wanted to ask bridesmaid colour because they wanted to be different, fine, but it's not up to me to dictate what adults wear. I even asked my bridesmaids what they thought and would never have wanted them in something they felt uncomfortable in.
OP, I know some people don't like the idea of red at weddings, but that's their issue. What matters is you feel comfortable. If you want, ask the bride/groom, as really no one else's opinion matters, but you'll probably find they just want you to feel happy and don't want to dictate choices.

No the trend in the uk is to have MOB as your something blue - as in wearing a blue outfit. MOG is a social outcast if she tries to buy or wear blue. I work in this industry.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 19:23

If you like it then go for it! It’s bizarre that people try to make up crazy “rules” or even saying it will not work next year purely because it’s next year (most of us do not change our wardrobes every year!). Two things matter, do you like it and does it fit well

Ikeameatballs · Yesterday 20:55

It’s fine.

flowersandmusic · Yesterday 21:04

I must have bought 20 dresses by now and sent them back. I am second guessing everything. Ok, maybe I will wait until nearer the time. Can anyone give me inspiration. If not a maxi I would prefer a longer line dress. Big boobs so preferably a v-neck. Don't really want to spend £500 but would for the right dress. Accessories I can always pick up. So, 5' 8" size 14 but hopefully a 12 by then. I prefer maybe pinks and greens than blue but open to suggestions. It's a small casual wedding - no bridesmaids. Mainly the ceremony and lunch. I will try and find out what the MOB is going to wear but I have a feeling so will go all out.

Is this too fussy also?

I think you should take a deep breath and leave it until nearer the time.

And step away from the flouncy floral maxis

Mamafromthebeach · Yesterday 21:56

It’s a lovely dress - wear what you feel comfortable in.

I would be hesitant to buy so far in advance though unless you are absolutely certain it is the one you must have. I like the idea of saving the funds in a separate account so you can buy something closer to the time.

I have never heard so many wedding rules before colour/style/maxi the only thing I would avoid is a colour match with the bridesmaids and to check with MOB that you aren’t wearing the same outfit.

How ridiculous

I'm very glad no-one in my family is 'trendy' then as this is just ludicrous.

I'm of an age where me, my sister, my SiL, and several of my friends have been either MoB or MoG this year and/or in the last couple of years and I've never come across this and hope I never do. It would be very much mocked if it were suggested to most people I know.

Nannydoodles · Yesterday 22:20

Obviously you should wear what you like and are comfortable in, it doesn’t really matter what we all think.
However, I would steer away from a maxi if it’s a small, casual daytime wedding and go for a midi length not so flouncy dress.

JudgeJ · Yesterday 22:33

pastadish · Yesterday 16:58

It looks more like a wedding guest dress than mog.
But I would wear whatever the bride/groom asked me to but if it was my choice I would go with something less bohemian and frilly looking.

Nothing to do with the bride and groom what their guests wear including their mothers as long as it's clean and not outrageous, if they want an opinion they should be paying.

Advocodo · Yesterday 22:38

I wouldn’t buy yet. I think the fact that you are asking mumsnet what we think is a red flag. Keep looking and you will find something that is just you. Also think this dress might clash with bridesmaid colours. It’s very bright and ‘out there’.

flowersandmusic · Yesterday 22:49

Ok, the dress is packed up to go back. Thanks for all the feedback. I do think it is probably a bit fussy for a small daytime wedding. This is the one I bought originally and most people liked it but some people thought it was too casual. It is a small intimate wedding with no bridesmaids https://www.debenhams.com/product/jolie-moi-angel-sleeve-tiered-hem-maxi-dress_p-3e6c2c44-815f-42c7-b1db-67eae670cce8?colour=Multi&size=10&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22915808283&gbraid=0AAAAABevdS7lom0v68CypUOUtJ7wI713e&gclid=Cj0KCQjwio_RBhDMARIsAJPveNPX9QJHogyDX5JR4S_T4TALqJat6EcPACrQj2f_XntgPAeZTx04zrkaAnTFEALw_wcB&sv_campaign_id=78888&sv_tax1=affiliate&sv_tax2=&sv_tax3=Skimlinks&sv_tax4=mumsnet.com&sv_affiliate_id=78888&awc=22735_1786484863_ea0d3e3718e78e00c7ddc31bb3db30b4&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=awin&utm_campaign=UK_78888&utm_content=Sub+Networks

My ds got married recently. I got huge admiration for my dress. The brides mother was the same. They were both plain colored.iMy top tip and please listen is wear a plain coloured dress. No flowers. They look much nicer in the photos and are far more stylish. All those dresses are too fussy. Something that doesn't date by the next month as you will have those photos forever. And l would say not a maxi as its too much material for one person in the picture.

Thank you for your advice. I hadn't really thought as far as photos. I'm assuming I could still pick a cerise colour as I would prefer something bright but all one colour?

Well if you are hoping to be a size smaller by the wedding it's ridiculous to buy a dress that fits you now!

This is absolute nonsense. MOG and MOB can both wear whatever colours they like without this social outcast ridiculousness. It’s a celebration of a marriage, not a bloody film set.

Also, this is my favourite dress of the season.

Everything dates eventually. And bride's and bridesmaids' dresses particularly so.

None of the OP's many choices are going to date in a year, far less a month.
