Can someone explain the appeal of expensive Hermès bags to me

I don’t know how, but I recently got sucked into watching a bunch of Love Luxury videos on YouTube which features rich people buying expensive Hermes bags. Can someone please explain the obsession with Hermes bags? To me, they look very basic or just plain ugly. I cannot fathom why someone would pay £20,000-200k on a bag which costs a fraction of that price to produce and was mostly made in China. I’d rather get a good quality bag which has been handcrafted locally for £200 or less. Someone please explain it to me?!

You have experts in leather and handbags who had evaluated Hermes bags and estimated that the average cost of making a Hermes bag sits between $800-$1,400. This is just 15% of what they retail for, which is a huge mark up. So even the ethical argument aside, the materials and craftsmanship (and I’m not arguing with they are decently made bags) still is nowhere near the price point. So just looking at it from a materials and craftsmanship point of view, it’s not worth it.

Then you have the ethical side of the business and I would definitely argue that using exotics is outdated and dangerous actually. We’ve just come out of a global pandemic that was caused by pathogens from animals. We know that reptiles carry different pathogens to humans, so even putting the animal welfare argument aside, it’s irresponsible at best. Especially because we know that reptile farms are a breeding ground for disease.

So, logistically, the bags, objectively speaking, aren’t worth it and the company is unethical. Now I have absolutely no doubt that people will continue to buy the bags because I also don’t assume that people care about many things and, certainly, they seem drawn to status symbols. What’s the saying? Money brings out the worst in people.

This Thread has had mixed responses and I think many of the arguments have been really tenuous. I mean, comparing Nestle to Hermes, really? If you want to buy from Hermes, knock yourself out.

This is completely unremarkable though. All fashion brands have a retail mark up of between 100-1000%. That’s between 100-300% for mass market, 300-600% for mid range and 600-1000% for luxury.

Jewellery, of any kind, has a mark up of on up to 5000% (and do we want to get into the ethics of gold and diamond mining? Probably best not to now). Cosmetics and perfume up to 9000%. Bottled water up to 9000% … hello, environmental plastics debate.

There’s little value or sense in pitting one set of ethics against another. If I want to buy Hermes, I will knock myself out. If you want to lobby against exotic leathers, also knock yourself out.

I am. And nobody has convinced me they are worth it. Quite the opposite actually. And I’ve learnt a lot. Like how they’ve also used elephant skins to make bags and there’s a current law suit against them for how they treat customers. So thanks to all the people who contributed!

I agree. I love handbags and have many, including designer bags. But, I've never been interested in the Birkin. It seems heavy and impractical to me, and it looks like a grandma bag.

I do like their Constance bag, though. Not enough to buy it, but it's nice.

That’s great. It’s great to learn new things. I don’t think anyone was trying to convince you they were worth it. They were describing why they thought they were worth it. And that’s how worth works.

Yes, but I’m not your average person from my country and please don’t assume what my community knows and doesn’t know. You’re embarrassing yourself now.

I'm not embarrassing myself at all. I've worked extensively in public health in low-income countries so I'm well aware of the reach of Nestle and the devastating impact it has had.

Are you still banging on about Nestle? Give it a rest. Everyone else has moved on. If you work in PH you’ll know that not everyone has access to that knowledge. If you don’t than that’s concerning and perhaps you should spend more time talking to your colleagues that work directly with deprived communities, like social workers.

There are no 'social workers' in the countries that I work with directly. Many people live in extreme, absolute poverty.

Okay, and this is a Thread about Hermes. I suggest you follow your own advice and post a separate Thread about Nestle if that’s what you want to talk about as it has no relevance to this conversation.

Oh FFS what a lot of childish comments and arguments on here! All over a Hermès bag - I find this ridiculous, sorry. Not the usual kind of thread on this board, I gave up after 4 pages.

Ha! Fair point. Actually that was another commenter who, after I pointed out unethical practices from Hermes, compared Hermes to Nestle (who produces kitkats). The conversation quickly spiralled.

I wasn't the poster that mentioned Nestle in the first place so that comment is probably best directed to them.

The OP was directed to the Purse Forum early on - a far better place to have this type of discussion.

Yes but you’re the one that keeps bringing it up. And you’re bringing it up on its own and not even making an attempt to make a tenuous link to Hermes. It’s got no place here.

Well, I think you struggled to answer on the points of comparison. Many different consumer items were offered as points of comparison on ethical practices in a range of price brackets – KitKats were only one of them. You latched onto Nestle and KitKats, ignoring the others, so of course people were going to reply about it. Because that’s how discussions evolve.
